(plot by Acitar, all characters are over the age of 18)
The year was 2090 and civilization was going through a period of unrest. Advancements in automation and AI over the last century had destabilized the global markets. In addition, the global population had swelled to some thirty billion most of which lived in abject poverty. As the population skyrocketed so did the bureaucracy of centralized authority to the point that ministers had little idea of what was going on in their own departments beyond the conflicting reports that hourly landed on their desks. The situation was so bad that the idea of Eugenics was beginning to find new favor as a means of population control. The question of what should be done about the surplus population filled entire segments of net news broadcasts. Even as corporate miming settlements began to spread out across the oceans floor news broadcasts uncovered the latest shocking and clandestine forced sterilization programs. The situation was so bad that religious factions grew quite on the question of homosexuality even as it was promoted in schools.
With the advent of the first hyperdrives there became a global initiative to fling the less desirable portions of humanity out into the stars. It was strictly a humanitarian effort; corporations had no interest in an endeavor that might take a hundred years to see a return on investment. Those first missions were horrible trials by fire with colonists literally inventing the technology as they went. Humanity learned its lessons from those first missions and the technology got better with later missions and so did the quality of prospective colonists. No longer was it a do or die prospect for the fatally optimistic. Barring some highly sought-after talent the colonists were exclusively young and sexually viable. It didn’t make a lot of economic sense shooting old people and families across the vast expanse of the galaxy. No two colony ships were alike, each one was built and outfitted to the specifications and needs of its host country or group.
The Eden Project was a Mormon endeavor. It had a battery of nine hyperdrives powered by twin nuclear reactors allowing it to reach near relativistic speed. The central portion and main bulk of the ship was a ten-mile-long hydroponics cylinder fully four miles in circumference giving the colonists forty square miles of farming space. The nose of the ship was all crew space in a typical naval style. The selected crew was to be one hundred men and one hundred women between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five. There were only four older crew members, the captain, doctor, chief engineer, and a professor of botany. There was also the ships onboard AI that would monitor the ship on its voyage and assist the crew.
Salt Lake City Utah October 7, 2090 This was the day of a new beginning. After the application and all the prescreening process the day had finally arrived. Just one more turn your head and cough physical before boarding the shuttle to Eden. Inside an airplane hangar young Robin got his first real look at his fellow colonists. Naked they stood in four neat lines waiting their turn before the doctor. Just ahead of him in line was a woman about his age with the same sun kissed blond hair hanging straight down to the middle of her back. From the back she looked to have all the easy curves and wide hips that would no doubt make her popular with the male colonists and probably a few of the females as well. They were about the same height and he caught her glancing back over her shoulder a couple of times before she half turned to make an introduction. She seemed like she wanted to offer her hand, but she had one arm over her breasts and another covering her sex in an attempt at modesty. Instead she bumped elbows with him and giggled. At first impression she seemed like a chatter box speaking as though she was trying to get all her words out in a single breath.
“I’m Amanda, all my friends call me Mandy, you can call me Mandy. This is so exciting; I can’t wait to see the ship and where we’re going to live. Have you seen the pictures? None of the probes have come back yet of where we’re going but they have all these mockups in the brochures, it all looks so amazing. Just think by the time we get there it’ll be 2290. We’ll be the oldest people alive, isn’t that amazing, I think it’s amazing. I’m in botany. Where are you? I’m sure we’ll see each other loads over the next two weeks. Oh, we could be bunk mates! Won’t that be exciting? I can’t wait to meet everybody.”
Amanda or Mandy had fully turned around shuffling backwards as she chatted with Robin. Not fully paying attention she backed into the person ahead of her stopping her short. This caused Robin to stop short as to prevent walking into Mandy. The slow methodical movement of the line as the colonists whispered among themselves meant that the line bunched at that point. Robin felt a poke and slide against his back just below his ribs. Many was already turning around making her apologies to the person she had stumbled into and Robin could hear her starting up.
