ATLAS RHYS
When he thought about all the stories of Handsome Jack opening vaults, he didn’t recall stories about the horrible shit that went on after it. He thought they would just open it, and something useful would be there! They fought a giant Vault Guardian! They deserved something good. It had to be guarding something useful right? Why would it be guarding it if there was nothing there? Well, that was the rant that Rhys had to hear from Fiona when they finally got up there and there was nothing in it. Okay, so there was something in it, but it wasn’t impressive.

“It’s a rock,” Fiona stated flatly.

“…Well we don’t know—” Rhys started but then she started up again and he just stared at if for a long moment. It was about eight inches long from what he could tell, not overly big. Rounded. It just looked like a rock you could find out on Pandora. And so, after a moment, he leaned down, picking it up from inside the casing. Suddenly, the vault started shaking. He could hear her demanding to know what the hell he had done, but he clutched the rock tighter. Everything around him seemed to vibrate and distort. There was a blinding light and—then he was in the middle of nowhere.

He had spent hours calling for Fiona. Trying to find her. There was no signal. He couldn’t even try to call Vaughn if he tried, which made him wonder where he was if he wasn’t even in the satellite’s range. That was about…what, a week ago? He was tired. He was irritated. He wanted a really nice shower and to be back home in his crappy facility that he was still trying to get off the ground. And he still had that dumb rock. Still no idea what it was, or if it was useful, but he was keeping it. It was times like this though that he missed Jack. Missed having a voice talking to him even if it was sometimes degrading or aggravating.

To be fair, the AI would have probably been surprised he lasted a week without anyone.

To be fair, Rhys was also equally impressed. He stumbled upon towns here and there and had several close encounters with sneaking around and taking a few things he needed. But they were so far out in butt-fuck nowhere that they didn’t have any signal boosters that he could hack into.

He was also really, really tired of sand.

His jacket and the rock were shoved into a little satchel that he had managed to grab up off a body. His shirt sleeves were pushed up to his elbows. His hair was pushed back from sweat and he felt disgusting. Also, heeled boots were not useful for terrain like this and you would have thought he would have figured that out in his first adventure through the shit hole known as Pandora. There had been increased activity in the area though—he had seen bandits and people running around in cars through the dunes. All of which, Rhys tried to stay away from, staying near rocks and anything he could use as cover. His thought was that maybe he could steal one… but with his luck he wouldn’t be able to get it to run, but it was on the list of ‘things you could do to get out’. But if there were cars, they had to be going somewhere.

So, like an idiot, he followed along.

He had never been so happy to see a radio tower in his life. He could see the lights on at the top. He could see it blink here and there, and that gave him a sense of hope for the first time in days. The hordes of bandits? Not so much. It was only when it got dark that he dared to make his way from the rocks he had been hanging around, trying to get in range of the tower. Just close enough that he could hopefully get some sort of message off. A GPS location. Something. So he hunkered down behind some crappy put together shack, bringing up his palm display and connecting to the tower, all while trying to keep a look out for anyone coming around that could, well, you know. Kill him. He breathed a sigh of relief when it connected and he started to try to load anything—any messaging systems that he could send out. The calls wouldn’t go through, but he did manage to ping his location to various devices along Atlas, and his contact list. He didn’t know what anyone was doing. If it would get through to them. Sasha. Vaughn. Athena. Janey. Zer0. It had to go through to someone right? There was a crash somewhere in the distance and he heard bandits yelling at one another, causing him to sink down against the shack more. …Yeah, he really hoped it would.
