Question "Willing to double"

What does it mean? I tried asking a member who used to the term and they never answered me...

Generally refers to each participant playing two main characters in the same story. Sometimes this is so that you get one of your itches scratched while they scratch one of yours; if they have a pairing they really want to see and you have something else you really desire, and both can fit into the same story.

I've always been curious about meaning of double up. I also thought it meant they do same idea or pairing simultaneously since some players don't do that.
