“I don’t know what I’m even doing anymore!” Elara drew out a lengthened sigh of irritation as she booted at a tiny pebble just beneath her with her right foot, watching it as it fluently vanished into the forest. Those prolonged feline ears of hers jerked at the sound of the rock making impact with arbitrary leaves and branches. “How many weeks have even passed? Two? Three? I lost count.” Awkwardly she resumed to talk amongst herself as her legs extended outwards to stride along the rock-strewn trail, her hands swinging against their respective sides with each step she took. Three weeks zoomed by, yet at the same time they sluggishly rolled onto the oncoming days. Disbelief still rattled within her core as she questioned if this was indeed her new reality or naught but a dreadful nightmare.
Arcane Nexus, the worlds most popular virtual reality game, made headway five years ago. As expected, everyone wanted to participate in this newfound realm and experience the hype for themselves. Elara was one of those individuals, itching to delve into this gateway to escape from her real life, even if it was only for a few hours. It was love at first ‘dive’ as she made a name for herself in this different timeline. Her avatar was excessively sexualized, she hated to confess, but it didn’t make a difference since it was all pretend, right? She manipulated an assortment of spells from her palms whilst wielding her loyal katana. It was a goal of hers to be well versed for any situation that would be hurled her way. In her second life, confidence pulsated in her veins, unlike her true self who was timid and coy.
Devotedly she played nearly every day, fueling her addiction to escape and become someone else. Even though five years promptly came and went since the games unveil, it still held the title of being number one. No matter what it may be, everything had an end, and Arcane Nexus was no exception. Legal disputes fired away at the company for unspecified reasons. Of course, there were speculations and rumors traveling around as to what was going on, but no one was prepared for the news of its abrupt termination. Elara grew severely upset and understandably depressed, realizing that her one true escape would ironically escape from her.
They were thoughtful enough to announce the final day that the servers would be online and after the news reached to her, she’d skip college that day and savor the last few moments. She played all day, mostly to bathe in the sights and ambience of her second home. She wanted this world to be branded into her brain, but there was a reason as to why people would say “be careful for what you wish for.”
You bet your ass that Elara wanted to stay inside as long as she could, making it her target to remain in game until the serves ceased their existence and forced her offline. Repetitively she glanced at her in-game clock, dreading each new digit that allowed time to move forward. She’d lay her back against the grasslands while extending her arms outwards, gazing into the blackened sky that deemed itself night. Her time was running out and there was nothing she could do about it. One more minute remained, Elara closing her eyes gingerly as she concentrated on her steady breathing and the light caresses of wind grazing against her bare skin. She lost track of time but realized more than a minute had passed.
Hurriedly she opened her eyes, the same scenery still displaying itself to her as she dumbfoundedly lifted from her laying position. Without warning, the brightest white consumed her vision. In-game brightness would have no effect on the players eyes, but this one was so deafening that her eyes ached for the first time. She was forced to shield herself from the invading illumination, but as fast as it consumed her it dissipated.
Cautiously she fluttered her eyes open to see that she was still in her location. Confusion turned into fear, knowing that this had to be a glitch in the system. She should’ve been booted by now! Swiping upwards with her right index and middle finger she’d pull up her menu. The logout option on the bottom-left corner was no longer in sight, an instantaneous feeling of dismay beginning to drown her as she anxiously searched for the absent feature. What came next truly startled her… she could smell the scents surrounding her, as well as experiencing a full sense of feeling and touch. The game only permitted very minimal touching sensation that only felt like a small shove and nothing more regarding other special senses, but this was full-blown real-life shit right now.
In this moment she understood that she was trapped in here. Indefinitely as far as she knew.
Once the spell ceased, she lifted her head, expecting to see the road ahead, but in its place was a looming forest-like fiend confronting her. Moss, bark, and roots consumed this soulless elite, yet its maw bared sharpened fangs that unmistakably would be lethal if caught in between them. Gulping down the lump in her throat she began to tremble. Sure, she wrestled these before by herself, but during the course of these three weeks she discovered it was best to avoid them. They were not like the original content at all despite having the same appearance.
“Shit…” silently she mouthed out as they continued to stare at each other. A simple twitch of her tail erupted the chaos within this beast as it leaned back to spew out its threatening battle cry. The merciless creature didn’t even allow her a chance to react to his oncoming blows as it lifted its balled-up left hand mightily in the air, slamming it down like a hammer trying to force a nail to push deeper. May it be by a deity’s grace that Elara was able to tumble out of the way just in time, feeling the earth underneath her tremble from its vigorous blow.
It wouldn’t take much longer until it was prepared to fire down another assault in her direction. She had to think quicker, but it left her no time to react. She couldn’t even grasp onto her katana or muster a three-second-long spell to aid her. All she could do was hope for the best and pray that her feline reflexes would partner on her side to see another day.

Tucked away far into the distance, something obscured the pathway ahead, unknowing as to what it was since it appeared to be nothing more than a muddled image for now. Clasping her hands together she would bow her head, whispering incoherent words as a small squall encircled around Elara. Her painted snowy tresses messily whirled about as she teleported ahead of her. She estimated a specific distance that would be close enough to get a clearer glimpse of what was ahead while remaining safely away.
