WORLD INFORMATION & BACKSTORY
This will be periodically updated as the story progresses and evolves.
All the information here is IC knowledge and comprises what Adela has learned so far.

The calendar used in Yvonta as well as by many of the inhabitants of the continent of Eden originally came from overseas around the year 600 FT, originating from a nation called the Elthysian Empire on the continent of Alarr, which has subjugated much of the continent of Eden in its earlier days. With their subjugation, they brought their beliefs and customs, but also their calendar.

The calendar used by the Elthysian Empire is made up out of a single year consisting of 384 days, which are divided into six seasons each consisting of 64 days. The original year count of the Elthysian empire started when their fabled first king, Fionnvar the First, supposedly claimed his kingdom and founded the city of Tyraan, putting the current date at 1497 FT.
Suncrest (Spring) (March/April)
Brightsun (Summer) (May/June)
Stormfall (Monsoon) (July/August)
Harvestcall (Autumn) (September/October)
Silvertide (Pre-Winter) (November/December)
Snowfall (Winter) (January/February)
Mondas (Monday)
Dunudas (Tuesday)
Wendas (Wednesday)
Turdas (Thursday)
Fredas (Friday)
Sardas (Saturday)
Enerdas (Newday)
Sonodas (Sunday)

The way time is measured is that the number of selfsame days is measured within each month. So, the 24th day of pre-winter would be noted as the 3rd Sonodas of Silvertide, or the 51st day of summer would be noted as the 7th Wendas of Brightsun.

The people of the Khanate do not keep a close track of time, and count their years by winters and half-winters instead, referring to past events as 'more than a winter ago' or 'less than a half-winter ago'.

The people of Sal Adaris use a very peculiar way of keeping track of time. Instead of counting days or months, they track the migration patterns of a certain type of bird called the Crested Coua, which migrates at very specific times of the year across their lands, exactly four times a year. To the people of Sal Adaris these migrations signal the start of a new season, and once the birds have returned to their original resting place, a new year begins.
Yvonta is located on the eastern coast of the continent of Eden, one of the six major continents in this world (which are Alarr, Kohrin, Solyabrys, Qaerhune, Eden, and the Arctus). Adjacent to the kingdom of Yvonta is the kingdom of Gaohlas to the North, and the Umbral Dynasty to the South. The Khanate is located across the Khanate Mountains which separate Yvonta from the rolling plains of the Khanate.

A Map of Yvonta & Surroundings
Flag of Yvonta
The Aelderweald is a gigantic, ancient forest which spreads hundreds of miles in every direction. The forest is inhabited by many animals and tribes which have called the place home for as long as anyone can remember. Much of this forest remains unexplored, and its mysterious qualities have led to many tales and folklore.
The Kingdom of Gaohlas was once part of Yvonta, but a little more than half a millenia ago they rebelled against Yvontan rule, led by an outsider named Pyras Gaohl, who was rumoured to be of Elthysian lineage. This man then claimed a large part of northern Yvonta for himself, restructuring the land to look more like the Empire he hailed from. His descendants strengthened this newfound nation, and in turn started to invade Yvonta themselves, something which has lasted for the last couple of centuries.

- Gaohl
Gaohl is the capital of Gaohlas, founded by their first king. It is located near the Aelderweald and has grown rich due to the lumber gained from the nearby woods and the raids upon the lands of Yvonta. It is also the seat of their current king.

- Erynar
Erynar is a large trading town in the lands of Gaohlas through which much of the trade traffic in that country goes.

- Denthos
Denthos is a port city which is used as a stopover for any naval traffic travelling along the coast of eastern Eden, and is known for its large shipyard.
The Khanate are the lands under control by the many nomadic tribes that call the central plains of Eden their home. These tribes live a horse-based lifestyle and do not have any permanent cities located near Yvonta. The Khanate is controlled by the Khan, which rules all of the nomadic tribes, and the title is passed on in combat alone. The current Khan is supposedly called Ordhuk, but there is not much more known about the nomad people. They occasionally cross the mountains to raid the lands of Yvonta, but this does not happen often.
The tropical desert lands of Sal Adaris spread from the central part of the continent of Eden all the way down to its southern tip, and is home to a plethora of creatures. The regions are divided into city-states, with each city controlling their surrounding territory, but the cities are united together to form a front against any would-be attackers, and have a communal council that oversees rule and law of the whole nation.

- Sal Teron
Sal Teron is a large trading city along the Teron river, and controls the flow of trade and traffic that goes through the river as well. The Lord Mayor of the city is responsible for its surrounding lands, and has much autonomy within the lands of Sal Adaris as well.
The Umbral Dynasty is a kingdom located to the south of Yvonta and, much like Yvonta, has one main religion that is closely connected to the rule of the country, which is the religion of the god Umbra. Unlike Yvonta however, the Umbral Dynasty has a very strong military culture, and the king of their lands is also expected to be their best general. They have raided Yvonta many times over, and not long ago conquered part of Yvontan territory, which is known as the Teron Grasslands.

- Enethon
Enethon is the capital of the Umbral Dynasty, a large fortified city which has seen many sieges, but has never once been taken.

- Ornash
Ornash is a coastal city which is used as a stopover for any naval traffic travelling along the coast of eastern Eden.

- Ondrivar
Ondrivar is a large trading city which controls the mouth of the Teron river.

- Nirith
Nirith is a large city that collects the minerals and metals mined in the Umbral mountains by the several mining communities, and is known for its many forges that produce much of the country's weapons and armor.
There was once a time when the kingdom of Yvonta was considered weak. It was less than a century ago that the world knew Yvonta to be a place of gentle and giving people, but now they are a force to be reckoned with. Their fertile land and natural resources were the cause of a near millennia's worth of various violent invasions and short occupations, but as of recent the native people have begun to steel themselves, and the nation as a whole has slowly been built up into a kingdom that can rival its neighbours.

- Lyrah
Lyrah is the capital of Yvonta, located above the Gulf of Teron. Lyrah has for centuries been the seat of the kigns and queens of Yvonta and is where much of the wealth of Yvonta collects to be traded with ships that sail into the Gulf of Teron or sail from the Teron river. The city has many markets and is home to many people as well, but it has also seen its fair share of sieges back in the day.

- Amoa
Amoa is a large coastal town that houses a large shipyard and many fishermen as well as a large amount of farms on its outskirts. It is one of the main sources of the nation's food supply, but has also been a target of many of the raids that have plagued this country.

- Port Egress
Port Egress is a city that was originally founded by men of the Elthysian Empire from which they could easily load the resources of Yvonta onto their ships. After they left, Port Egress was transformed into a trading town from which the country trades with many of the nations across the seas.

- Alder
Alder is a large city in the north of Yvonta which supplies a lot of the timber that is chopped in the Aelderweald.

- Virhyl
Virhyl is a large town the is conveniently located between the HIgh Temple and Lyrah, and was once an important holy site that housed many of the priests before the High Temple was established.

- The High Temple
The High Temple is the seat of the clergy of the Goddess of Peace, and is the location from where all the priests and priestesses are taught before being sent out to other temples throughout the lands. The Temple is a large fortified bastion surrounded by a large town that has been attracted to the important temple, and is located in the Pariina Hills, near the river from which the hills get their name.

There are two types of magic: natural and learned. Natural magic was thought to be given by the gods and grants the ability to control and manipulate the world's most basic elements: earth, wind, fire, and water. Learned magic is man-made and has far more mysterious and yet unexplored borders. The natural magic is faith-based and was extremely common and accepted, known about thousands of years ago when the continent was first settled. Then as kingdoms began to pop up and belief in the gods dwindled, so did natural magic. Learned magic then started to be created, a way to still have power without involving the gods the people didn't believe in anymore. Both magics are being used now by very few people. People who practice natural magic are at the High Temple, scattered among the smaller temples, or living in the handful of villages that are still "true believers." Bending is like strengthening a muscle, you have to work it often and build up exercises to get better at it. Most benders are weak and the limited number of non-believers that have seen natural magic assume it's a low form of the other magic. Learned magic is used by even fewer people and they are all either associated with the High Temple or they work directly for/with various royal councils. It takes many years to master learned magic and because of how long it takes and how difficult it is, no one can just ‘pick it up’. Both magics are still around, but in a pretty non-obvious way that most common people don't really know anything or much about either.
There are multiple religions in the kingdom of Yvonta due to its history of invasion and trade, but none of those are officially recognized as such, as the main religion of the kingdom has a strong presence in the country and does not tolerate other religions. The main religion itself consists out of a pantheon of five gods, which all promote the peaceful culture that Yvonta has had for so long. The priests of these five gods are taught at a grand bastion called the High Temple, which lies near the river Pariina that flows from the Khanate Mountains, located in the Pariina Hills. The priests and priestesses that are tasked to join the royal council originate from this place, and are called the Hands of God/of the Goddess.

Goddess of Peace
She promotes peace and tranquility, discourages strive and conflict of all forms, asks her followers to resolve all issues fairly, and encourages peaceful co-existence wherever possible, only to be broken to protect, never to conquer.

God of Virtue
He encourages people to bring out the best in themselves and others and stands for the idea that virtue in itself will lead to higher prosperity. While greed, envy, and anger corrupt and destroy, generosity, openness and kindness are what grows a civilization.

God of Essence
Also known as the God of the Elements, he is the god that gifted mankind with the gift of natural magic and granted them the ability to control parts of the world around them. He encourages people to think before they act, and to use their intellect and rationality to make actions and decisions that benefit all of society.

Goddess of Benevolence
She is the goddess of warmth and life, and promotes compassion and growth both physical and mental. The spreading of her love grows crops, families, and civilizations, and the warmth of compassion given and shared is what leads to true happiness.

God of Judgement
The god that holds you accountable for your actions, makes sure you obey the law of the gods, and judges all the souls sent to the afterlife, governing the spirits of those deceased. His being embodies the consequences for not listening to the voice of the gods, and shows that you must have respect for their teachings.
The Royal family of Darasce has lead the people of Yvonta for over 400 years. They ascended to the throne after the last member original royal family died during an invasion, without leaving an heir, and one of the bastard sons of the then-deceased king was granted the power of the crown, which started the Darasce family. Now the family firmly holds a grip on the throne as the late king Hylan has finally transformed his nation into one that could defend itself, leaving his crown to

- King Hylan Darasce | Currently Deceased
Hylan Darasce came into power as a young man, after his parents and wife had been killed in the umpteenth invasion of their lands, and swore on that day he would do everything in his power to make Yvonta strong enough to finally stand against its aggressors. As he ruled, his word became deed, as he built the military and trained his men to fight, taking full advantage of what his land had to offer. Quickly, he grew Yvonta from a once humble kingdom to a powerful empire that earned the respect and fear of its neighbours.

Yvonta was being led into a Golden Age when King Hylan suddenly died shortly after a banquet. The healers said that it had been a bad food poisoning, but many rumours were spread about the king having been poisoned. He was laid to rest in the catacombs of the royal palace, next to his wife, across from his parents.

- Crownprince Thyran Darasce (MC) | Currently Alive: 24 y/o
Thyran Darasce is the eldest son of King Hylan, and the prince who stands to inherit the crown. He grew up in the midst of his father's restructuring of the kingdom, and from a young age he started to train with the palace guard. He proved to be a very intelligent and talented young man, and was adored by many of the court as a young man. When he grew mature, many people were swayed by his charismatic smile and social behaviour. However, at the same time, faint rumours began to circulate that behind the smile of the prince hid a cold, tactical mind, who had interests that were not aligned with the morals and ethics of the people of Yvonta, but these rumours had until so far been nothing more than that.

- Prince Errick Darasce | Currently Alive: 16 y/o
Errick Darasce is the younger brother of Thyran, currently in his teens, but not much is known about him outside the court. He was born a month before the death of his mother, and he is said to have inherited the intelligence of his father and brother, but not their social skills. This is further affirmed by the fact that he rarely leaves the royal palace and spends much of his days in the library and with his teachers, only seen outside during important occasions.
There was once a time when the kingdom of Yvonta was considered weak. It was less than a century ago that the world knew Yvonta to be a place of gentle and giving people, but now they are a force to be reckoned with. Their fertile land and natural resources were the cause of a near millennia's worth of various violent invasions and short occupations. The pain inflicted on their land hardened the Yvontian people with each war, but it wasn’t until King Hylan, who came to power as a young man, that the kingdom began to fully turn away from the peaceful nature that had left them vulnerable for so long. Hylan built their military and trained their men to fight, he began to take full advantage of what their land had to offer and grew Yvonta from a once humble kingdom to a powerful empire that earned the respect and fear of its neighbors.

Yvonta was the most prosperous that it had been in far too long when King Hylan suddenly died, leaving the throne to his eldest son. The Prince was like his father in many ways, and those traits were what made most people pleased with the idea of his rule, but the prince was more ambitious than his father had been, wanting expansion, and it was because of this greed, as some called it, that had other folks wary of the soon to be king.

- Lyla | Currently Alive: 22 y/o
Lyla came from a poor human family that originally came from a small town near the Khanate Mountains, but had their home destroyed after one of the nomad raids. They travelled to Lyrah to seek aid, but left their pre-teen daughter at the High Temple, thinking it would be a better fate for her than staying with her family. During her stay, she and Adela followed much of their studies together as they were both pupils of Priestess Helenys. After they finished their studies, Lyla asked to be stationed in the capital to also be able to take care of her family, which was granted. You have only seen her twice since she left, but she still regards you as a good friend.

You have never met Lyla’s family, but she has told you that her mother fell ill shortly before she left the High Temple. Her mother died to the illness, and recently her father has fallen ill as well. She also has a younger brother called Marc, who is apprenticing under one of the blacksmiths in Lyrah, and as far as you know is doing well for himself.

Lyla is a caring and very friendly person. She has a knack for cheering people up and tries her best to be cheerful towards others, despite the hardships she endured. You also know that, in private, she has a bit of a wild side, sneaking off at night to explore or stealing food to share with you. She also likes to tell jokes and tall stories, some of which may sometimes be a little bawdy, but are often very entertaining.

- Evelyne | Currently Alive: 22 y/o
Evelyne grew up in Lyrah as the half-elven daughter of a jeweller and apprenticed in her father’s workshop. Her mother had died in childbirth, so she and her father worked together in their shop to make ends meet. During this time, she met Priest Kaegan, who during their meeting discovered that Evelyne had a knack for natural magic. With permission from her father, Evelyne accompanied the priest back to the High Temple to be taught as a priestess and in the art of natural magic, during which she met you. To two of you were taught together by Kaegan, and after she completed her studies she was stationed in a few different places due to her abilities, but has spent the last one and a half years in Port Egress.

You know that she has a father in Lyrah, but do not know his name or what he looks like.

She is a smart and inquisitive person who isn’t afraid to ask questions, but she can also be quite stubborn and has a slight supercilious attitude, although not intentionally. She has always been quite amiable towards you, and considers you an equal and a friend.

- Meya Hayard | Currently Alive: 23 y/o
Meya is the youngest child from a minor noble family from Alder. Due to her bookish disposition and position in the family, her parents thought it best to send her to the High Temple to train as a priestess instead of marrying her off. After her studies were completed, during which she met Adela, she returned to Alder to join the temple there, but returned to the High Temple every so often to participate in the important holy events and gatherings.

She doesn’t talk much about her family, but you know that her parents are still alive, and that she has two big brothers, but you’ve never met them and don’t know their names.

Meya is a shy girl and doesn’t easily trust strangers, but she has a kind and gentle personality and is a great listener. She is also very booksmart, but does not have much experience outside of her family and the temple.

- Lucan | Currently Alive: 28 y/o
Lucan was one of the priests that helped you during your studies alongside priestess Helenys. He originally came from Amoa after being sent to the High Temple by his parents, and has since only left the High Temple once or twice on orders of the Temple. He had finished his studies a decade ago and since then has been aiding the teachers and new acolytes with studies and advice. After you finished your studies, he was also appointed as a new teacher by the High Priest, and has since been guiding acolytes in the temple of Virthil.

You actually don't know anything about Lucan's family, except for the fact that his parents should still be alive and in Amoa.

Lucan is a calm man, and has a calming influence on anyone around him as well. He is very good at explaining things both logically and understandable, but does not speak much outside of religious context.

- High Priest Donovar Eragar | Currently Alive: 62 y/o
The current High Priest, Donovar, is still relatively young to hold the position, but older than most. You’ve only met him on occasion as he frequently travels between the capital and the High Temple, and he usually does not mingle much with the lower priests. You know that he comes from a major noble family in Port Egress and that he served much of his earlier life as a priest in Lyrah, before being elected as High Priest.

You know that the High Priest’s family, House Eragar, is the ruling family in Port Egress, appointed by king Hylan’s great-grandfather, but you know little about their current activities or composition.

The few times you met the High Priest he seemed to be a kind and sociable man, although he was often quite curt to others. He usually had little time to speak more than a few words to you when you saw him, but when he did they were always kind, asking you how your studies went and telling you your mother would be proud of you.

- Priest Kaegan | Currently Alive: 46 y/o
Kaegan is one of the higher ranking priests in the temple, advisor to the High Priest, and also an adept natural magic user, as well as a friend of your mother and your natural magic teacher. You know that he grew up near the High Temple and once his ability was discovered, was quickly let into the fold. He and the High Priest studied together and it is known that Kaegan and the High Priest are good friends. He was also the one who looked after and taught your mother when she arrived at the High Temple until her death.

You know that Kaegan was an only child and that his parents passed away several years ago, leaving him with a small plot of land near the High Temple which he occasionally returns to.

Kaegan has a warm but strict personality and has often reprimanded you and others during lessons, but has outside of your studies been nothing but kind and cordial. He expects the best of his students and colleagues, but cares about people’s well-being and often tries to give advice and help to allow the growth of one’s character.

- Priestess Helenys | Currently Alive: 37 y/o
Helenys joined the High Temple after her husband and children died during a raid on their town near Virthil some twenty years ago. Since then, she has been one of the main teachers for most new priests and priestesses, and is also one of the keepers of the library, spending much of her time archiving and researching the holy texts in the temple.

You know that she used to have a husband and two daughters, but do not know anything about any other family of hers.

Helenys has a gentle personality but great passion for her work, and heavily encourages her students to acquire that same passion. She has told you that you are one of the most enjoyable people she has had the pleasure of teaching, and is responsible for much of the knowledge you have gained.

- Captain Edric | Currently Alive: ? y/o
Edric was the captain of the escort that travelled with you to Lyrah. You don't know much else about him.

Edric is a very serious and direct individual, who only says the absolute minimum that is required. But, although he is very curt, so far he has been nothing but polite and professional towards you.

Adela was an infant when she was given to the Temple. She had a childhood like no one before her, growing up in a place considered to be Yvonta's most sacred. She was raised by priests and priestesses, mages and seers, taught to be devoted wholly to the gods and their ways. Even the most learned and faithful of the men and women that lived in the Temple had once lived in the outside world, but Adela had never once left. She knew the history of her kingdom well, the laws and the customs, but had never experienced it for herself. It was for this reason that when King Hylan died, Adela was the one that was sent to the palace with the intent to help council the prince. With each new Yvontian king that came to sit on the throne, the Temple chose a priestess to join the royal council; a woman to balance the king, a godly person to balance the thoughts of a ruler with more power and responsibility than they know what to do with. The prince, and soon to be king, had ambitions thought to be violent and evil by many in the Temple and Adela's sole purpose was to keep the young monarch in check.

After more than two full weeks on the road, your travel has finally come to an end. The world outside the High Temple is large, much larger than what is visible from the confines of its walls. With the Khanate Mountains to the west, the Lucent Oceans to the east, and the surrounding kingdoms of Gaohlas and the Umbral Dynasty to the north and south, Yvonta stretches for many miles in all directions. Your carriage, which had come to pick you up from the capital city of Lyrah itself, took you on the most direct road from the temple bastion to the capital, but the Goddess had blessed your journey with good weather, allowing your eyes to wander across the landscape without hindrance.

The journey itself was peaceful as well. The convoy that was sent to aid you on your travel was well-guarded but small enough to travel fast. The landscape you came across on your journey was pleasurable to the eye on most occasions, as the luscious green Pariina hills made way for calm, grassy plains and forests. You passed by through numerous towns, none of them important enough to be marked on maps, but a much nicer place to sleep than a campsite could offer. Farmsteads and other small hamlets dotted the landscape as well, and much of inland Yvonta was tranquil and rural. However, the heavy marks from Yvonta’s unfortunate history were visible every so often, as you passed a number of burned and ruined farms, void of life and warmth.

The soldiers accompanying you were noticeably withdrawn during the trip. They would politely but curtly answer your questions or partake in conversation with you, but they mostly kept to themselves and kept a very serious demeanour. None of them seemed very interested to share much with you, but you knew from the crest of their captain that they were part of the Palace Guard, which meant you would likely see them patrolling around the royal palace.

On the eighteenth day of your journey, you heard the soldiers that usually rode ahead return to the convoy, calling to their comrades, and from the window of your carriage, you could see the large walls and towers of Lyrah rising in the distance, your destination mere hours ahead. The large plots of freshly sown farmland were the last of rural Yvonta you got to see before your group arrived at the Ivory Gate, the main entrance to the city. It was busy at the gates, as it was the middle of the day, but your carriage got quickly escorted through after some shouts by the captain, onto the bustling main street of Lyrah.

Outside of your window, the masses of the capital went by their daily lives. Hundreds of people passed you as you were led towards the palace, going from place to place, buying and selling products, talking and arguing with each other. Merchants peddling their wares, criers shouting the latest news, the city was full of life. You could hear and smell a cacophony of things, all accompanied by the gentle sea breeze that swept in from the southside of the city, carrying the salt of the Gulf of Teron with it.

---

After about an hour of being navigated across the streets of the capital, you can see the thick walls of the royal palace coming into view, at first hidden behind the many roofs and buildings of Lyrah. The portcullis and heavy wooden door are opened, guarded by six soldiers similarly equipped like your escort. You can see the captain of your guard exchanging some words with one of the soldiers before you’re waved through, and your carriage is led into the courtyard, onto a large plaza in front of a beautiful garden. A long, inclining road leads around the garden up to a smaller plaza in front of the actual palace and towards the main entrance. The domed roofs and towers take up much of the sky, with roof tiles glistening in the midday sun.

A brief knock can be heard on your door a couple of seconds after your ride has come to a stop. “We have arrived, your Holiness. We are to escort you to the throne hall for an audience with king Thyran.” The gravelly voice belongs to the captain of your escort, who introduced himself as Edric at the start of your journey, although you know little else past his name. Outside you can hear the other soldiers dismounting and the sounds of other guards conversing with their friends, as well as the soft song of some birds chirping in the garden.

I’ve spent many hours of my life examining maps of Eden, partly for education but more often than not, for my own curiosities. I know the continent well, but I know Yvonta even better. I know every road from the Temple to the capital and how long each would take. When I learned that a carriage and traveling party would be sent for me from Lyrah, I had estimated that the journey would take nearly three weeks. I thought I had been prepared for the ride ahead of me, but spending more than two weeks on the road was easier said than done.

The carriage was sizeable and that was what made the first few days of the trip bearable. By the end of the first week, the thin layer of padding over the wooden bench gave little cushion, leaving the muscles along my thighs and back aching from the rumble and sway of the carriage over the bumpy road. By the end of the second week, even the scenery had grown old, driving me to start and finish the needlepoint I brought along, despite my hatred for the tedious pastime. Despite my own dislike for small talk, I had done my best to try and strike up conversation with the guards around the carriage through the windows or when we stopped for the night, but I had quickly learned they shared my same level of interest in casual conversation; so the majority of the trip was spent in silence with only bare greetings and farewells each morning and night. The last few days of traveling were spent attempting to sleep in order to help pass time- until the shadow of the Lyrah’s walls floated over the carriage as they passed through gates.

For the first time in days, I found the world beyond the carriage of interest as we rode slowly through the capital. I’ve examined maps of the large city and seen hundreds, if not thousands, of sketches of the streets and buildings, but they were nothing compared to experiencing it all in person. The bustle of the people was nearly overwhelming and for the first time, I found myself happy to be within the confines of the rumbling carriage. The High Temple was large and filled with people, though the energy was calm and quiet, not something I had ever truly realized until entering the buzzing streets of Lyrah.

It’s only once we reach the entrance of the place walls that I force myself away from the window and back into my seat. I’ve dreamed of getting the see the royal palace in person simply for the beauty of it, but a nervousness I hadn’t felt until this very moment settled over me and caused my chest to tighten. When the role of the council’s priestess had fallen onto me, I had been unsure if I was truly the right person for the position, but never scared. During the journey here, I felt various sorts of restlessness and fatigue, but never nervousness. I had been sure of myself up until now; something about the still ride over the smooth bricks that paved the way to the palace doors gives me an anxious feeling.

I don’t realize that I have closed my eyes until I have to force them open again as the carriage comes to a stop. I barely have time to take a calming breath before a knock sounds at the door, but the words that follow cause me to exhale heavily. “M’lord, surely—“ I sigh and open the door on my own to step out into the daylight for the first time since setting off that morning. “Surely I can have a moment to freshen up?” I ask as I motion down to myself.

My attire is hardly the fine clothes of the usual women that might arrive in a royal carriage, but rather the plain clothes of a clergy member. My dress is of simple design and cut, made up of stiff and undyed cotton that sits on my body in a way that would likely seem unflattering compared to the tailored dresses of wealthier women. A hand-sewn scarf covers my dark hair and wraps over my shoulders, the fabric a shade of red wine and embroidered with gold-colored thread, and held in place with a bronze pin. As plain as my appearance might be considered, I am still disheveled from the ride with a wrinkled dress and hair in need of being brushed and twisted into a braid once again. I had expected to see the new king swiftly after my arrival, but not before receiving the chance to get into a state more appropriate for meeting him.

Before Edric has the chance to respond, I shake my head as if to take back my question. His wording made it clear we are to go now and I won’t make a fuss within my very first moments of being at the palace. “Never mind, never mind,” I say quietly, drawing in a slow and deep breath. When I exhale, I make myself push aside my fears and ignore the tired ache in my body. My posture relaxes and my expression calms as I tuck away any stray locks beneath my scarf in hopes of looking somewhat presentable. I do my best to don a hint of a smile in an attempt to wipe away the overly observant look that tends to take over my features. “I suppose we shouldn’t keep him waiting.”

Edric nods, his expression ever-stoic, before turning around to climb the road that leads towards the palace proper, expecting you to follow. The carriage you exited is meanwhile quickly led away by servants to what you assume would be the stables, and most of the guards that accompanied you so far are leaving your side as well. In their place, six new guards have joined your flanks, three on each side, all wearing the shining armour and attire of the royal guard, a stark contrast to the travelling outfits your previous party members wore.

The palace courtyard is not nearly as busy as the streets you just traversed, but there are still a good number of people going about their day, some donned in beautiful clothes whilst others are dressed in modesty similar to yours. All of them, however, take at least several moments to examine the new arrival and her entourage, but none of them seem to be interested enough to gaze for much longer than that.

Before long, Edric has guided you up the path, towards the palace doors. The gigantic dark wooden doors, with beautifully carved imagery, are open, are guarded by two men stationed on each side. They give Edric a brief soldier’s salute when you enter the palace halls, but do not pay you and your bodyguards much attention besides that.

The halls themselves, much like the palace as a whole, are enormous. Long hallways of white stone and red carpet comprise the entrance hall of the royal palace with pillars and flags adorning the walls. Groups of finely dressed men and women walk and converse in these halls, and while it is much calmer and orderly in here, one might say that the palace halls and the streets of Lyrah share a lot in common still. If there was ever a demonstration of the wealth of Yvonta, this would be it.

The lords and ladies inside treat you much the same as those outside, but Edric pays them little heed. Instead, he leads you right down the halls, up the flight of marble stairs, which eventually lead you into the throne hall.

The throne hall, in contrast to the halls downstairs, is currently nearly empty, save for the stationed guards. The many chairs on either side of the halls are vacant, as are the throne and the seats beside it. Behind the large throne stand a large statue depicting a sword with scales as its hilt, the symbol of the God of Judgement, and a representation of the absoluteness of the king's decree.

In the middle of the room, you can spot three figures currently in conversation, one of which is shadowed by two men clad in full armour, swords at their sides. The man, whilst not extremely broad-shouldered or muscled, still has a visible aura of power and authority, and while he is not currently wearing a crown, there could be no doubt in anyone's mind that this man had to be prince Thyran, the soon-to-be-king. The two men in conversation with the prince, who were also much older-looking than the royal, both wore attire that marked them as high nobility and possible members of the royal council.

As you enter the throne room, one of the guards stationed at the entrance yells out: "Lord Edric and companions!", which prompts the three men to halt their discussion and look over towards your group with curious eyes. Captain Edric halts your troop and takes a step aside, allowing the three to get a clear view of yourself as well as allowing you to step forward if you wish. "Your Highness, I have returned from the High Temple and brought the chosen one, as you requested. Allow me to introduce Her Holiness Priestess Adela, chosen Hand of the Goddess, Legate of the Temple, Emissary of the Gods."

I follow close behind Edric as we make our way to the palace proper, keeping the pace of the men that surround me. Like the passers by, I spare the strangers a few curious looks before glancing away again to a different part of this new world. No amount of sketches and paintings have truly prepared me for just how large the palace is. I was barely able to fully take in the splendor of the outer appearance of the massive structure before our group suddenly passed through a large set of doors that opened to the grand foyer. The amount of people filing about in the hallways is shocking and is the thing I notice even before the fine decoration of the halls around me. The Temple often has visitors, but not so many as this. While it is considerably calmer inside than out in the courtyard, it’s strange to see so many people that don’t truly belong inside the palace loitering in the hallways. Such a sight would have greatly upset the High Priest if this number of visitors filled the halls.

I’d fallen my thoughts and didn’t realize until I found myself walking up a set of stairs. Peeking over my shoulder, I see that we’ve already walked down the length of the hall and past the groups of wealthy men and women. Edric stops long enough to have a new set of doors open and I look forward again as we step into the throne room. My steps slow and I fall slightly behind the groups escorting me as I look around the room. My gaze flickers over across the seats and the finely carpeted floor until the finally stop at the head of the room. I take in the sight of the statue behind the empty throne, a representation of the God of Judgment. Such a large display and yet I cannot even be sure of how seriously the new king will take the gods, one of which will tower behind him as he rules.

I stop only once Edric does, waiting for him to step aside so that I am able to get a proper look at the men before us. Though we’ve never met, it becomes clear to me immediately that you are the prince I traveled so long and far the council. My face holds a blank expression as my eyes roam over you slowly, perhaps too boldly. Edric’s list of titles, though short, causes the corner of my lips to lift in a subtle smirk as I shake my head. Hand of the Goddess, Legate of the Temple, Emissary of the Gods. Never before now have I been called anything but Priestess Adela or, more commonly and plainly, Adela.

My eyes meet yours for just a moment before my head bows and my body lowers in a curtesy. “It is a pleasure to finally you, my prince. Thank you for the invitation to join your council, it is a great honor.” I rise to my full height again and place my hands behind my back.
