Office Romances don't work...do they? (Nightstalker x Candi)

"Mind reader," she said with a little chuckle. "Well, I'll go inside and do that. I guess I'll see you tomorrow then. It was nice to see you again, Chris. I'll see you around," Claire said with a smile. Then she got up and went inside to buy her cake and eat it in her office as he had suggested.

Chris grinned and chuckled a little at her words, watching her order the cake and leave back for her office. Leaving some extra money for the waitress he strode down the street, making several small purchases before driving home. Once there he glanced at his wardrobe for tomorrow and pulled out his other pin striped suit, a tie that he had not worn in a few months as well.

The rest of the day was relatively uneventful for Claire. She came back to the office and ate her cake while reading through her manuscripts. It had been nice to see Chris in a more relaxed environment. She could hardly wait to see him at work. She sent her notes and the manuscripts back to the authors via messenger and gave her final approval on a few other projects before deciding to come home. Her apartment was fairly large, a big living room with a dine-in kitchen and a large bedroom with a master bath. In the hall, there was also a guest bath. The place was painted in soothing earth tones and decorated with rich, warm colors and comfortable contemporary furniture. There were paper lanterns hanging from her ceiling and in her doorways adding an extra texture of light to everything, as well as regular lamps and lighting.

She came home and ordered out, sinking down onto the couch and pressing play on the movie she'd stopped last night. It was Monty Python's Holy Grail movie, a film she enjoyed every time she watched it. However, tonight, she felt lonely.

The next morning, she dressed in a nice pair of jeans and a purple dress shirt that accentuated her curves and smiled at her reflection as she headed out for the day.

Chris relaxed for the rest of the afternoon, organising a light meal for himself and watching some television for a few hours. Waking the next morning he left extra food out for his pet, forecast had predicted another hot day as he finished getting ready. Grabbing his jacket he wondered if he was going overboard on the way he dressed, "oh well " he mused to himself his boss could sort that out if she believed so. Soon parking downtown it was a short walk to work, entering the main foyer area and finding the right floor he took a few deep breaths.

Claire smiled and caught Chris taking a deep breath as she came out of the elevator. "Well good morning," she said cheerfully. "We have a progress meeting this morning, so why don't you come with me?"

Chris smiled into her eyes, her words sending a light shiver down his spine. First day and going to get his teeth cut on something, it would be a good day indeed. "Look forward to it."

She nodded and opened the door to the area that housed most of the offices and showed him where his was located before leading him to the conference room where they were holding the meeting. "Just so you know, everyone brings donuts in shifts. Next meting it's your turn," she said with a smile. "It's cool though because we get a discount at dunkin donuts and we get to charge it to the company. Coffee comes from the building. Always have either a laptop or a notepad with you at meetings and something to write with," she advised. "Any questions?" she asked.

Chris followed behind her, his eyes exploring every part that was now opened to them. Taking in her every word like his life relied on it he smiled at the last ones and shook his head lightly. "No questions, believe i have it all locked away for next time."

"Okay then, pick any seat on the side that you want and just hang out for awhile. We still have time before everyone needs to show up."

Chris glanced across to where she had indicated, taking out his pen and laptop as he sat down. His eyes moving across to a small painting on the wall. He was feeling more relaxed today as he tapped the pen lightly against the side of his laptop.

"I'm going to get something caffeinated from the hall. Do you want anything?" she asked with a little smile as she stopped before the door. "Soda, coffee?"

"Sure thing," she said. She left the room, feeling very melty from the way he'd just looked at her. He was very enticing. When she came back to the room, she handed him his coffee and set a bottle of cherry coke in front of her.

Chris had partly seen it yesterday but today it was more evident, the subtle sex appeal in the way she talked and walked. It was showing through from the inside, his mildly flirty nature stemming from a few photo shoots in his teenage years might make it worse. Taking a few sips of his coffee he glanced towards her. "Thank you."

She looked up from her lap top and smiled through her glasses. "Sure." She smiled and then went back to work for a few minutes. Unable to resist she pulled up a search page and typed in his name as another employee walked in with donuts. She smiled and minimized the window before pulling her actual work back up and an empty word doc. "Oooh, first choice"

Chris smiled at her words, something told him that he had triggered her mind to wander. Either way that would not last much longer as he glanced around the room occasionally, idling tapping the pen against the side of his laptop. Clearing his throat slightly as he noticed two more people enter before the last one. He proceeded to shut the door and looked straight at Chris for several minutes before beginning to speak.

Claire helped herself to a raspberry-filled donut and sat back in her seat at the head of the table. She looked up from her work as someone cleared their throat. "Anything else?"

Chris glanced around , his notepad next to laptop as he took a few more sips of his coffee. Eyes meeting hers briefly before concentrating on something just past her right shoulder. He was ready to continue with the morning.

Once everyone arrived Claire started the progress meeting, occasionally taking drinks of her her coke. She wrote down a number of notes as each person went through the projects they were on and how far in they were, as well as their projected deadlines. A few editors asked for an extension and were granted them before Claire asked if there was any other business that needed to be taken care of. No one spoke up.

"Alright then. We have a new staff member in our department. He's cot a lot of experience under his belt, not to mention an impressive and extensive resume. If he needs help getting the hang of things around here, give him a hand, and make sure he's feeling just as welcome as you did when you started. Everyone, this is Chris," She said making a gesture to him. He was met with a round of applause.

Chris had taken a few notes, typed away a fair bit as he listened intently to everyone speak. He would have a lot of catching up to do and he knew it. The inevitable point and applause filled the room and his ears, almost deafening when it first started and he tried to find that rock to crawl under. Since his teenage days the spotlight was not what he wanted really. Smiling he spoke only briefly. "Hello everyone, great to be on board such an exuberant and well established team."

The other workers left after his greetings and Claire stayed behind to clear up any questions and the rest of the donuts. "I have a few manuscripts for you today," she said with a smile. "Stop by my office in a few, okay?" That said, she was off and into work mode.

Chris watched everyone leave, putting his notepad and pen back inside the small pocket on the laptop case. Standing he carried it with him out of the office and down the long carpeted hallways. Stopping by his office he put the laptop and cup down, feet guiding him along with the slightest hint of her perfume to the large wooden door. Knocking twice he waited before entering.

Claire had put everything away by the time he knocked on the door. "Come in," she said as she saw him enter. "Hey. I'm giving you a political piece and something a little bit lighter. Go ahead and take a look, see what you think, and give me a progress report by the end of today, okay?" She handed him two large files of paper and smiled. "Hopefully they'll be enough to keep you occupied for now."

Chris entered slowly, the room seeming a little different to yesterday as he listened to her words, took the documents and smiled into her eyes briefly. "Will do that and thanks." No sooner had the last of his words been spoken he left the room and returned to his office, placing the documents down and getting a coffee for himself.

Claire had started to work, but that little tab in the window kept nagging at her until she couldn't stand it anymore. She opened the tab and found Chis listed on a few websites--totally normal. She saw that he'd once kept up a myspace page and clicked on that to open. She was greeted with a very sexy shot of his teenage self. Blushing as she looked at the picture, she clicked out of it and composed herself. She'd had a few pictures that were a bit more flashy than that, but it was so gravitating...and he looked so much like that today. She couldn't help but imagine him in the same way now, blushing furiously as she did so. Now wasn't the time for that kind of thing....but she just couldn't help herself.
