The setting is low fantasy, ideally with as little magic and supernatural stuff as possible to keep the focus on the humans. Our characters would be two members of the wealthy nobility, raised with all the privilege and responsibility attached to that status--including that of marrying for the political benefit of their families. Our characters' houses had long been allies, with our characters growing up as lifelong friends, playing together as children and remaining close as they entered adulthood. When finances made it prudent to marry them, they were both happy with the match, knowing they'd be able to do both their families a lot of good together.
There was just one little issue: they didn't love each other at all. At least, not that way.
It wasn't a terrible thing, of course. Hardly anyone, noble or commoner, could say they'd loved the person they'd married before they'd married them. Love was a luxury in marriage, not a requirement. Our characters liked each other quite well, and knew living together and sharing a bed would be no problem. The only obstacle was sex. They were both vigorous young adults with not inconsiderable needs, and knew they were entirely unequipped to satisfy those needs for each other; that sort of connection was something they'd simply never had. Still, that was hardly uncommon either. As long as they kept up appearances and did their bare minimum duty of producing an heir, no one would fault them for getting what they needed from others. Certainly, they wouldn't fault one another. Even before they were officially married, they'd agreed that they would both be free to have their fun with whoever else they pleased.
The arrangement served them quite well, and their marriage was a happy one. When they'd first come to their understanding, that had been the first time they'd discussed sex so frankly and directly, but they quickly found that barrier crumbling; it was nigh impossible to keep their respective sex lives a secret from one another, sharing a household and a bed as they did. As the years went by, they found themselves getting more and more comfortable sharing and discussing the details of their exploits, just as they'd always felt comfortable sharing everything else about their lives, and that openness brought them even closer than before. It even became normal for them to see and hear each other pleasuring themselves under the covers before falling asleep--why should they bother keeping that a secret, after all?
So, that's how we find them, still happy together after as many years as we please, probably with that whole business of an heir already dealt with. Their arrangement has been working perfectly; they're better friends than they've ever been, both getting laid regularly with plenty of other partners, and happy to compare stories when they both come home to bed. Then, something happens. One of our characters comes to their chambers to find the other going at it with a lover. Far from the first time this has happened, of course, but this time, the intruder feels something they never have before: jealousy.
What do you think? Plenty of drama and sexiness to be had, right? And lots of opportunities for varied smut, since I'm imagining we'd both play various lovers for each other's characters in addition to our half of the main couple.
