Captain Stephen Walker had been in the air force for nearly a decade now. His father flew fighter planes in The first World War. He was quite good good enough to get his son a job doing the same thing once he was old enough. What Stephen excelled at was high risk flying and evasive maneuvers. His favorite thing to do was fly under bridges to lose chase panes, so far he had only crashed once. He spent 8 months on the ground healing after that incident and got his wings taken from him.

As war broke out in Europe he saw this as his chance to get back in the air. He volunteered to be one of the first American pilots to fly recon over the Western European theater. He had been working there six months flying spy planes over the French coast. Today was the first day his British superiors offered him a mission. They kind of mission you get medals for, well the kind your family gets medals for anyways.

He would be flying unescorted into eastern France several hundred miles into enemy territory in a plane larger then he was used to flying armed only with a camera and a small arms. He accepted with out hesitation he felt bad for the French people and wanted to do anything that would help. He was near the French border with Germany when he came under heavy fire from German AA guns. His plane was mortally wounded and he took a round threw his thigh. He rigged the plane to fly in a straight line back into France and rigged it to blow.

Once he the plane was rigged he jumped waiting until he was low to the ground to pull the his parashoot. He had waited to long and came in to hard his screams of pain where masked by explosion of the plan far above. He had broken his arm when he landed. He moved quickly gathering up his shoot and his jump gear his arm danging a bit and stuffed it into a bush and began to walk away.

He had his colt in his hand as he limped along lost in France behind enemy lines wounded, injured, unable to ask for help, hell he could barely tell German from French. He limped along careful not to leave a large trail but the going was very very slow. His vision was fading in and out from the pain and the blood loss, he was praying under his breath he did not think he would live threw the night.

"C'est un avion d'alliés"
"Que??!"
"Pourquoi vole-t-il si bas?"
"Les Bâtards, Ils le frappent! Il descend!"

The sounds of the crash and explosion echoed around the city. The German batteries fell silent, however it would not take long for city to be full off Germans looking for the plane and it's aviator...so would the freedom fighters, the Free France Forces. It did not take long for the news to reach the ears of Elise Rousseau, the captain, leader, whatever you wanted to call it, of the base here.

"Letâ??s go pick him up before the Germans find the poor bastard". She stood up from where she had been sitting and she and about 10 or so other freedom fighters walked to the basement where they stored their weaponry. They quickly armed themselves with MAS-36 rifles. Annabelle, their doctor and surgeon brought a medical kit as she always did. They headed out in the night; they knew the city like the backs of their hands. The Germans however did not. They did not know about the sewer passages ways that the freedom fighters used when the city was too hot.

Elise lead the group through the sewers, she had the blue prints in her hands as they walked. She then stopped and said "This is about it, letâ??s get out of here" he said climbing up the ladder and pushing up the lid of the pot hole and climbed out. Sure enough, about a hundred meters away was the wreck of the plane. She gestured for the rest to come quickly as she walked forward. The rest followed. She estimated it would be a good 10 minutes or so before the Germans found the wreck; they would have to move quickly.

It did not take them long to find the British pilot. The white armband they wore with the cross of Lorraine would tell him who they were and what they belonged to. She called Annabelle and she rushed past with her medical bag and looked at his wound in his leg and his broken arm.. She shook her head and said "La blessure est mauvaise." in a grim voice.

Elise nodded and gestured to a few of the other members that had come to support him as they walked. She led them back to the pot hole as they walked. They lowers him inside gently before they rest of them files inside, Elise last closing the pot hole as she lowered her self. They walked back, but much slower this time, considering their present company, they spoke only to each other in French. They did not know if he could be trusted yet.

Elise was stood tall as she lead the way back. She looked strong and fierce. Her blond hair was put up into a bun and on top she wore a cap, also marked with the cross of Lorraine. Her green eyes looked forward as she walked forward. She was dressed simply, a brown sweater and long black woolen over coat. She also wore a pair of darker brown pants, also of wool for warmth and black boots. On her back was the rifle. She also wore a belt with a hand gun and a knife, should her adversary get a little too close for comfort. The rest of them were dressed much in the same way.

The sewer led right to the basement of their main base of operations. They climbed out and Annabelle rushed to the operating room, the British man being carried behind her. The other members watched as they walked past them. Elise and the others deposited their weapons back to the basement and Elise walked into the operating room after Elise. He had been placed on a bed. The two men, Beau and Adrien remained as Annabelle got to work quickly. "Whatâ??s your name?" she asked him in English for the first time as she put on her white plastic gloves. She grabbed some scissors and cut away the part of his pants that were obstructing her view of the wound. Elise looked down at him and said "Don't pass out. We didn't bring you all the way here just to have you die on us" she said looking at him. Both the girls spoke with a heavy accent as expected.

He heard them coming and tried to hide but they where to fast for him. He tried to raise his pistol but he could not lift it, it felt like he was trying to lift a cannon. He never let go of his equipment his jump kit had everything he would need to survive on his own. He cursed loudly and repeatedly when they took his weapons but he could not fight. He loved that carbine and his pistol the very same one his father carried at the end of the war. "You lose that pistol i will kill you!"

He groaned the anger of losing his weapons and being capture upset him. He knew they where not German but he did not know what the cross on there arm's meant. He closed his eyes as they drug him threw the sewer the pain was over whelming. "Who are you? Where are you taking me?!" He protested being drug away but he stopped fighting when the doctor began working on him.

"Do you have any brandy if your going to torture me?" He groaned loudly as he struggled to stay awake trying to figure out what is happening. He took a deep breath and screamed loudly as she set his arm. Brandy or not that hurt a lot even with morphine that would kill. "In my back pack there are 4 shots of morphine and some bandages. Please give me 2!" He groaned loudly as the doctor worked slowly.

Elise looked at him and shook her head. "Wear not here to torture you, where here to patch you up. We are the Free France Forces, Rebels, Now sit still, you've lost a lot of blood" she said to him sternly.

Annable was still working on him whilst Elise spoke to him, She unzipped his flight jacket and unbuttoned his shirt. Finding his dog tags she read off his blood type. She told Adrien to go get the blood they needed for him. Elise opened his bag and pulled out the shots or morphine he had. Doing as he asked, she gave him two.

Annable then gently took off his jacket and shirt. She looked at his arm. "Your arm is badly broken...I will have to put a cast on it, but that will come later...Right now I'm going to take the bullet out of your leg". She told him

Adrien returned with the bloods and Annabel quickly put a drip in him. That would keep him alive. Annabel then move to his leg. "This may still hurt a bit" she told him. Using a clamp she pulled the lodged bullet out. Luckily it wasn't lodged in their. That would have have meant her cutting it out. Of course the second she pulled it, it began to bleed. She had to work fast. She began to stitch him back up, closing the wound. She then cleaned the stitched with a wet clothe and bandaged the wound.

Annabel looked at his arm. She would have to re-align his bone. She moved over to his arm and gently squeezed, trying to locate the break, or breaks. After having found it she looked at him and said "This also may hurt". She began to push his bones back together. Once she had re-aligned them, they quickly put his arm in a split and in a sling.

The morphine did little to dull the sharp pains of surgery he groaned and writhed lightly as she pulled the bullet out. He had been wounded before but had always been asleep when they fixed him. He remained mostly quite threw the surgery on his leg nothing more the groans and winces. When she set his arm he screamed yelling in pain and jerked in pain but did not move his arm away. When she put it in a sling he laid back in closing his eyes trying to forget the pain.

"Thank... Thank you. " He groaned trying to fight off sleep taking a deep breath. " You are not with the Germans? Your not with the British? Who do you fight for?" He spoke softly he had not heard of the French Liberation he had never been on the ground in France. He fought during the day then slept in his own bed at night this whole experience was terrifying.

"Can i stand doctor? Will it make my leg worse? " He groaned the morphine had drove away the majority of the pain it was little more then a throb in his leg. Though his arm still felt terrible and bothered him intensely. He moved slowly to sit up facing the woman who had been giving him orders. "What do you plan to do with me? "

Elise looked at him. Of course he would still be very much confused. He asked who they fought for. "We fight for our selves. We fight to regain the homes we lost. We fight to avenge our dead families. We fight for our freedom" she told him.

"You are aware that France has been taken by Germany, yes? Well, we are what you would, if in their place, rebels. We do our best to sabotage them, kill them, rob them, anything to hurt them. The blood we are giving to you was stolen from one of their supply cars. Rather you have it then some other German bastard, no?" she said.

Annabell looked at him and said "You need to wait for the wound to heal a bit more before you can stand on your own. You need to rest" she told him.

Elise blinked a little when he asked what she planned to do with him. She shrugged and said "I plan to do nothing. Once you heal, you can leave if you want, try to return to your own people, though I would advise against it, unless you have a death wish. You can stay here if you want, if you put your work in we'll feed you, give you a bed, medical care if you get sick. Once the war is over, if your still alive, you could go back to your own home" she said with a shrug.

She then looked at him and said "Right now, you need to sleep, Annabel will give you a shot to make you drowsy, as long as you don't fight it, you'll be asleep in no time"

Second later he would feel a needle being injected into his good arm.

"I want my weapons! The pistol is an heirloom my father carried that pistol when he flew over this country in the last war! The carbine is mine i would also like that back. Take the bullets if you wish bot those are my weapons. " He shook his head trying to fight off his sleep his mind racing as to what he was going to do.

He had been shot down deep in France he could not make the thousand or so miles back to the coast. Not to mention he had to cross the channel he was stuck here. "If you have use for a pilot i will ... i will help." He closed his eyes and laid down slowly he did not need to fall from this table and re-injure himself.

He closed is eyes slowly again asking for his fathers pistol it was the last thing he could think before the injection took over him. He slept deeply though it was not soundly his mind went back over the crash and being shot down again. His mind imagined what his father would say about him jumping from his plane feeling ashamed that he could not land it feeling worse that he had failed.

Stephen would wake late in the afternoon the next day. When he did, he would find his weapons sitting on the beside table next to him. While he had been asleep, they had moved him somewhere cleaner and more comfortable with a fresh set of clothes, just plain bed clothes, but they imagines they were more comfortable than his uniform.

Elise has stayed with him through the night, telling Anabelle to rest. If something were to happen, Elise would handle it. Anabelle, left with Adrien, both holding hands gently. Elise saw him wake up and said "good you awake, are you hungry? Thirsty?" she asked him.

He groaned as he pushed himself to set up on the edge of the bed rubbing his throat with noninjured hand. "Please, I am very thirsty and could use some food. " He groaned as he reached over into his uniform taking another shot of morphine out putting it in his leg. Within seconds he let out a content sigh as the pain went away. Slowly he pushed himself to his feet seeing his pants where shredded he sighed. "Can i get a pair of pants to please? The rest of my uniform will be fine preferably some blue or black pants if you have them."

With great care he put his shirt back on clearly he had broken his arm before he was rather good at slipping it on with the cast and on. Once the shirt was on how ever he left it unbuttoned he figured with the night shirt on under it he would be fine. Slowly he picked up his shoulder holster slipping it on letting it hang lose as he could not tighten it down with just his right hand. He was so happy to have his fathers pistol back he did not care if it was empty or not. He glanced back as he pressed the slide against the bed post looking into the chamber to see if it was loaded.

Elise nodded and said "I'll get you some, I'll be back in a moment" she said getting up and walking out of the room. She walked into the kitchen. There she grabbed him some pieces of red meat and just simply tossed them in a fry pan for him. The man would need his iron levels to increase. She then put a few vegetables on the side, some bread and fruit, before she carried the tray back to him. She pulled the tabled towards him and said "Here, eat, get some of your strength back" she said to him.

She poured him a glass of water from the jug on the side and handed him the pants that he wanted. If he looked in the chambers of his pistol he would find that they remained loaded. Elise did not trust him yet, she just believed that a man in his position would not be stupid enough to shoot those looking after him. Besides, she was armed herself. A German Luger sat in a holster on her hips, taken from a German she'd killed herself.

Once he slipped his pistol into its holster smiling taking a deep breath as he sat down. "I honestly don't know what good ill be to your resistance... I am trained to hide not to fight. I am a pilot they don't teach us how to fight in a war. " He took a large drink nearly downing half a glass of the water before he sat down and began to eat.

He ate slowly struggling with the meat to cut it with just one hand. It took him nearly a half hour but he was able to clean his plate. Normally he would not eat so much but he was not about to have them waist there food not when she was taking such good care of him. "I will help you while i can if you will have me but if i get a chance to head back... I need to get into the air where i can do your people some real good. "

He smiled struggling a bit to put on his pants getting them on he looked at her with a sad look on his face he hated having to do this. He had barely met this woman and he needed to ask her for more help. "Can you help me with my belt holster and shirt? " He said speaking softly a bit embarrassed he could not do it himself.

Elise looked at him and watched as he ate. He was a pilot, she understood that he would not be trained in fighting on the ground. She looked at him and chuckled and said "I'm sorry, but wear a bit short on airplanes...The only want to get something like that would be to steal it from the Germans them seleves, that would be almost...suicide. If you want we could teach how to fight...I used to be a shop girl, look at me now, everyone can learn...but then again, hiding could also be useful, after all, we carn't let the Germans find us now, can we". she said.

Elise watched as he put on his pants. She nodded when he asked for help and she smiled a little and said "Sure, it's no problem". She did up his pants for him and tightened his belt. She then button up his shirt and said "There we are".

"Thank you miss! I owe your people a great thanks. I am just grateful some of you speak English. " He smiled looking into her eyes as he tightened his shoulder holster and walked over grabbing his flight jacket slipping it on buttoning it so the empty arm would be held to his body. " Well if your willing to deal with a grounded fly boy then all i have to say is. Captain Stephen Walker reporting for duty Madam!" He snapped to attention and soluted clearly not a British solute.

He started laughing as he turned and grabbed the carbine laying next to his bed. It was light enough to shoot it with one arm if he had a place to balance it. He smiled turning to the door shouldering the strap for it as he limped to the door. "I cant help but laugh madam an American soldier from Chicago serving in the British Royal Air Corps. now fighting with the French resistance. "

Elise luaghed at him as he snapped to attention. "You don't have to call me Madam, My name is Elise Rousseau". She watched as he got up. She sighed, Annabelle probably would not approve of him walking right now.

She stood up and said "Wait a minute". Opening a near by closet she found a pair of crutches, well he could only use one right now. She took one out and put it under neath his good arm. "That should help you a bit, would you like me to show you around?"

He smiled as she gave him the crutch in a way that forced him to use it. "Now how am i going to impress the legendary women of France walking around on this? " He chuckled giving her a playful wink his cocky pilot attitude showing itself a bit in the way he carried himself. He knew he needed the crutch but he did not really want to use it.

"I would love a tour as long as it gets me out of this room. I tend to be a get a bit uncomfortable when i am grounded and stuck in small rooms for long periods of time. You can take the sailor away from the sea but you cant take the sea away from the sailor so they say. " He smiled giving her another playful wink as he opened the door and held it for her using the crutch under protest.

Elise looked at him. She thought it was a bit silly that he was refusing to use the crutch properly, it would only make his wound worse. She chuckled a little when he winked at her. She walked out of the door and said "This way"

She turned to the left and soon they seemed to be in the living room of the house. A few people were sitting on one couches and sofas. She looked at him and said "The living room obviously". Adrien and Beau were sitting on one couch with Annabell and Dominic on the other. Annabelle looked up and jump to her feet.

"AYAH! Why is he walking so soon!" she said rushing over.

Elise held her hands up "I couldn't stop him"

Annabell looked up at him with a frown. "You want to loose your leg?" she asked with a heavy accent.

Elise pulled her away and said "Annabell, v aux pas soucis, He will be fine"

Annabelle seem to shoot her a frown before she said "Fine".

Elise smiled and said "This way". She walked back down the hall and turned again into the kitchen.

"This is the kitchen, Eliza is our cook most of the time, seems she's not hear right now. They past a few closed doors. "Storage" she explained.

The came to a trap door in the ground. "Where we keep our weapons, ammunition, all of that"

They continued walking and she said "Over there is the doctors surgery"

She then stopped and said "I would show upstairs but I do not think you can get up there" she said with a chuckle

"The bedrooms are upstairs, till you get you leg healed, you'll have to sleep down here" she said.

He smiled when he walked into the room nodding to everyone. "I would salute you all but your beautiful doctor had made that hazardous to my health with this cast. " He smiled continuing to be his rather cocky self. Once the reached the end of the tour he smiled looking at her giving her another playful wink and a coy smile. "So your telling me you can not show me your sleeping quarters. " He chuckled loving the double meaning in his words hoping she would not take offense to his flirting.

"Well that is fantastic it means i will have privacy if i need it. " He chuckled and smiled at her giving her yet another wink clearly he was flirt and he had no intention of changing that fact. "If you have .30 caliber and .45 caliber rounds i will need those. If not... I will just carry these until 2 boxes of ammo i jumped with run dry. He turned to walk back to the living room before stopping not far away turning to face her. " I have 2 things to ask of you before i join your forces. "

He looked into her eyes for the first time showing any seriousness since he had woken up from his drug induced sleep. "Please forgive my advances my father was a pilot and he taught me... Men like me don't get second chances often when our plane breaks up in mid air... we usually don't make it down alive that's why we live like we do. We fight hard and we live every day as best we can cause every time planes take the air less come back then went out. Second... Teach me french it is rather frustrating not knowing what your saying. "

Elise heard his remark about her sleeping quarters. She looked at him and said "Sadly, no and we should have the bullets you need" she said chuckling.

She looked at him when he stopped her. She nodded and said "Well lie how want, but a piece of advice, I would not make advances on Annabelle....Adrien....is erm...protective...and since you going to have nothing to do for awhile, there will be plenty of time to teach you. Oh and by the way, all of the houses in this street have resistance members in them. Every week, the "leaders" as you would put it, meet in one of them to disscuss issues. We have about 15 people living in this house. ts well off owners however were lost in the invasion" she told him.

"Thank you for your warning I shall avoid flirting with her until I am strong enough to defend myself. Until then i suppose there is only one woman i shall make advances on. " He smiled giving her another wink before moving back threw the halls to the living room. He smiled leaning heavily on the crutch causing it to bow a bit as he took all his weight off his wounded leg.

"I figured since Elise wanted to keep me to herself and neglected to introduce me i would introduce myself. I am Captain Stephen Walker of the US Air Force and the British Royal Air Corps." He smiled looking at everyone giving them a smiled before turning to Elise. "And what is this organization called since I am going to be a part of this as well?"

Elise rolled her eyes when he said she had wanted to keep him to her self. Elise answered his question and said "We are that Free France Forces" she told him.

Annabelle stood up again and said "yes , yes, welcome, now go lay down" she she told him with a frown. her arms were crossed and when he seemed to do nothing she raised and eyebrow and said "Do you want me to make you", a glimmer in her eye told him that it would probably be best to listen to her right now.

Stephen smiled and winked at her as she told him to go to bed before looking at the man he assumed be Adrien. "Oh my dear Annabelle if Elise had not warned me about this fine gentleman here I would take you up on that threat. Though considering i can either shoot or stand at the moment i will avoid the fight and head to bed. That is if you will accompany me Elise. " He smirked turning to face her giving her a playfully smile.

"You do have a good deal you need to teach me before i am able to work with your team here. " He smiled hobbling his way over towards his room and fighting to open the door with one hand. Once he finally got it open he hopped threw and held it looking to Elise hoping she would join him or this room would become a prison quickly.

Elise almost chocked after his next comment. As he turned to leave, Annabelle loud voice would be heard as she called him ungrateful and various other tings in french and Adrien was left to calm her down.

Once when he held the door open for her she walked through and muttered to him quietly "Your lucky she didn't slap you" she said.

"I have not been slapped by a woman in 5 days. That is assuming that the injection she gave me only knocked me out for a few hours. " He chuckled softly closing the door behind her and limping over to the bed leaving his crutch near the door. Once he had laid down he groaned realizing he still had his coat pistol and uniform on.

"I almost would have welcomed it i would feel more at home if she had slapped me. I am still in bit of disbelief that i am in France. " He closed his eyes shaking his head mumbling softly to himself not thinking she could hear him but the morphine had hindered his awareness and he was talking normally. "112 ... You made it 112 and i could not even make it 30. " The shame he felt showing in the tone of his voice.

Elise looked at him and chuckled when she said he wished he had slapped him. Elise sat down in a chair across from him. She heard his mumblings and she looked at him and said "What do you mean 112?" she asked him, rather confused.

She looked at him and said "Are you okay?"

"My pride will never recover i am afraid. " He pulled the pistol out of its holster reaching over handing it to her the wooden handled covered in x's and lines. "Each line on the safety side is a mission my father flew in the first war. Most over France and Germany. Each x is a confirmed kill 43 a 8 time ace. On the other side is my record 29 missions 4 kills. "

He sighed glancing over at her taking a deep breath before closing his eyes again. "My father was an amazing pilot. He never once flew a non combat mission and never once was shot down. 25 of my missions where recon missions and I got shot down. " He groaned in anger with himself taking deep breath. "How angry was she truly? "
