The Mysteries of Stephanie Wainwright (and Her BFF) (W/Redneck Queen)

Stephanie smirked. "He didn't mean the singer of Culture Club, Rye. Nancy's best friend in the books is George? A girl? He couldn't figure out how to connect you in except through Ned, but hey... Don't hear me complaining!" She chuckled softly.

"Seriously, who do I act like, and try to get everything of? I'd loved to had the movie car, but it's like vintage before seat belts... Or has just those lap things. Or even Pamela's 70something Mustang. I'm happy with my 08, though."

She shrugged, "So yeah. He meant THAT George." She'd let him check in with the 'rents to see if they ate, and would help Rylan carry the plates across the street.

Stephanie was enjoying the company of her best friend, even though she knew it wouldn't last much longer. Police Captain Stephen Wainwright was finishing up (or at least it sounded like it) frying the chicken, and he appeared in the doorway. Since he always called them by the fictional characters' names in Steph's favorite book series, it was no surprise when he appeared and said, "Hey, Ned... Your parents are, yet? If they haven't tell them not to. I'm seeing that you go home with two leg quarters and a pile of corn." He smirked, "Tell em I said yo and let them know about my plans for you before you head to West Point. And again, congrats. They know you better than I do, after all; so their feedback is vital to the party... Actually, celebration." He caught Stephanie. "Stop rolling your eyes, Nancy!"

"Dad... I... Well... I mean we're like those characters, but that's not really us."

"You two look like them, especially together, even if he's more like a... Okay, I'm forced to go there... Boy. George."

Stephanie head butted the table... Purposely very melodramatic. She arose as she grabbed a plum from the fruit bowl.

“ Boy George? Wow.... okay. I’ll let my parents know sir.” Rylan said as he laughed a little he liked boy George’s music but that was about it, boy George was as gay as they came heck he even made Freddie Mercury look straight. He had to admit his hair as a little unruly but he couldn’t help it, he’d tried everything from straightening products to getting it cut yet when it grew out it turned into a dark brown mop on his head. It was just naturally curly, he hated it at times especially during the summer when the humidity was high cause his hair would frizz horribly. @Frozen Princess

“ Oh yeah Georgie sorry didn’t get the reference. It’s been awhile since I’ve read the books or seen the movie , I was always more of a hardy boys kind of person. When I had time to read a book that is. Anyways guess my parents are still out so I’ll put there’s in the fridge, they can eat it later or whatever. So Friday night about what five thirtyish? You better make some of those brownies, I can bring the popcorn and other junk food.” Rylan said as he rubbed the back of his neck, smiled he was really excited about his movie date with her even if it wasn’t technically a date he could at least think it was. He’d also tel his parents about the celebration, everything his best friend’s father wanted to do for him since he’d gotten early acceptance into West Point.

Stephanie giggled. "You are so borrowing my Nancy Drew's!" She thought about the brownies. "Technically, they're called Blondies, but yeah, they'd go great. With pretty much anything. You know I don't do horror, so expect the most scary thing to be The Twilight Zone or The Outer Limits... Something like that. And text me some movies before Friday that you'd like."

Stephen was the one to raise an eyebrow at the offered time. "You don't know Nancy and her movie nights do you? She's going to pick an hour or two block of TV episodes and two movies, and expect you to have at least one long one of two hours plus. Now if you want to be stuck over here because it went til almost two in the flipping morning..."

"Daaaaaaad!" Stephanie gasped laughing. Turning to Rylan, she said calmly, "Make it four and you got a date."

“ Blonde brownies, alright I’ll read them but just because you want me too. I can stay a bit longer I mean my parents know where I’m at. I’ve been coming over here ever since I moved in across the street, it’s still early. Fourish it is then Nancy drew. “ Rylan said as he smiled, adjusted her half of the friendship necklace for her. He wished they could be more then friends but after she’d told him about her last boyfriend he understood why she didn’t seem interested, leaving her behind when he had to leave for West Point was going to kill least on the inside. He wanted to spend as much time with her as he could before then, often wondered if maybe the reason they’d hit it off as best friends was cause his parents were originally from the area. “ Mr Wainwright. Did you know my parents when they were our age? “

Stephen had gone back in the kitchen, had returned with his plate and glanced over to Rylan, as Stephanie noticed Rylan fixing the twist in her necklace. "My fault. I keep messing with it."

"Because he's the first boy to actually give you something meaningful and from the heart, maybe?" He said looking at Stephanie before turning his attention to Rylan. "Afraid not. Actually surprised she didn't tell you. I had just become captain of the precinct when you moved across the street... If you want to call that through alley that's even named, a street... That separates our houses... Only a few months before. We'd only been here ourselves for four years."

Stephanie looked away with a frown. "Completely ruined my tenth birthday..."

Stephen raised an eyebrow. "Oho. So the truth at last... Stop fiddling with the necklace! Geez, Nancy! Are you 17 or seven?!" As Stephanie put her hand back down, Stephen again looked at Rylan. "We're originally from River Heights, Ohio. Came out here a little over seven years ago because a position for a lieutenant opened up at the precinct I run. You moved here four years later, about five weeks after her messy breakup and I came this close" he gave a pinch, "to having to arrest that punk because he kept harassing her. Especially after I found out he wanted something she said no to." He looked at both of them. "I'm just glad you two hit it off. This is actually the way it should work. Friends first. Build a bond, through communication. Meet the folks. You've done everything by the unwritten book."

Stephanie nodded, looking at Rylan. "I've asked it several times... Why couldn't I have met you first?" She noticed the dad look. "I get it, dad, I've met him now." She then looked just as the grandfather clock chimed the hour of seven. "Are you sure you want to stay?"

"He can til curfew. When Grandpa starts chiming for ten, Ned's gotta get next door. Capisce?"

Stephanie smiled. "So... What do you want to do?"

“ We can go go for a walk or for a run. You know I’m a,wats yo for a run. “ Rylan said as he smiled back at her, he’d run back home before it got to late since they had school the next day. He didn’t know if he was nervous about going back because of being called Romeo all the time or if it was because of the vandalism thing that had gone down the previous night. There was also her dad talking to his parents about throwing a party to congratulate him on his acceptance, even a going away party. He didn’t want to leave her behind, that’s why he’d bought the necklace.

Stephanie nodded. "Yeah... Kinda messed up this morning, huh?" Well, can't run in a dress..."

"Why not? Your heroine ran in dresses and skirts. Don't forget how young ladies dressed in the 30s and 40s." Stephen said, shooing both towards the door. "Lighted paths. Hear me?"

With a roll of her eyes, Stephanie grinned and asked, "So... The park's road network? That could take over an hour. Lighted. We might see the leaves trying to turn or at least fading from summer green? Actually, there's an old evergreen tree on the main park road that I think you'd like..." She knew the one. It sat at the far end of one of the parking lots overlooking a scenic view. "No race, let's just enjoy the company..." She pointed to her room. "Phone free." She headed out the door.

Rylan smiled as he walked out the door with her, he had his phone on him but hardly ever got any messages unless they were from his parents or Nancy. His phone was always on vibrate, he was usually using it to listen to his music occasionally anyways. He reached for her hand but hesitated cause he knew it would make things awkward so he just stuffed his hands in his pocket, started walking towards one of the paths that lead to the park.

They walked silently toward the drive that led into the park, but about a good hundred yards from the entrance, she did a sort of hop, skip to start jogging, saying, "Okay, so we came to jog, let's jog." There was a sidewalk leading up the park drive to the first parking lot. "Side by side to the first parking lot, about quarter mile in. Then we'll have to single file because no more sidewalk to the second one and the scenic stop which has a kinda sidewalk. That's where I'd like to go first. What would you like to talk about on the half mile trek, there?"

“ I don’t know... I hate that I’ll have to leave after graduation. I mean I know it means nothing cause your not interested in me the way I’m interested in you. But ever since I saw you that first day after I moved in across from the street I fell in love with you nance! But no matter what you’ll always be my best friend no matter what, that’s why I bought the necklaces. “ Rylan chewed on his lower lip, rubbed the back of his neck as he looked down at the ground as he walked with her. Part of him wanted to reach for her hand, hold it against his heart but he was to nervous besides he didn’t want to get slapped for being to forward with her. He also wanted to kiss her just to prove to her not all guys were bad, again he didn’t want to get slapped for being to forward with her.

Stephanie seemed to get it. She noticed his hesitation, and wasn't sure how she really felt beyond best friends. "Rye. You're my best friend. You know that. That'll never change." She grimaced slightly and looked at her feet. "Fell in love, huh? I've... Kinda started having issues with the whole... At first sight thing." A sigh. "Well, about then." She shrugged. "Obvious reasons." She gave him a sad smile. "You've already shown me you're not like other guys, y'know." She seemed to have zeroed in on what he was thinking. "Score one for you, there. And there's this..." She clutched the necklace. "You heard dad. How many guys before you have given me anything from the heart? How many wanted to be friends first?" She cleared her throat; that answer was the same and she was pretty sure Rylan realized it also. None. He had been the first. "Come on. This path up into the park towards the scenic overlook is an uphill climb... Just like my recovery and our friendship. An uphill climb that's worth it at the end. Why I want to share the view with you."

“ I’m sure it is, I know there’s guys out there that make the good guys like myself look bad. But know this Nancy Drew I’d never hurt you ever, I understand your lack of interest in me when it comes to romance.” Rylan was a sweetheart, he could have any girl he wanted but the girl he wanted wasn’t interested. He understood why though, wasn’t about to ruin a good friendship because he wanted more then that. The dark haired boy had fallen in love with her when he met her for the first time, he’d keep that bit of information to himself because he didn’t want to feel the rejection of her telling him she didn’t feel the same.

They reached the top and through a clearing, they could see across Padilla Bay. The boats on the water looked like models... Except for the one belching smoke like someone taking a long puff of a cigarette for the first time. The far distant green almost in front of them was Guemes Island. "So? Was I right?" She asked with a grin.

(This was actually Bay View. A real town much farther North. I couldn't find a park close to Seattle, Edmond or anything with an unobstructed view of the seaways, nor Bay Meadow.)
