In one of her more inspired moments in office, Tsunade had developed a plan in order to help combat the Akatsuki threat. It was not teaching the kids new jutsu, nor was it anything of that sort. In fact, it was training. Realizing the many talents held in the Village Hidden in the Laves were just as varied as one might find out in the field. Tsunade was promoting training sessions between teams. Pairing the chunin off with others, Tsunade had paired off the brilliant yet lazy Shikamaru with the timid but determined Hinata. Given their chakra-control heavy styles, and their personalities, Tsunade had figured it would be the perfect pairing.
They had been sent off deep into the woods, until they'd finally come to a river. They did some basic exercises, before they moved out onto the river itself, where they would practice their jutsus, and spar against one another.
Shikamaru had, of course, kept Hinata at a distance with various ninja tools, moving farther down the stream, until at last he'd sent a shadow under the trees that overlooked the stream, hands of shadow restricting her right before she could touch him with her Gentle Fist technique.
