France â?? 1942

The night air whistled by the cockpit of Ethanâ??s P-38 â??Lightingâ?? as he flew over the Kraut occupied country. The fighter plane had been modified into a reconnaissance variant, all of its weapons replaced with cameras, leaving it extremely vulnerable to German fighters. He was counting on the cover of darkness and his own planeâ??s sky camouflage to give him some better protection. Looking out at the rolling countryside, he frowned, wishing that he could have had bombs and machine guns mounted on the wings rather than cameras. Taking pictures wasnâ??t going to kick the Nazis back to Berlin. But the brass just puffed out their chests and said that gathering intelligence was just as, if not more important than taking action.

The twin engine heavy fighter roared through the sky, and Ethan checked the fuel gauge with a watchful eye. Even though the P-38 had an extremely long range, crossing the Channel at night was still somewhat daunting of a task, considering the Luftwaffe were still running bombing runs over London. He didnâ??t want to run into a German formation on his way back to base â?? heâ??d be torn apart in seconds.

â??Alright, letâ??s get this over withâ?¦â? He muttered, beginning his search for German units below. Bases, armor, AA emplacements, anything that could be useful to the brass. The Germans were smart, though. They had camouflaged a lot of their equipment, making it nearly impossible to spot from this altitude, especially at night. The cloud cover, while hiding his plane from the Germans, also added to his dilemma. A gust of wind shook the airframe, blurring the image in the lens for a moment. He checked his fuel gauge again, looking out of the canopy over the engine.

Dangerously, he began to reduce his altitude, sacrificing the only real defense his aircraft had against detection. He knew the move was risky, and one that could potentially get him grounded for a few weeks, but if his lower altitude allowed him to pick up a better picture of the German positions, he was sure that nobody would mind. The altimeter crept lower and lower, while the ground grew closer, the trees becoming more defined, lights starting to stand out more.

â??There we goâ?¦â? Ethan said, snapping a few photographs of the closer German facilities. He wasnâ??t surprised though when the sound of his engines quickly drew attention from the Krauts. Deciding that now would be a good time to get back to a safe altitude, he quickly pulled back the stick, the nose of his plane jumping towards the sky.

The air around him was suddenly bathed in the blinding light of a searchlight, and for a moment, Ethanâ??s heart stopped. â??Shitâ?¦â?

The sky started exploding around him as the German AA batteries started opening up, twisted blasts of smoke and whirling shrapnel. He hoped to climb, escape the range of the batteries, but he had stirred up a hornetâ??s nest, and there was no way he was getting away without getting stung.

A well aimed burst exploded right in front of him, the residue from the blast instant coated the canopy, but instantly a bitter, cold wind blasted into his face where the fragments had broken through. One of his engines was sputtering and bleeding smoke, and he wasnâ??t sure he could keep the propeller from seizing up. â??Come on!â? He gritted his teeth, his eyes tearing up against the cold wind buffeting him.

The plane began to drift towards the left, the engine sputtering and seizing up. Fire and smoke burst in the skies around him, the whirling metal shards tearing apart the aircraftâ??s thin skin. He smelled the stinging scent of aviation fuel, he had to bail out. Wrenching back the canopy, he was instantly buffeted by the slipstream of freezing cold wind. The plane started to roll over, and he dropped out of the cockpit, slammed by the deceleration. Sucking freezing cold air into his lungs, he pulled the ripcord on his parachute, the thing unfolding and jerking him so hard that he nearly got whiplash.

The P-38 spiraled into the ground, the fuel bursting into flame on impact, the fireball rising into the sky. He was speechless, too busy to catch his breath. He soon became aware of a sharp pain in his right calf. Looking down, it was hard to see in the dark, but there was a dark stain spreading on his flight suit. He had caught a piece of shrapnel in his leg, and was bleeding. So now he was shot down, wounded, and stuck in Nazi occupied-Franceâ?¦ This was the start of one hell of a nightâ?¦

The ground approached quickly, too quickly, out of the night, his injured leg buckling under the impact as he slammed into the dirt. The cry that burst from his throat didnâ??t sound human, and he laid there, dazed and in pain for a few crucial moments before he was able to pull himself to a sitting position. He fought his way out of his collapsing parachute, limping away from the sight. German patrols were bound to swarm the area any minute, and with his injured leg slowing him down, heâ??d need every available second.

"C'est un avion d'alliés"
"Que??!"
"Pourquoi vole-t-il si bas?"
"Les Bâtards, Ils le frappent! Il descend!"

The sounds of the crash and explosion echoed around the city. The German batteries fell silent, however it would not take long for city to be full off Germans looking for the plane and it's aviator...so would the freedom fighters, the Free France Forces. It did not take long for the news to reach the ears of Elise Rousseau, the captain, leader, whatever you wanted to call it, of the base here.

"Letâ??s go pick him up before the Germans find the poor bastard". She stood up from where she had been sitting and she and about 10 or so other freedom fighters walked to the basement where they stored their weaponry. They quickly armed themselves with MAS-36 rifles. Annabelle, their doctor and surgeon brought a medical kit as she always did. They headed out in the night; they knew the city like the backs of their hands. The Germans however did not. They did not know about the sewer passages ways that the freedom fighters used when the city was too hot.

Elise lead the group through the sewers, she had the blue prints in her hands as they walked. She then stopped and said "This is about it, letâ??s get out of here" he said climbing up the ladder and pushing up the lid of the pot hole and climbed out. Sure enough, about a hundred meters away was the wreck of the P-38. She gestured for the rest to come quickly as she walked forward. The rest followed. She estimated it would be a good 10 minutes or so before the Germans found the wreck; they would have to move quickly.

It did not take them long to find the American pilot. The white armband they wore with the cross of Lorraine would tell him who they were and what they belonged to. She called Annabelle and she rushed past with her medical bag and looked at his wound in his leg. She shook her head and said "La blessure est mauvaise." in a grim voice.

Elise nodded and gestured to a few of the other members that had come to support him as they walked. She led them back to the pot hole as they walked. They lowers him inside gently before they rest of them files inside, Elise last closing the pot hole as she lowered her self. They walked back, but much slower this time, considering their present company, they spoke only to each other in French. They did not know if he could be trusted yet.

Elise was stood tall as she lead the way back. She looked strong and fierce. Her blond hair was put up into a bun and on top she wore a cap, also marked with the cross of Lorraine. Her green eyes looked forward as she walked forward. She was dressed simply, a brown sweater and long black woolen over coat. She also wore a pair of darker brown pants, also of wool for warmth and black boots. On her back was the rifle. She also wore a belt with a hand gun and a knife, should her adversary get a little too close for comfort. The rest of them were dressed much in the same way, except for Annabelle who carried the medical kit.

The sewer led right to the basement of their main base of operations. They climbed out and Annabelle rushed to the operating room, the American being carried behind her. The other members watched as they walked past them. Elise and the others deposited their weapons back to the basement and Elise walked into the operating room after Elise. He had been placed on a bed. The two men, Beau and Adrien remained as Annabelle got to work quickly. "Whatâ??s your name?" she asked him in English for the first time as she put on her white plastic gloves. She grabbed some scissors and cut away the part of his pants that were obstructing her view of the wound. Elise looked down at him and said "Don't pass out American. We didn't bring you all the way here just to have you die on us" she said looking at him. Both the girls spoke with a heavy accent as expected.

Ethan limped, stumbled, and sometimes even crawled away from the site where he had landed, the gusts of night wind pulling the parachute away. He was lucky that he didnâ??t get caught up in a tree, where the Krauts could shoot him at their own leisure. He could see the flow of flames where the P-38 had plunged into the French town. At least the fires and debris would have destroyed the cameras, though the Germans would probably move some of their machinery due to his intrusion.

Still, now he had to escape the swarms of German soldiers that were sure to be combing the area. If he werenâ??t injured, that might have been less of a problem, but the shrapnel would that gouged into his leg made walking practically impossible, let alone dashing across the French countryside in the dead of night. The muscle was screaming at him, and he knew that he was losing a lot of blood. His stops to rest were growing more and more frequent, his vision blurring somewhat. Add to that, his only weapon was a sidearm, a Colt M1911, would only be good for killing one or two soldiers before they killed him.

He heard movement, his hand fumbling to the gun at his waist, pulling it out just as the first form came into his view. He lowered his weapon instantly, seeing that white armband of a French Resistance member, his head dropping in relief.

One of them â?? a womanâ??s voice - said something in hurried French, and another woman rushed over to inspect his leg. He winced as her fingers lightly touched it. â??Damn!â? He forced out through grit teeth, hearing her murmur something back to the leader. They helped him to his feet, causing pain to stab through him, like someone had thrust a knife into him and twisted, but he tried to keep his mouth closed, not wanting to give away their position. He used his good leg to help them along as best he could.

As soon as they were underground, the manhole cover sealed overhead, he let out the ragged gasp of pain that he had been holding in, sucking in a deep breath of air. He didnâ??t care how bad it smelled down here, he pulled in breath after breath, looking down at the tattered leg of his flight suit. The olive fabric was dark with blood, his blood. His vision darkened slightly, and he soon found himself on a bed, the Resistance members standing around him.

â??Ehâ?¦Ethanâ?¦â? He murmured, looking at the leader. â??Harke.â? He added tiredly. He just wanted to close his eyes and sleep for a little bitâ?¦thatâ??s allâ?¦â?

Annabel looked at him and she touched his face and said "Ethan, listen to me, you've lost a lot of blood, you need to tell us your blood type" she said looking at him with a serious expression. Elise looked at the two men that were their to help. She looked at them and said "One of you go and get the morphine and anesthetic" she said to them.

Beau nodded and he hurried out of the room to the supply store. Anabel looked at him and said "I carn't take it out while he has no pain relief. He's already weak, the pain might kill him" she said. Elise nodded and said "Alright". Once he had told them his blood type Adrien left the room to get it as beau returned with the morphine. Anabel looked at him and she got the needle and injected into his leg. The pain should disappear.

Once the bloods were brought Elise got to work on putting the IV in him so he could get some blood back. She knew how to do a few things, but Annabel was the surgeon. "Hold him down" said Anabel. Elise, Beau and Adrien did as he asked.

"This might hurt a bit, even after the morphine Ethan" she said. She gripped the piece of shrapnel and pull on it, removing it from his leg.

Ethan blinked slowly, his eyes unfocused. It took him a few seconds to answer them. He felt coldâ?¦ â??Bloodâ?¦A positiveâ?¦â? He gasped, fumbling with his flight jacket, even though he shouldnâ??t be moving. He pulled out his dog tag, practically thrusting it into their hands. â??Dog tagsâ?¦â? He shivered, his thoughts slipping past him, only vaguely aware of the prick in his leg, and the spreading numbness that soon followed it.

Soon, a needle was in his arm, a jar of blood draining into him, keeping his heart beating. Hands held him down, and he was too weak to protest against it. But the lightning bolt of pain that tore through his stupor made him seize, his whole body straining as his mouth opened in a scream that lodged in his throat.

The pain was too much for him, and he passed out, going limp under their hands.

Annable put the piece of metal to the side, forgetting it for now. She frowned as he passed out, She checked his pulse. It was still beating, but slowly. At least he was alive. The worst part was over now. She moved back to his leg and began to clean the wound. She hoped the metal did not contain any elements of lead. He could be poisoned by it.

After cleaning and disinfecting the wound she began to stitch him back together. She got Elise to keep and eye on his pulse, make sure he didn't start crashing with out them noticing it. Elise did her job properly. Luckily his pulse remained steady, slow, but steady. The extra blood they were giving him was probably what was keeping him alive.

After about 2 hours Annabel's work was done. She suggested they move him to a cleaner by, this one was covered in dirt, grim and blood. The all gently picked him up and moved him across. Annabell looked a down at him and she hooked him up to a heart rate monitor. They hadn't had time to before.

Elise looked at them and said "I'll keep an eye one him, you guys go and get some rest, especially you annable" she said. They nodded and left the room. Annabel remained for a moment and said "Call me if anything happened to him" she said softly. Elise nodded and watched as she left the room.

Ethan didnâ??t stir for nearly two days, finally cracking his eyes open and staring at the ceiling with confusion. He wasnâ??t sure where he was or what had happened at first. He just knew that he wasnâ??t back in England. Had the Naziâ??s taken him? Was he a POW? Noâ?¦no. He rememberedâ?¦Resistance. French Resistanceâ?¦.he remembered the pain in his leg. At the remembrance of it, his leg started to throb horribly and he groaned, supporting himself with his elbows.

Looking down at his leg, he saw it was wrapped with a mass of bloody bandages, but thankfully, it was still attached to his body. The pain lanced all the way from his foot to partway into his stomach, but he was still alive. And damn hungry. His stomach growled fiercely from hunger and thirst, and he looked around the chamber he was in. There were a few other beds, some occupied, some empty. How had the Germans not found this place? It certainly seemed too large to hideâ?¦

â??Hello?â? He croaked, his voice shot from lack of speaking and water. He coughed to clear his throat before speaking again. â??Is anyone there?â?

Elise remained with him for the rest of the night, till some one came to relive her. She nodded and got up and headed to bed. Over the next few days she went about her duties, which was mainly telling other people what to. She kept track of their surplise, what they had, what they needed and what they had completely run out of. They would have to do a supply run soon.

2 days later as came back to check on their guest. She walked to the infirmary and saw him stirring, and even sit up a little. She was pleased he was awake. She walked over to him and poured him a glass of water and handed it to him. "Here" she said to him. She looked at his leg and said "Are you in pain?" she asked him. Obviously she had an accent on her English.

She looked at him and smiled and said "Your lucky we saw you go down, you would have been chopped to pieces otherwise...some body must be watching over you" she said.

Ethan looked over when he heard someone entering the room, and instantly assumed she was the leader. Her poise was to brazen and authorative to be anyone else. As she offered him a glass of water, he gratefully took it and drank it quickly, letting the cool â?? albeit bitter â?? tasting water flood his throat and fill his stomach somewhat. He coughed a few times to clear his airway, before looking back up at her. â??Thank you.â?

â??My leg feels like it got ripped in halfâ?¦â? He muttered, gracious he at least got rescued be someone who could speak English. â??But Iâ??m alive, at least.â? He nodded up to her. His eyes fell to her hips, where a German Luger sat in her holster. She must have killed a German officer to get one of thoseâ?¦ This woman had a fight in her.

â??What city is this?â? He asked, not knowing how far they might have carried him from the wreck.

Elise took the glass back when he drank the water. She put the empty glass on the beside table and she looked at him when he commented on his leg. She seemed to chuckle and said "It near did, but Annabel is a brilliant doctor, she stitched you back up, you should be back on your feet in a couple of weeks. For now, you need to rest, or at least, stay off that leg".

She looked at him when he asked her where he was. "We are still in Lille, but in the deserted part of town. No one ever comes here, side for a few drunken Germans". She looked at him and said "You must be hungry, I'll go get you some food" she said. With that she turned and left for the kitchen.

There she grabbed him some pieces of red meat and just simply tossed them in a fry pan for him. The man would need his iron levels to increase. She then put a few vegetables on the side, some bread and fruit, before she carried the tray back to him. She pulled the tabled towards him and said "Here, eat, get some of your strength back" she said to him.

Ethan propped himself up on his elbows, grunting at the throb of pain that jolted though his leg and stomach. â??Wellâ?¦thank youâ?¦thank herâ?¦for saving my leg.â? He said, grateful that he could still walk, maybe still fly if he got back to England before the end of the war, whenever that might be. â??Lilleâ?¦â? He muttered, trying to recall his maps and charts. He wasnâ??tâ?¦tooâ?¦far off from his flight path. If only he hadnâ??t gotten shot down, he would have been fine.

â??God, yes, Iâ??m starving.â? He blurted, having not eaten in the two days that he lay there in bed. When she arrived with the food, his mouth started to water. This was loads better than what they served back at base. He started to tear into the food, filling his empty stomach. Meat, vegetables, bread, fruitâ?¦this was a bigger meal than he had seen in weeks.

After a moment of chowing down, he slowed. â??Shit, I hope I didnâ??t just put a dent on your food.â? He said. He didnâ??t know how much these people had to eat, and he could potentially be eating enough for three people to split.

Elise watched as he began to devour the foo she had given him before he slowed down. She looked at him when he spoke and she shook her head. "No, it's alright, tomorrow we are going out on a supply run, it's fine. Come on, eat up, I want to see it all gone" she told him, like she was talking to a child or something. She seemed to grin and said "This is food stolen from the Germans themselves, they should watch out for it more no?" she said with a chuckle.

She then sat back down in her chair and sighed looking at the roof before she looked at his leg. "Annabel said that you'd be in bed for at least a week or two, I suppose once you well you'll be wanting to go back to the British" she said to him. She leaned back in the chair and said "If you do decide to go back, it will be difficult to get past the Germans without being seen" she said to him.
