Parol and Lang were the two concepts of calling magic from the whisperer, or the Orat, an entity that could be heard sometimes by those that had the potential for calling. Lang was the concept of communicating physically with the Orat by way of speaking, using signs of hand motion, scripts, dress colors, physical objects, dancing… anything and everything had some value as signs used in lang. Parol was the concept of using thoughts and mental imagery to communicate with the whisperer. Those that were good with parol needed less lang to call magic. Those that weren’t good with parol required great knowledge of the many signs.
Many, many years ago the world was once on the break of damnation from a sudden demonic desolation. The world’s normality changed forever from there forward. Finally, the knowledge of magic was widely accepted throughout the nations, for that was the only way to ensure salvation. However, it was soon realized that the Mages that possessed the power needed some sort of balance to control their power. Therefore, the Black Tower and the Templars were formed. Finally, after much sacrifice, the King of Devastation was sealed away, not before leaving behind his words of warning.
When the stars blanket the skies,
With false hope for peace.
The sun will rise with rage once again.
She will awaken.
One with unbelievable power,
Will be your destroyer or your very savior.
They soon brushed off his warnings, assuming he was just trying to hype them into wars and hope was restored once more. Even still, not all nations fancied the idea of magic or the Black Tower’s ways.
There was great joy within the House of Mondoiret when Elise was born. King Leal and the Queen, Eliseabella, had been cursed with no children for quite a few years. It was a blessing from the Gods that Elise had arrived. Even so, the King wasn’t so sure. Something always seemed odd about his precious daughter. However, he could never gather any valid proof behind his accusations, allowing the King to turn a blind eye to his baby girl.
Then, the night after Elise’s fifth birthday, Eliseabella suddenly fell ill and died.
It started as small incidents around the castle that could be explained as a coincidence and easily contained. However, Leal soon realized the truth behind the prior suspicion of his daughter. The random fires, the sudden shattering of glass, it was all Elise’s doing, and she had no idea what she was capable of. He had to put a stop to it before she realized just what she was.
He had to save her soul from the damnation of magic.
The House of Mondoiret was one of the few who still condemned the use of magic. The very thought of the Black Tower’s beliefs disgusted the King. He saw all Mages as demons themselves. What else could be capable of such frightening power? And now, the demon had breached his kingdom, touched his very daughter! He was furious! How could he ever see his precious baby girl with the same eyes again? In a desperate attempt to hide the truth, he went against his very beliefs and sought out the only one he knew could help.
The very Magister of the Black Tower.
Upon request, she met with the King. However, she could not fulfill his request to release Elise of her ability to use magic. It was simply an impossible task to take away a piece of one’s soul. However, what she could do was prolong her normality by blocking her connection with the Orat. Which would halt her ability to use her magic. She explained that if she did this it would potentially last until her twenty-first year of age, however, it was only temporary and would ultimately depend on the strength of her magical capability. When Elise would awaken once again, she would be more powerful and the possibility of the Orat taking control would be great. The King graciously accepted the terms and the block was formed, allowing him to have his baby girl once more.
Years went by and it seemed Elise would grow into a fine young woman that her father might actually be proud of. Until one day when Elise was eleven, one of the boys in the courtyard taunted the girl about her deceased mother. She grew upset and soon, flames sparked, surrounding the two. With quick action of a few guards, the flames were easily put out before anyone got hurt and blamed on the drought. However, the King knew better and knew what he must do.
This time when the Magister met with the King, she had a proposal of her own. She was surprised Elise broke the spell so soon, and quite impressed that it was at such a young age. Indicating this little girl held frightening power within her. The Magister knew halting the Orat would only damage her in the end, for when her power fully developed it could be dangerous. Especially if she were to suddenly awaken. She warned him of this once again, then proceeded to try to convince him to allow the Black Tower to take Elise in and train her to use this power she possessed and fight for the greater good. King Leal grew offended at her proposal and demanded she place the spell. So, she did so. Knowing what would happen in the end.
All seemed well once again.
Soon, there was talk of Elise and marriage to a boy to unite Eleyar and Sykurin as one. The prince of Sykurin and the young princess Elise of Eleyar would meet frequently at banquets and balls hosted by one of their countries. The two did not seem to fare well at first, and it seemed neither did Leal and the King of Sykurin. Even so, over the few years, Elise was able to meet with the prince, she had grown to secretly respect the boy and his childish, boyish charm. Before that respect could be voiced, it seemed the two King’s views could not be shared, and the proposal was called off. Only to start a war between the two countries not long after.
Elise’s next use of magic was when she was alone in her chambers, after receiving word of the war to come. She was frightened and uncertain of what was happening to her. All she knew, was she felt more alive than she has ever felt in her entire life, like something in her that had been locked away was finally free. However, she knew what her father would think. So, she tried to hide it.
It didn’t last long before Elise’s handmaiden caught her using magic. This time, Elise refused to give it up. Furious, the King refused to allow Elise her freedom, making sure she was on constant guard.
Then word of a treaty being made with Sykurin pressured the King to consider an alliance as well, and soon, an agreement had been made between the House of Delione from Torbien. Elise was to marry prince Zarious to finalize the contract.
However, things did not go as planned. While on her way to Torbien, Elise and her party were ambushed by a Sykurian raiding party. Finally, after a near-death experience, the spell had broken completely from Elise, causing a force of energy to explode from her body, killing everything caught in the explosion. Frightened, she fled.
Ultimately, ending up at the Black Tower.

Elise had perhaps the greatest potential for parol that the Black Tower had seen in generations. They listened to her calling often and was most of the time impressed with how much of a connection she made when calling on the Orat for magic.
Elise buried her nose in books to learn her lang, spent late nights practicing her concentration on parol and soon found herself excelling on her way to actually having potential to become a Mage. And she had potential indeed. Before she knew it, Elise had found the black tower her home. Soon she found It refreshing to be an equal among others. If one called her by her title, she would scold them, reassuring them she was no different them they were, here at least.
Now, after passing all the phases with impressive skills, It was time for the Winter Solstice Tournament. If she were to pass this, then she would be able to finally be bonded with a templar.
