Prologue
It was a cool dry spring morning at the Murena residence. Currently the large upper-middle class home was occupied only by the families two children, Joshua and Narcissa. Their parents were currently away attending a wedding of one of their close friends.
It was currently spring break and Joshua was home from college. Most young men his age would be down at the beach or at some block party celebrating their youth, but Josh wasn't quite as social as his college mates. Not to mention that the current state of the world kept him distanced from those he wasn't directly familiar with. Instead, Josh had been continuing a project he had been working on since his freshman year of school. He was currently working on a modification of his favorite video game. A project he was on a team with many other across the internet. Josh was majoring in game development and had been working on stuff like this since he before he was in high school and he became quite good at it.
His sister, Narcissa, wasn't in college yet. She had visited a few, but either she hadn't liked the school, or they didn't like her. Due to these unfortunate circumstances, she had been trapped at home. However, the pandemic gave her an excuse to brush up on some heavy reading. Narcissa was goth, but it was deeper than that. She had been spending most of her youth deep in occult lore. Of course, it was all bogus. Nothing she ever read about or attempted turned out to be real. Any time she felt like she was discovering something new, she found herself in a dead end.
Josh's project had kept him pretty busy for the past few days and he's mostly been locked up in his room. Though he came down for food on occasion, he and his sister didn't hadn't seen each other much since he came home. This wasn't an unusual relationship between them though. They've always kept to themselves for their own reasons. Their was no real ill will between them, if they weren't siblings, they may have even been friends if it wasn't for their anti-social personalities. Narcissa took advantage of their parents' absence and used their father's office for her own research. Her parents' put her in a small room after she graduated in an attempt to encourage her out of the house. Saying they hadn't been very fond of her since her goth "phase" began would have been a gross understatement. But their distancing themselves from her suited her just fine, as long as they stayed out of her way.
In Josh's room, which their parents kept pristine and ready for him, the young man had his own setup with multiple computers and monitors. One basic laptop from school and a gaming desktop he had been upgrading throughout the years. He was the golden child in the family with his success in high school and getting into a top university and he always got what he wanted. The project he was currently working on wasn't quite what his parents would have hoped. The mod he was making was meant to be an extremely immersive one, almost a breakthrough in both the modding community and in gaming itself. Combined with VR technology, it was meant to trick the mind into thinking everything was real, despite only working with audio and visual cues. However, his mod was also very sexual in nature, turning the video game world into a place which could fulfill any dark fetish. If his parent's knew about this part of him, he surely would not be the favored son he had always been.
Narcissa had recently come upon a strange find. The town they lived in was the most normie vanilla place in the entirety of the country. Getting hold of occult material was a real challenge. However, when she could catch the bus, in downtown there was an old fortune teller woman that she occasionally visited. Her last visit ended up in her obtaining a strange old tome. The old woman was probably the only person in town who actually enjoyed Narcissa's company and had given her this book as a present. The book turned out to be over a century old according to her online research. It was also in Latin, which she was currently attempting to translate.
After spending all night and all morning working on his project, Josh's computer crashed. A frustrating event losing him at least 4 or more hours of work if his project didn't properly autosave. Either way there was sure to be some corrupted data. After swearing to himself for a few minutes, he decided it was time for a break. He headed downstairs for some breakfast; cooking himself some eggs, toast, bacon and some hazelnut coffee the aroma swept through the house soon finding it's way to the office. The delicious mixed aroma assaulted Narcissa's nose, reminding her belly that she hadn't eaten since that meager meal the evening before.
