Scarlett stood at the front door of the last place in the world she expected to be, smoothing out her short, summer blue dress with a tad bit of anxiety. The matching wedge heels she wore had a dainty strap around each ankle, attempting to make her look a bit older, though she wasn't sure if it succeeded. Her parents had already moved her furniture in while she was finishing up at school, so she knew most of her things would already be waiting for her when she got inside. No time like the present. She stuck her key in the slot and turned the handle, stepping inside.
This wasn’t exactly what she had in mind when she decided to move out. She had wanted to live in the dorms like everyone else, but her parents had thought it might distract her. That was impossible, of course, as Scarlett didn’t let things like partying or friends get in the way of her success, but this strange arrangement had been her only opportunity for freedom. It was live with Liam, or stay in the suffocating household she grew up in. The choice was obvious. Still, she hadn't exactly expected him to agree to it. In fact, she had been almost positive he would say no, considering they had never gotten along in the past. Yet there she was.
Scarlett took a moment to observe her new surroundings as she stepped into the living room. The apartment was nice, to his credit, if a bit cluttered. There was a TV set up with plenty of video game options, but it still gave an overall positive vibe. She pushed her falling glasses back up her nose as she hung her keys on the hook by the door, trying to make herself feel more at home. Really though, she just felt like she was breaking and entering, and it was a little uncomfortable. She had expected her new roommate to be waiting for her when she arrived, but he was no where to be seen.
“Hello?” she called, temporarily setting her bag down on the living room floor. Her plan was to basically ignore the man she’d known since childhood and was now living with, as she didn’t exactly have the fondest memories of him goofing around with her stupid brother. But she also knew Liam wasn’t the kid he’d been back then, so she wanted to give him at least a little bit of a chance. She knew, at the very least, she should properly thank him for giving her the chance to have her own life away from her family.
