With all the threats around every corner it is best to keep hair short and not give anyone, or anything, something to grab onto. Yet despite the dangers her thick strands pose, she cannot seem to cut them. When Sofia was young her mother would spend time before bed brushing the tangles free. The feel of the bristles against her scalp was incredibly soothing and the action was often accompanied by her motherโ€™s gentle humming. When her hair was thoroughly brushed, her mother would continue the routine by braiding it into a french braid. She would always comment how beautiful Sofiaโ€™s hair was and so when her mother passed, she swore she would never cut it short. It also brings some form of comfort when she catches a glimpse of her reflection and she can see the similarities she shares with her mother.

Only one other person knows this and it is a secret she intends to take to the grave. Her parents were the first few to fall victim to the plants they created and it was some time after their death that Sofia searched their belongings. Journals, diagrams, and notes filled with information about the plants and their mutations were at her fingertips. She studied them for years, adding to them when the plants began to mutate and categorizing them when new species were encountered. While she may know quite a bit, she is not an expert and knows even less about the mutation in animals.

    • Sofia was born to the college sweethearts, Lily and Mason Lorenzen. Though they married young, their research demanded their full attention and so it wasnโ€™t until they were in their late thirties that they welcomed their one and only bundle of joy. Despite being an only child, Sofia never had the chance to feel lonely. Her parents raised her in a strict and mostly sterile environment until things started become to quite chaotic in the world. As a child, Sofia remembered the cautions everyone took due to plant life changing the environment. Gone were the days her parents spoke fondly of when they were able to ride their bikes for hours without a worry in the world. Now hands needed to be held a majority of the time and every child played under careful eyes of adults.

      The laboratory her parents worked housed an onsite child care facility where Sofia spent most of her days under the care of Ms. Claudia and her son, Dex. The two were fast friends and spent most of their time playing together in the max security grounds. Though they were aware of the dangers at the time, they didnโ€™t realize just how serious the problem became. It wasnโ€™t until a few years later that a fungus had mutated and began to emit a poisonous odor that the danger became a quick reality. During a game of hide and seek the alarms blared and a voice spoke out on the intercom, alerting everyone to the specific drill that needed to be performed. Without thinking of her own safety, Ms. Claudia ushered the children to the exit before returning back for the those who eventually came out of hiding.

      By the time Ms. Claudia and the others made it to the exit, the poison and worked its way into their system and hours later they were dead. The first case of poison gas was recorded and revealed to the world. It wasnโ€™t until later that evening that Sofia learned the fate of her own parents as well. A deep mourning period consumed Dex and Sofia, bonding them together through pain and loneliness. Without any other family to claim the young girl, Sofia moved in with Mr. Matthias and Dex, forming their own makeshift family. For years, it was just the two while Mr. Matthias continued his head of security job.

      As time passed and the world went to hell, Dex and Sofia found themselves traveling further and further in search for supplies. After a recent brush with death via Captcidum, only saved with quick thinking from Dex, did they come home to discover bandits had raided their town and left many good people dead in their wake. It wasnโ€™t until they stumbled along the back alley of their crumbling home did they discover Mr. Matthias had departed from the living. With heavy hearts, they buried their last parental figure. Sofia realized, after the constant death they encountered all around, that a part of her was becoming desensitized to such finalities. What devastated her years prior now only left a little tug on her heart and feelings of melancholy.

      By the time that his grave was marked, the two made a pack to survive. As it became more and more dangerous to travel, Sofia remained in their bunker like home, reading the journals and findings from her late parents. Studying their work became a ritual for her while Dex honed his body in strength and skill. Each time they ventured out for resources, Sofia began to notice the plants to avoid and signs of danger much faster than before. When met with a new specimen, she commited it to memory to draw in her own journal later. It was through her research and desire to learn more that she held onto hope for the future. If she could help pave the way for a brilliant mind, she would continue her activities until a way of balance was once again brought to the world.

      It wasnโ€™t until recently that a rumor began around their small town, a rumor of a place in the west that had managed to create a safe haven for humans to live. One that promised safety from mother nature and her need for vengeance. Word got around that a group was forming to head to this safe place and Sofia immediately jumped at the opportunity. Though the travels were dangerous, it would be worth it if she could live long enough to help get her parentโ€™s research along with her own, into capable hands.

Background:
Lucille Wilder grew up with a rougher crowd. The people she called family were a nomadic group who'd risk it all to travel through the jungles of the Southern States of America. Finding unsuspecting settlements and rob them blind, leave them for dead, and force whatever malleable youth useful enough to join their gang. Violence, Thievery, and anything that could numb the mind whether it was moonshine or whatever toxin that didn't immediately killed you was common place in this marauding group.

But one day it all caught up with her... A raiding gone wrong had left her near death if it weren't for the good people of the very same settlement she had targeted. After a long and painful recovery it was time for the people to decide what to do with her. Let her go, back to the raiders with fear that they might return to try again? Keep her prisoner? Kill her? Her crimes were great but their mercy greater.

The settlement decided to give her a chance to do her part within the community, and if she respected their laws then she was welcome to stay and live among them. A settlement with a small farm, clean water, and safety behind walls. She stayed...but the people never forget who she is and make sure she remembers too. Now there are rumors about a place in the desert offering sanctuary to anyone brave enough to take the journey.

Lucille herself isn't hopeful of the future but something tells her she won't have much choice in the matter as she feels like she's overstaying her welcome in this community.

From the time that Dex could remember, he had always been with Sofia and couldn't imagine his life without her. The last promise that he had made to his dying father was to look after and protect the young woman whose family had given all they could to help Dex's parents adjust to their life as immigrants. The pair had always been inseparable and Dex saw no reason to leave the younger woman to try and fend for herself, so they agreed on a pact.

Sofia did her best to learn about the quickly changing world around them, finding ways for them to adapt and thrive together. Meanwhile, Dex would venture out of whatever served as their current home in search for supplies, tools, anything that could possibly help them to survive. With risking his neck out on his own, Dex would often find himself on the run from anything and everything that threatened him and he'd lean on Sofia to help patch him up every time.

When he first heard about the rumor, there was a big part of him that brushed it off as fake and he was comfortable with living out the rest of his days with Sofia. But as rations and supplies became harder to come by, the risk quickly became worth the potential reward.

Background:
Life was good for the wealthy Orfeo family with life on a boat until they discovered that not even the water could save them from the changes of mother nature. When discovered that the coastlines were also infected with mutated spores, and the farming facilities and similar were being affected, it didn't matter anymore that they had wealth. They couldn't buy their way out of danger anymore, nor could they buy the supplies and tools necessary for survival without putting in any effort whatsoever.

They too fell to the struggles of adapting to a new world. Disease, crime, famine, and more. One by one the Orfeo family died out until just the young teen Lorenzo remained. The young teenager struggled living on his own but did his part at trying to maintain the makeshift water-cities made from a collection of boats and walking boards for as long as they could until the people were forced to abandon them. But nature wasn't what drove young Lorenzo away from the coast. It was an accusation to a series of murders. Although the people were never able to prove it the message was clear. He was no longer welcome and thus left.

Roaming from settlement to settlement, offering his skills as a medic that he has picked up along the way he continued to survive and explore the new world. His latest stop in his journey is the same settlement that housed the former marauder Lucille Wilder, whom he actually saved her life when treating a stab wound to the gut. He and the woman have been staying with this settlement for the past year now and his desire for adventure is beckoning again.

Rumors have been spreading for a while now about a haven to the west, even people from outside the settlement have come to visit upon hearing word of a group being set up to verify if such a place exists.

Background:
For almost a century, there was plans to compensate for the rising levels of the seas and oceans. All over the world, creative minds, architects and engineers worked on the future. Still, there was just few prototypes before the climate change really became a reality. With water covering almost three quarters of the planet's surface - and just as polluted as the other quarter - it was not the first time that humans lived on the water. Also, building new architecture and whole cities had a cost. A cost, that needed to be paid in money (but people finally realized that money was on the way of the dodo), resources (even the newest material had to be made from something), and time. Time was something that they had less and less.

With wars breaking out all over the globe the rising levels of the sea flooding and making people homeless, and the climate getting worse, only a few places remained where humanity could and did built their new cities on the water - and under the water. This did not meant that people all over the globe did not tried to survive in their own ways.

But the new cities had finally became a reality. People with money, knowledge, or just the right skills found their places onboard, there being a hope when the so-called apocalypse happened. Yes. They was safe... for a while... But these new water cities was also 'green'. It just took time before the pollens and birds found their way to the artificial floating islands. The ones closer to the shores or in a fixed point fallen around the same time as the islands - the few old ones still abowe sea level and the new ones too.

But there is always an exception. Floating cities with biodomes, or their greenhouses under the water still stay and flourish as safe havens. They are just overpopulated, have to fight off pirates and mutated animals, have to be on the watch for their plants mutating... But as in any wars, science and technology tried to keep up. And people started to find ways to get changed to this new situation. The old ones had no chance. The grown ups had problems adapting. But the children... or more than that, the future children had a chance. A rapidly growing chance.

For the past twenty-ish years, a new race was starting to born. Calling themselves the Merpeople, or Merman and Mermaids, it was a kind of hype to try to live in the water. Using equipments and biotechnology, of course, for they was not that different from other races of humanity. For now.

Personal background:
Born to parents that could be considered new hippies, XX grown up with two constants in her life. Water and Science. Spending her childhood with not only able to experiment herself, but being the experiment too... Reaching adulthood also meant she reached a point in her life when she had to choose. Getting adapted to sea life fully (with changes being made to her body and even genetics) or to live her life only dreaming about living full time in - and under - water.

Of course a great and scientific mind like hers had to have all variables to make a choice like this. And that meant she needed experience. Already having experience with underwater and on sea life, she just needed the other side of the equation. And that meant joining a longer expedition to the 'jungles and deserts'. XX and the group took their time to get ready, and finally left the city on an amphibious flying machine. Four scientist and three outriders for security and skills with the right equipment... They survived for a while.
