He sniffed the air and leaned down, growling to his brethren. They spoke in body language and quiet noises, analyzing the scents together. Close, he thought, very close. He looked for tracks. One of the wolves trotted out from the treeline for a moment, and then looked back at him. Yes, definitely a trail. And suddenly he was running. They all were. The hunt in full sway.
They had been feeding on a deer that they had taken down about 4:00 a.m. when he caught the scent of perfume. The reaction was instantaneous. They followed him obediently as he left the kill, though there were a few whimpers of complaint. That was over an hour ago. The sun wasn't up yet, but it would be soon. They turned sharply, keeping inside the treeline as they ran almost silently through the brush. In less than 15 minutes they were so close that he could hear her footsteps. They seemed oddly noisy, though she wasn't being loud... for a normal human.
The pack slowed and neared the edges of the trees. From the shadows he looked down the hill to the trail below. There she was, the source of the scent. The first thing he noticed was her deeply red hair. His teeth bared and he growled low in his throat. The pack understood what they were to do without even being told. They split into two groups, one heading off along the tree line to a spot where they could block the path in front of her when they revealed themselves. The other, ready to block the way back that she had come from. When both groups were ready, he let out a howl. They slowly walked out from the trees, starting to surround her.
