Six feet under the dirt
It was only a single year ago that the world had finally recovered from the Covid-19 virus pandemic. The world's economies had just now started to get back on their collective feet and the people of the world breathed a sigh of relief at finally getting back to normal once the quarantines were lifted. If people only knew how good they actually had it during these times, they wouldn't have complained if they knew what was to come next. Shortages of toilet paper, social distancing and having to wear masks out in public would've been a walk in the park, if we only knew how desperate things could really get.

Sasha Kazinsky sat in the passenger side seat of the large black SUV and nervously wrung her hands as the hulking vehicle climbed the dirt mountain road at break neck speeds. It took a corner a little too fast and the load of cargo stowed in the rear shifted ominously as the rearend broke lose and skidded dangerously near the shoulder of the road. "Please honey can you slow down a little bit?" Sasha asked as she leaned over to the driver's seat to her husband Scott. "You are scaring me and the kids."

Sasha looked over her shoulder at each of her children, one on each side of the SUV's rear seat, her 16 year old daughter, Kassy (NSFW) and on the other side directly behind her sat her 17 year old son, Aaron. Both of them had their hands clutched onto the handles located above the windows, a look of concern on their young faces. Poor Aaron had missed his graduation from high school due to the Corona virus and both of them were being forced to repeat the grades they'd been forced to end early thanks to China's melding with bio weapons, neither was happy about it, now this! Of course the 30 year old male seated between her children had it the worst, even if it was his own fault. Ben Kain, the kids uncle and Sasha's younger brother had been staying with the family during his recovery when this catastrophic event occurred. Ben had taken to smoking cocaine during the Corona virus pandemic and after a short stint in rehab he'd come to stay with the family. She desperately hoped he could keep his shit together, but she knew full well her brother's constitution wasn't terribly strong.

Her attention was snapped back to the front of the truck as the emergency signal sounded over the truck's radio again, it had been doing so for the past 3 days. The following prerecorded message played in a robotic voice:

' Attention US citizens! The CDC has issued a state of emergency and the US government has issued an order of Marshal Law do to civil unrest after the outbreak of an unknown pathogen was released. The source of the infection appears to have started in Los Angeles California and is quickly spreading outward at an unchecked level of speed. Symptoms include a high fever and a loss of basic logical thought. The Infected seem to lose all inhibitions and act like animals in heat, obsessed with fornication and spreading the disease to others. If you suspect someone maybe infected you are instructed contact the national guard and quarantine them until medical professionals can intervene. Under no circumstances are you to make contact with someone showing symptoms. All roads are closed and there is a travel ban being strictly enforced.....'

Sasha reached up and shut off the radio, she simply couldn't bare to hear it anymore. Thank God after the Covid 19 scare, Scott had stockpiled supplies and bought the mountain chalet. Their house in LA was now far too dangerous to stay in the city and so they'd packed up and headed for the Rocky Mountains. Scott had to run a military roadblock in order to escape the metropolitan area, and the SUV had taken some bullets to the engine during the escape, but soon they'd be safe far away from the city and all the infected that filled the streets.

In the year since Covid-19 took the world by storm everything society had known before had crumbled and withered away. The fact that there were even radio towers to transmit mass messages was a surprise, but communication networks had still been maintained, at least for the time being.

As Scott Kazinsky sped through the mountain pass he tried his best to drown out his wife’s concern that he was speeding unnecessarily. “Sasha, you saw them back there as we entered the mountains. There’s been no turns to lose them. I don’t give a fuck if we’ve gone fifteen miles in here, hold onto your seat until we hit a few crossroads.” He told his wife, they still had a bit to go until they would be at their Rocky Mountain oasis.

Meanwhile in the backseat, Aaron was doing just as his father instructed, holding on for dear life as his uncle slid back and forth against him and his younger sister. Not only had Aaron missed out on his high school graduation, with the world the way it was, the football scholarship he had earned was all but a thing of the past.

“You doing okay over there, sis?” He asked, turning to his sister, looking past their uncle who was simply trying his best to stay in his seat. “This is all pretty fucked up. But we’re pretty lucky to have a getaway plan like this, right?”

Sasha blew off the scolding Scott had just given her, it was ridiculous afterall. The point of a roadblock wasn't pursuit during an actual pandemic, if brazen enough to run it, they weren't going to follow you, their job was to maintain the road closure. This of course hadn't stopped her from checking the rearveiw mirror several times, but thank god they didn't seem to be being followed. The truck had been damaged and sure the temperature gauge was beginning to climb on the dashboard but it seemed to look like they would be able to make it to the chalet. The other reason for not making arguments with Scott was because he was the one that had the forethought to "supply up" after the Covid scare. He was the one that had bought all the canned and dry freeze food supplies. He was the one that had gone through the process of buying guns (no easy thing in California). And of course he was the one that had used a large portion of their life savings to secure a remote chalet deep in the mountains where their family might indeed find some measure of safety during this new catastrophe. He was essentially responsible for their family having any chance at all at making it through this horrible mess. "I understand Honey, but if you keep pushing the truck like this it's gonna die before we get to the cabin." She said softly.

It certainly wasn't her brother Ben, he was nearly useless. The withdraws had a slick layer of sweat on his forehead and his hands shook regularly. He'd been nearly bed ridden when they'd decided to leave the city and Scott had to help him into the truck.

When the tense silence was finally broken by Aaron asking if Kassy was alright. Kassy's eyes were as big as saucers and she shook her head nervously without answering with words. Ben feigned a smile at her, trying to give her some kind of comfort, but the dark circles under his eyes and the sweat on his brow didn't calm her.

"She's tough, just like her mother, eeh-eehron!" Ben added to his nephew making the same joke he'd been making for years since the Key&Peele sketch had come out.

"Did you guys hear what they were calling it before we left? The disease I mean. The were calling it Pornvid-69....cause it makes you into a sex crazed maniac!" Kassy said in a trance like state as if her young mind couldn't quite get the joke. Uncle Ben did and began laughing hysterically.

"KASSY PLEASE.... Don't talk like that, And Ben stop laughing it's not funny!" Sasha scolded, but the truth was she had heard the very same thing. This new disease made it's victims lose all human decency and turn into rape monsters who's only concern was fucking and spreading the disease. "Pornvid-69" might actually be a good name for it regardless of the irony.

"Honey, I think this is the road right here! If we keep going straight we'll end up going up to the Edward's chalet." Sasha pointed at the side road leading up the mountain. She was well aware Scott knew full well where the road was but she desperately wanted to change the subject from the obscene topic the kids had been talking about.

Scott shook his head as his wife scolded their daughter simply for stating the facts of what this new virus had adopted as its name. “Sasha, don’t scold her for referring to it by the name it’s taken on. It’s fitting, and it doesn’t belittle its effects like what the medical industry refers to it as. Pornvid-69 is not to be reckoned with.” He told his wife as he looked back to his daughter through the rear view mirror. “Don’t worry baby, you know daddy will always protect you.” He told with a calm, fatherly smile as he rest his hand on Sasha’s thigh.

Once they had made it to the fork in the road towards the Edward’s chalet Scott began to slow the vehicle down, easing up on the throttle to preserve the engine. “See that, guys? We’ve almost arrived. We’ve got a supply of food and ammo ahead to last three generations.” Of course he hadn’t thought that in these times three generations could mean three generations of inbreeding.

Meanwhile Aaron continued to try to calm Kassy, smiling as he used his phone to take a selfie of them and their uncle Ben before posting it to Instagram with the mountains in the background. “It’s no high school graduation, but at least I’ve got these two in my #QuarantineSquad.” He typed out before posting. “See, we’ve just got to try and find what normalcy we can in all of this.” Of course that was much easier said than done. A new normal was quickly approaching.
