It had started the day Alorai had arrived, students were suspicious and that included Phoebe herself, she knew that Clemia was a large academy, there were different students with different expertise and talents when it came to magic. Phoebe knew that her own magic power surpassed some students and other students were leagues above her, but the new girl couldn't even achieve the minimum when it came to spells. At first they assumed it was joke, maybe she was simply pretending to be inept and like a magician with a card hidden up their sleeve she would prove she was actually quite the accomplished witch, which no one in the class would find amusing considering the academy was meant to train witches, magicians were just con artists pretending to have magic. Whispers among the students began to circle, how did she even pass the test in get in? Phoebe knew that if she made that many mistakes Clemia wouldn't have accepted her, it would have been over and she would be given no second chances.
Rumors began to pile up and it reached a point where some students decided they'd play detective and learn a little more about Alorai. At first all they managed to learn was the blonde was in fact rich, which didn't really seem like any kind of conclusive evidence, it was like saying water was wet and air was necessary in order to breathe, the blonde did look like the posh rich type. Yet that fact played a bigger role to how she got in than Phoebe could have expected, no one got any real dirt until one of classmates told her and some other students to group together because she had some juicy details about Ms. Moneybags, turned out she didn't have to take a test at all, she paid to get in by her family. At Phoebe thought that was silly, telling her classmate to stop being stupid, this was a school meant for learning magic, something a person was born with or without, magic couldn't be mastered the same way regular academics could by studying over and over.
Despite wanting to tell her classmate to stop being an idiot, there wasn't much confidence when denying the claims either, everything had fit together too well for it to be a coincidence, watching Alorai slip up in class again only continued to make the possibility seem more and more plausible. Phoebe had spent the rest of the day trying to come up with a reason, a way, a possibility as how that rich screw up managed to get into Clemia, but it only made the idea that the academy that she both admired and respected had participated in unethical practices, they took a bribe and accepted someone with no magical talent into the school. Phoebe herself felt like she had barely been accepted and she pretty much had to sink her nails into the floor and claw her way in little by little, a mindset that had felt rewarding when she had accomplished getting, but now pointless seeing how Clemia only needed a big bag of money to lower their standards significantly.
After her respect and admiration for the academy was in pieces Phoebe felt like the best thing to do was hang up her robe and leave, but a part of her had hesitated in doing so, unethical or not it was still considered one of the best places to learn magic, if not the only place to do so properly considering how far back the roots went. What would it change in the end? Alorai would still be going to class and considering how tight of a grip the rich girls family now had on Clemia, she would probably graduate eventually as well, all that without having to do any real work. Well if Clemia was willing to give someone who didn't deserve it an easy ride, Phoebe decided that she would handle it herself, after all the academy was meant to be tough on its students.
When class had ended, Phoebe turned away from her usual paths which was either towards the cafeteria or library, either wanting to read, draw, or have a snack. There was only one priority and that was Alorai, as the number students began to thin, Phoebe began to pick the pace of her walking until she was right beside the other blonde when it was only the two of them. "Hey rich girl, I know we don't usually talk but I was hoping you could do a favor for me." As Phoebe spoke she moved close enough to where Alorai was within arms reach, lifting up one and placing it around the other girls shoulders. "I really want to become a member of staff when I graduate, so I was wondering if you could pay off Clemia to let me be a part of it."
