It had been just shy of a year since Maya’s mother had been remarried. Her father had passed away from a sudden illness when Maya was still in middle school and it took her mother quite a bit of time before even considering getting back into the dating scene. The man she ended up marrying was nice and he had a son who was Maya’s age. The two had gotten along well enough that Maya truly did consider him her brother. By a stroke of luck, they attended the same college so they ran into each other a handful of times in the day but Maya always had a full schedule so she was always in a rush.
It was their final summer break before their senior year began and usually, Maya would spend the time getting her class schedule finalized and making sure she had all of her materials. As an English major it meant the sooner she could start on her assignments and papers the better off she would be in the end. But this was also the first summer they would be having together as one big family. Maya would have liked to spend her final college break with her friends at some beach, but seeing her mother's excitement at the prospect of them all spending time together convinced Maya to come home for break.
More often than not Maya preferred keeping to herself. She had a close circle of friends that she talked to often and she was always nice to people who approached her, but she wasn't the kind of girl who went out and partied on the weekend all the time. She had received quite a few offers to join sororities on campus but had turned them all down due to the reputations many of the sisters would have. She had earned herself a reputation around campus too, though hers was much more flattering than most. Maya was the girl on campus who would help anyone and everyone she could, she went out of her way to make others happy without expecting anything in return.
It was a Friday morning, the sun had only just finished rising for the day when Maya returned home. Early in the mornings before the sun was beginning to color the sky, Maya often went running, it was a bit of a daily ritual for her ever since she got into college since eating healthy wasn’t always an option. Maya took pride in her body, when she was younger she had always been on the heftier side and was even bullied as a child for her weight, but she turned things around by her sophomore year of high school. She had begun to work out with her mom and started to slim down a bit but by her freshman year of college, she had reached a healthy new standard for herself. Now at 21 Maya had grown into her curves appropriately for her five foot seven height.
Maya made sure to move through the house quietly, unsure if anyone else was awake yet or not, but not wanting to be the reason everyone got up. She took a quick shower to get the sweat off of her body before changing into her favorite pair of fitness shorts that hugged her hips just right and a loose-fitting tank top. Maya grabbed herself a book from her room before heading into the living room and sprawling out onto the couch, laying on her back with her legs hanging over one armrest while her head rested on the other as she began to read.
