When Patrick Carpenter first heard of his new assignment, the spy was almost relieved. After spending the last month sleeping in muddy ditches and eating trail rations posing as a bandit, he yearned for a chance to serve his ruler, the Baron of Morngard, in a more refined setting. So as he received orders to infiltrate the court of the Countess of Ardenvast, he accepted without question. A less experienced agent may have questioned why the Baron would send spies into his neighbor's lands, despite them both belonging to the same kingdom, but Patrick was familiar enough with how his lord worked to ask such foolish questions. It was a pretty standard tactic of Morngard's ruler: integrate agents into a rival's court, look for a reason to convince the king the local ruler was unfit to rule, and swoop in to establish a puppet to bend his way.
It wasn't hard to see why the Baron desired control of Ardenvast. The heavily forested land was dotted with ruins, making it a treasure trove for spell components and magical artifacts, something the countess was rumored to take full advantage of. Even with his power and his puppets, a ruler with nigh unlimited access to arcane resources was a threat that needed to be dealt with. And so, when word got out that Countess Harper Lockwood was in need of more servants, Patrick was shipped off to the neighboring region to begin work in her sizable castle, ready to find or create evidence that would lead to her downfall.
After several weeks of work however, he found his task would be harder than he first hoped. The countess was secretive, rarely showing herself, always working somewhere in the bowels of the castle. Even if she managed to leave out a journal or some parchment, he was never alone long enough to get a better look. Despite the size of the estate, his "master" insisted that the help worked in pairs to be more efficient. And so, he waited, playing the loyal servant, cleaning and readying rooms for the countess's use, doing his best to always appear cheerful and eager to help. He knew that those servants with the countess's blessing could be allowed to roam free without a partner, and if he was going to make any progress, he'd have to play the system.
Which is why when Patrick received a late night summons to the castle depths, he didn't hesitate. Making sure his black vest was straight, his white shite was spotless, and his black pants were without wrinkles, he followed the directions printed to a part of the castle he'd never seen before. Where those stairs always there, descending into a featureless hallway with a single wooden door? He'd served throughout the castle, making it a point to map the layout in his mind. Surely he'd know of such a feature, right? And so it was with some unease that he knocked on the door, clasped his hands behind his back, and waited for permission to enter.
