How do I know if someone left the conversation/pm?

If they've set it to "accept future replies" when they leave it, you won't know if they've left the conversation. The only way to tell is if they set it to "ignore futher replies", at which point their username will be crossed out and the ability to reply will be gone.

You open a user profile and click start conversation.

Users cannot send PMs until their account reaches 'blue' status - aka 3 posts on the forums/24 hour wait after registering.
