Minunoeryuu, known around the Realm of Xeoria as simply Ryuu, is an arcane magic user of considerable power. Once one of the greatest teachers at the School of Etridus, Ryuu long ago gave up that path to pursue his own, leaving behind the Academy but remaining in good standing with the other mages around the realm. Though there is no single school of magic that Ryuu specializes in, he was often called upon the determine the best path for new neophytes and helped them unlock their fullest potential. So it was that he was contacted by the professors of Etridus and asked to take ona special project of sorts. A young human female, showing great promise in the arcane arts, and yet having difficulty tapping into that potential. It was to be expected, as humans were not as in tune with the Weave as many other races, and though they could become some of the greatest and most powerful of wizards, it took time and a studious mind.

As a favor to his old Academy, Ryuu agreed to take on the student, and it was not long before the small group from Etridus arrived at his tower. Unlike many mages, building their towers on cliffs or surrounded by some enchanted maze, Ryuu's abode was surrounded by nature, built on a lake, and only accessible by boat or by flight. The white-haired elf waited patiently in his study, surrunded by books and with tiny fluttering Fae bringing him his tea when he was informed of the approach of outsiders. Knowing that it had to be the girl, and likely a small escort, Ryuu went to greet them.

"It is not a matter of abandonment, Cosette, but of power. There comes a point in every witch or wizard's life where tutelage cannot be so easily sought in books and broad lessons -- but in refinement and a dedication of a particular art. It would be a waste to keep you at Etridus. You of all people know this."

xxxxxHer people came dressed in robes of pale blue, three figures standing out against the naturalist landscape that spread before them, and hailing their arrival from a distance seen by even the poorest eye. Her new master's land was a far cry from the snow and ice the girl had grown up with; prompting a pang of homesickness to erupt within her stomach as her escort paused before the lake. Cosette and her company had been travelling for some days now -- having descended down from Etridus' peak and through the winding, oft dangerous pathways traversed only by those assured of their ability and skill. The twenty year old, while held in highest regard and esteem, could not risk the journey alone; especially not when it had taken so long for Ryuu to be convinced of her ability. Humans, whilst known for power, were also known for recklessness and unpredictability. Most of the older races wouldn't take them on for those reasons alone -- and entry into Etridus' halls should have been all the ascension she should ever want or need.

xxxxxDidn't she prove them wrong.

xxxxx"We can go no further, Miss Cosette!" cried her smaller companion, a gnome by the name of Pix, "Most masters have enchantments over their buildings to protect them from undesirables and, since we are only here to receive you, it makes no sense for us to go through the necessary rituals!"

xxxxxCosette pulled the hood of her robe away from her head, mahogany colored eyes peering into the distance and reveling herself (rather unknowingly) to both Ryuu and the fae in his charge. She turned to look at Pix, and gave a somber nod.

xxxxx"No, I understand. Thank you -- both of you."

xxxxx"Fraaankly," came the roll of the taller companion's tongue and, from behind the hood, Cosette swore she could see the kistune smirk. "I'm pleased to have a few days of good weather before we return. Are you sure you don't want to swap?"

xxxxx"Yes --" she had wanted to say, but held her tongue.

xxxxx"Kiku, don't be so rude!" Pix exclaimed, slapping his knee with her tiny hand. "Cosette will tell us all about it, won't you? Don't forget to write! I'll wait by the window every day. You can be assured of that!"

xxxxxThe brunette smiled and dipped her frame down, hugging Pix and then Kiku in turn. She didn't mean to let the embrace linger -- but gods did she think she'd miss them.

xxxxx"Go get, 'im, honey! Prove your worth!" Had been Pix's parting comment, and she waved frantically to human as she and Kiku departed back for the journey home.

xxxxxAs they turned, the woman clasped her hands together and waited patiently for her tutor's arrival.

Ryuu watched the trio through the divining pool, which allowed him to watch all around his abode. Not merely a safety measure, but a practical one as well, and the elven mage smiled tersely as he watched the embraces that seemed to pass to the young human girl - the one he now knew to be his new protege, and he reached up to rub his chin thoughtfully. She was quite comely, in her own way, and then she was alone, standing at the edge of the water a short distance from the tower and yet so far away.

Smiling to himself Ryuu stood and grabbing one of his staves, would stride upward to the very top level of the tower and through the observatory there until he was upon the roof. The reknowned mage moved to the edge and spoke a word of power as he touched his own throat and then addressed the girl across the expanse of water.

"Greetings to you, Student of Etridus! I await you and have been expecting you. Gaining access to my tower is just one of the first tests, and you may not touch the water to do so. If you are as canny as your former teachers have made you out to be, then crossing that small distance should be an easy matter." Ryuu called out to her. The test was a simple one, though not touching the water at all was part of it all. She could come across in any manner she chose.

Ryuu stayed where he was to observe and see how she might proceed.

While Ryuu spoke in a voice that was no more powerful than if he were standing before her, Cosette heard it echo across the water that parted he from her. Her eyes followed its point of origination, and her head tilted heavenward to the top of the observatory to where she could make out his silhouette in the beaming sunlight.

Not much could divined of him from a distance but, from the wizards voice alone, he seemed both pleasant in tone and manner. It surprised her, honestly -- for her mentors had painted a picture of a man who had only begrudgingly decided to take her as his apprentice, and that had been at at their almost constant insistence. "Ryuu is the best of the best," they had told her before she was to leave. "He's older than almost everyone here, and is versed in many more schools. You couldn't ask for better tutor."

It made Cosette nervous, if one was to ask about it. So much so that the respectful bow she gave looked awkward and stiff, even from his distance, and her arm extended up as if though she had thought to wave... but then thought better of it and quickly tucked her hand back to her side. What if he was a mostly formal gentleman? What if he thought her stupid - childish, even? It would not bode well for her to have come the entire way only to earn his scorn, and the girl was sure she wouldn't even be able to return to the school if he dismissed her. In many ways, Cosette felt as if though she had the entire school's reputation on the line; though the factual reality of that was up for debate.

Slowly her hand removed itself from the tucked place at her side, passing over the water as if to check for any dangerous or tricky enchantments. From what she could pick the water was as it seemed -- just water -- and, if anything, the worst of it might be a teleportation spell that would pluck the girl from its depths if her own magic were to fail. She could not fail.

Delicate fingers sparked with a magic that was purple, blue and white - surging around her fingers to catch the light and illuminate its potent state. Spreading from the tips and up her arms, it was almost as if the girl were shedding her corporeal form -- turning into something that was small, light and brilliant. In the blink of an eye she was there, a small creature surging with energy on one side of the lake, and then the next she had appeared on the other - quote as if nothing had happened for her to get there in the first place.

All she could do was hope that the simplistic and quickness of the spell would be thought of highly by him.

The simple teleportation spell most assuredly got her across the water and she reappeared close to the door of the tower, though Ryuu was glad she had not tried to over extend herself and breach the walls of the tower. That would not have been a missive he'd have wanted to send, that their prize student had been shunted off to other dimension within moments of arriving. Ryuu would not have felt bad about it, yet she had proven to show restraint. His last student had tried to show off and wound up decimated on the Plane of Chaos. It had taken the interior walls of the tower weeks to stop bleeding.

Willing himself to the entryway of the tower, Ryuu's own magic was much as the girl's had been, though not as flashy as he simply disappeared and then reappeared without the lightshow, though of course the girl would not have seen any of it. Opening the iron-bound oaken door, Ryuu saw her standing there a mere few feet away. She was quite pretty, with large expressive eyes and hair the color of chocolate.

Ryuu himself appeared as most elves might. Tall for his kind he stood an inch or two over six feet in height, though the knee-high leather boots he wore likely raised that by an inch. White breeches and gloves of some material that was not immediately identifiable covered his legs and hands and a large darkly colored cloak was secured about his torso with a wide leather belt that matched his pants. A staff with a crooked end was grasped in his right hand. His most distinguishing feature was his long and stark white hair that cascaded past his shoulders. His eyes were intense and scrutinizing as he regarded her a moment.

"Well, turn around girl, let's have a look at you." he commanded. Already his arcane sight was examining her for various dweomers and a frown crossed his features. "Is Etridus sending your things? urely that is not all that a girl of your age has packed?" he asked, a tone of incredulity in his voice. Young women were notorious for packing, overpacking, for even the briefest of stays and Ryuu expected her here for months most likely.

A soft, "Hrm." left him and he stood to the side. "Come in then." he said, and would allow her to move into the tower when she was ready. As soon as she would cross the threshhold it was obvious that the tower was much more than it might seem on the outside. The circumference of the structure was quite large, but stepping tinto the building was mind-boggling, as the expanse of the interior was not supported by the outside dimensions at all. The doorway and the walls were rather thick, the stone far too smooth to have been worked by mere mundane tools, and closer inspection would reveal that the 'blocks' of the tower were in fact simply carved grooves and the entirety of the structure was either ingeniously put together, or made of one large piece of rock. Either way, it was certainly strange.

Once she would enter Ryuu would regard her again, head canted to the side. A slight frown came to his face. "After such a trek I would imagine you might be hungry. Are you?" he asked. Even as he spoke a few of the tiny fey that had been flitting about peered at the newcomer from various hiding places, curious but shy.

Cosette... could have quite honestly cheered that she had made it across the water, had she not she thought she would be scolded for such a childish display. It wasn't that the girl doubted her own ability, for she had crossed such distances when in her classes, but her nerves would be the death of her. She wanted desperately to please the man who had likely heard so much about her from Etridus -- to prove that, even though she was so woefully plain, mortal and human, she could hold her own when up against races of equal potency.

The iron-bound oak door creaked open with his arrival, and Cosette made sure to straighten her posture and look ever the diligent, respectful student that her teachers and mentors shaped her to be. Dark, chocolate colored eyes peered upwards alongside the tilt of her neck, and she was finally able to get a proper look at the man who was to be her mentor.

Elves, at least from what the woman had read, were said to be stunning creatures. Tall, lithe and strong; they were at the heart of a bard's repertoire and held up as a pinnacle of beauty among the populace -- not just her race in particular. Ryuu was no less striking than what the Cosette had pictured based on their description, and his stark white hair was a point of interest as she drank in his appearance. He didn't subvert the stereotype in any way, and her stomach clenched uncomfortably in what she could only take for being nerves once more. In her opinion, if they were to stand side by side, there was nothing of interest to note about her.

"Oh--! Oh, gods, I'm sorry. Just a second." With a flourish of her hands, the girl grabbed hold of her robes, and a little twist was done so that her mentor could get a full view of her person. Despite what she might have thought of herself, Cosette had no features that looked to be bulbous or awkward on her form. She was on the shorter side of her kind -- a few inches over five feet -- though she was well proportioned from what one could see in her travel clothes, and her skin was smooth and blemish free. Upon completing her pirouette, and coming face to face with Ryuu once more, he could look upon delicate features framed by dark hair, which drew up to the deep, earthy tones of her eyes. When she smiled ( albiet embarrassingly because of his question ) he could note the rows of straight, white teeth; indicating a life that had been lead with a degree of comfort -- even with the harshness of her school's grounds.

"If it would please you, Master Ryuu --" A polite dip of her head was given, not unlike how she addressed her teachers back home. "My name is Cosette." A slender hand reached into her pocket to withdraw what looked to be a small, drawstring bag -- which she held out for his inspection. "The Masters back at Etridus taught me this spell as a parting gift. I don't possess much, but what I do has been made so small that it can be transported easily."

Whether or not he seemed impressed by that was hard to say, but a few seconds later did the eleven man stand to the side so that his new charge could enter and look upon his home. Cosette was quick to tuck her bag back into the pocket of her flowing robe, and it billowed around her feet as she stepped over the threshold and into his abode.

Etridus had its secrets, as most magical school were wont to do. The brunette had lived within its halls for as long as she could remember and, even then, she was sure she had yet to uncover its secrets. But his home... it was nothing compared to this. Each witch and wizard had their own flare to their homes, but his was something else all together, and it was magnificent upon first sight. So much so that she was left quite speechless -- that was until his inquiry came.

"Oh, me?" Get it together Cosette. Who else would he be talking too? The woman's cheeks flushed pink. "If it is not too much trouble --"

From the corner of her eye the human swore she saw what looked to be tiny fae-like creatures, and her eyes squinted as a very poor aid to try and locate them. Her right hand slowly lifted itself up, and she offered a wave in what she thought was their direction.

"You have a lovely home, Master Ryuu. It's very cosy."

The demeanor of the young woman was refreshing, for Ryuu had had his fill of pretentious mages, and ones that had little to no social skills whatsoever. This young girl seemed eager to please and a little self-conscious, yet that was to be expected. When the term 'Master Ryuu' spilled from her lips he could not help but smile, quite liking the sound of that. As she turned and allowed him to see her, Ryuu's head canted to the side, and he could recognize a fine human form when he saw one. In fact, her demure manner and politeness went a long way and Ryuu felt a little tug of something and his own countenance immediately warmed a little.

"Cosette. That is a very pretty name." Ryuu said, his voice practically a purr. "Please come inside and make yourself at home." he told her and the door shut behind her, locking as it shut with a certain finality. Low guttural syllables were spoken by Ryuu and as he said those words, several small shapes appeared from the areas where Cosette thought she had seen something and her friendly little wave had been noticed. Fairies fluttered toward her, one of them even carrying a flower, which it tucked into her hair. Another two flitted about her, feeling the cloth of her cloak in their small hands and the last hovered before her, just a foot or so from her face as it looked at her intently.

"Be nice." Ryuu said. "This is Cosette. Cosette, this is Matilda, Bea, Vera and Lace. They are my assistants at times, and I am sure you will get to know them well. They've been with me now for quite some time."

Matilda piped up, her voice surprisingly understandable, and likely due to some magical effect. "Exactly two hundred seventy nine years, three hundred and two days, sixteen hours and four minutes." she said proudly.

"I've raised them almost since they were born, their mother was a dear friend of mine, but was hunted by the Unseelie Court. I sheltered her and she died giving birth. Quadruplets are unusual to say the least." Ryuu said. "If you will follow me, I will take you to the kitchen." he said.

The room the tower had opened into was a sort of large living type area, with a huge overstuffed pair of chairs before a fireplace, though none was lit at the moment, and several shelves of books. Over the fireplace there were four tiny beds on the mantle. Ryuu would lead his new student through this area and into the next through a beamed archway, the kitchen beyond quite large and with a set of double ovens, a magically powered stove and an icebox which also seemed magical in nature. Immediately the fairies went to work, grabbing various items, and snacking on granules of sugar as they flew to and fro.

"What sorts of things do you like to eat Cosette? I can send for some things if you have certain dietary requirements." Ryuu asked her. He might be a strict taskmaster when it came to her studies, but that did not mean he was impolite or unable to accommodate her.

The girl's assumptions had been proven correct when her eyes finally saw through the quick dashes of light and colour of the fae-folk, and Cosette's lips drew up into a wide, beaming smile at their sight. Faeries were not a common sight in Etrudis, less their element be of ice -- and, even so, their mischievous, reclusive nature meant that students like her were more likely to come upon them as the victim of a prank. To that end, she stayed very still as they appraised her; ensuring that her eye fell upon them one after the other, and then to Ryuu as he gave their introductions.

"It's very nice to meet you," she answered kindly, carefully lifting her right hand to touch the flower that had been placed in her hair. Her robes against their fingers would be thick and warm -- a material touch too heavy for her current lodgings -- and the colour seemed far more adept at camouflaging her in snow than in the greenery. Still, the young woman didn't seem to complain, as she was far more enchanted by her mentor's company and his home than anything to do with her own self.

"I read about the persecutions when I was in Etridus," Cosette said in response, a gentle nod given just in case the flower in her hair was looser than she had first believed, "The teachers and many students said it was a great tragedy. I think I was one of the few who hadn't lived through it." Indeed, in comparison to Ryuu and the faeries, Cosette was little more than a babe. While an adult she might be by the standards of her people, her experiences were limited and her world view narrowed. To many, it would always remain that way. She simply didn't have the time to learn and grow, due to her impending mortality. However, her kindly smile was quick to return, even as she began to make her way to the kitchen, and she threw her head back to try and catch one of the sisters as they darted around her.

"I hope we can become very good friends!"

From there, she directed her attention... as best she could to Ryuu. As homesick as she still felt, there was a majesty and grandeur to his home that lessened the burden ( at least a little ) and Cosette could barely keep still as she tried to drink it all in. It was a distinctly human like manner to ensure one tried to see everything; even though his home was now her own. For how long was the real question.

Upon their arrival to the kitchen, the elven man spoke to her once more -- and Cosette was somewhat... thrown off by his question. Not because it was rude, demanding or sly, but that she had never really had the choice in what to eat; or the thought that she could request things based on her own preference. It caused her cheeks to flush pink, and she gave a nervous sort of laugh as her hand tucked loose strands of hair behind her other ear.

"Whatever pleases you shall be good enough for me, Master Ryuu," came her awkward answer. "At Etrudis I mostly ate what was put on our plate -- nuts, bread root vegetables... meat when we weren't snowed in. If the weather was pleasant and the longer trip could be made, we sometimes were able acquire enough to make honey cakes--"

Realizing that she was babbling, the small woman's teeth clacked together as she forced them shut.

As Cosette told the fairies that they might be friends, they seemed to titter happily and circled about Cosette as she walked, and were absolutely fascinated with the human girl. Ryuu was pleased enough with the way they had taken to Cosette, knowing that the sisters were very good judges of character and often had insight into things that he might not. That was rare though, and Ryuu was never wrong. Not that he would ever admit anyway. Cosette was suitably humble, and Ryuu found her more and more endearing, though as her mouth snapped shut Ryuu turned to her with a kind smile.

"You are free to speak your mind in this place Cosette. This is not Etridus, and if you are wrong then there is a lesson to be learned. Not speaking is worse." Ryuu told her candidly, and he wanted to reassure her this was not like any tutelage she'd ever studied under before. "I have many things here to eat, and this warmer clime and the forest around the tower is teeming with all manner of things. Flora and fauna of all sorts, edible and unedible alike." he said.

Getting into his stores the elven mage soon produced some things for a nice crisp salad, the four fairy sisters setting to work with small instruments, slicing and dicing, and having a little food fight as they cut of the vegetables. While they had set to work Ryuu tasked Cosette with firing the oven as he gathered things to make dough. Not all of the work was arcane in form, and the elf mixed the flour and water by hand, making a dough that would go in the oven to become bread. "Sometimes it is just better to get your hands dirty, that way you never lose sight of the simple things in life." Ryuu explained. Of course there was simple magic that could have done it all, but then, relying on such things all the time made one lacking in humility. That was Ryuu's opinion at least.

It was not long until the dough was ready and once it was Ryuu would produce a large venison roast from the icebox, which he would put in a pan and surround with potatoes and carrots. "I hope you like venison and vegetables." he told the girl, and it was not long before that was in the oven, and the bread dough was being allowed to rise a bit.

"While we are waiting on that meal, why don't you tell me what sorts of magic you have studied and what you particularly enjoy." Ryuu asked Cosette. He was curious to know what sort of caster this girl wanted to be. Etridus obviously thought she was talented, though he was unsure exactly why she wanted to learn what she did.

"I'm not so worried about being wrong, Master Ryuu, as I am about talking your ear off."

It seemed that Cosette's 'quietness' came from a place of restraint, and her natural state was a place far less still. But homesickness, nervousness and a want to please had suppressed quite a lot of it; even with the playfulness of the fae-folk and the kindness of her tutor. Her smile, however, grew to his words - albeit accompanied by further embarrassment at her stilted manner. "If I should have your permission sometime soon, I should love to explore the surrounding woods. Herbology is not my strong suit, but I'd love to see the surrounding flora and fauna."

Without a job of sorts to attend too, the young witch kept herself busy by watching Ryuu work, nodding once to his comment about work and 'getting one's hands dirty'. For her people, magic was oftentimes volatile and hard to manage, and those who chose to try generally ended up knowing just enough spells for help them around the home. Lesser still were accepted into schools like Etridus and, from that pool, a tiny minority sat in the brunette's shoes. She was both incrdibly skilled for it, and incredibly lucky.

"My teachers' said I was a jack-of-all trades," Cosette replied, her chocolate-colored gaze wandering from Ryuu's hands and up towards his face. "My favourite sort of magic, however, is the arcane... and a bit of transmogrification. I, um... had a bit of a period where I used to prank people by changing certain items of importance." She offered him a sheepish smile, one that seemed to suggest she wouldn't attempt such behavior in his company. "I think that's why they sent me to you. They said your power in the arcane, especially, cannot be matched."

One might think that Cosette meant to flatter him with her comment but the place she spoke from was full of sincerity. Her mentors had no reason to lie, so she was confident in their assumptions and bold enough to inform him of such. "I'd like to be able to move into transmogrification of the self one day. To be able to blend in with other races and learn about them... that would be very interesting."

After all, Ryuu was the first elf she had ever met, and the fae... she knew their kind, but to be able to speak to them was something all together.

"It smells delicious," she complimented, indicating with a tilt of her head towards the meal being prepped. "I honestly feel a little spoiled!"

The resppnse about talking his ear off brought a rare smile to the Master's lips and Ryuu thought a moment. "It has been a long time since I have had someone to talk to, so your conversation will be welcomed." he told her. "As for exploring around the tower, that can surely wait until tomorrow morning. We will spend the rest of this day getting you settled into your quarters and showing you around the tower." he told her. By now two of the fairies, Lace and Matilda, had flown to Cosette and burrowed into her pockets, their little faces and heads exposed as they snuggled together and fell asleep.

As Cosette explained her desires and her mischievous demeanor, Ryuu smirked and snorted a little. "You'll find I am not such an easy target." he assured her, though he knew she was not foolish enough to try such shenanigans here. It was the way of those younger to be full of such things though, and that she was both timid and full of fire was a wonderfully surprising dichotomy to Ryuu, and his eyes settled on her and rested there for several moments as she spoke of what she wished to learn.

"So you wish to be able to change your appearance. Not merely change it, but to actually become something else. Lofty goals, but attainable." he assured her. "Given time you can even learn how to change only parts of your body. To sprout wings for example." he told her, trying to gauge her reaction at the prospect of such a thing.

The meal would cook for a bit, and yet the smells of the cooking food wafted through the tower and Cosette's compliment was taken in stride. "I am sure we will enjoy it." Ryuu told her. "Perhaps I should show you around? Show you to your room?" he asked, knowing she likely wanted to get out of the heavy cloak she wore. "You can hang your cloak in the closet by the door. Those two will find their way out of it soon enough." he said with a chuckle, indicating the two lightly snoring fae.

"Oh, of course! After all the traveling I've done over the past few days, being able to rest and sleep - especially in a proper bed - will be more than I could ask for."

Cosette could feel the slight weight in her pockets of the faeries that came to rest there, and there was little doubt the thickness of the woolen fabric would provide them a great amount of warmth. An affectionate pat was given; the lightest amount of pressure that she could apply, but still be felt.

Then Ryuu spoke about the magic that she could learn and her attention was, henceforth, applied to only him.

Chocolate coloured eyes went wide as he explained the potential of such magic, and the young woman found herself nodding rapidly to his words in return. "I think it is mostly because --" she began to admit, a hand reaching up to secure the flower which had started to become lose from her excited actions, "--humans are very much undermined. But, if I can prove my ability within another races' skin, so to speak, if the truth of my identity is revealed, then those who doubt will have little to stand on."

The honesty of her words caused the young woman to flush pink, though such embarrassment was momentary when Ryuu offered to show Cosette her room. Her eyes lit up at the idea, and the young witch turned her head towards the closet and began to make her way towards it.

"I just don't want to wake them while I try to take it off!" said Cosette, though she did her best to bunch up the thick fabric where she could and ease it over her head -- barely disturbing the faeries in the process.

Below the thickness of her cloak was an equally well made, warm outfit. Like most schools, Etridus had an uniform - one that was worn regardless of one's age, station or otherwise. For races hailing from poverty and war, such clothes might be the richest thing they own. For other races hailing from luxury, it leveled them to an equal standing, as to prevent bias and encourage co-operation. They were a family. That notion was important to remember.

Cosette wore a blue, buttoned up dress with white embroidery; as if though her masters had thought to enchant actual snow into her clothes. The hem of the skirt ended just above her knee, accompanied by long, white stockings, and the woman began to roll up her sleeves as to allow her body more chances to cool. The dress was form hugging, as to encourage heat closer to her body, and made her look far less frumpy than her traveling cloak.

That cloak was then gently hung in the closet - and Cosette kept the door open so that the faeries wouldn't be trapped inside upon their awakening.

"There. Much better." She said, turning back to look at Ryuu and offering him a warm smile. "I'm sure, at some point, I'll have to find clothes better fitting the environment, unless you have a specific uniform you'd wish me to wear?" She knew some apprentices did, hence why it was better to ask than assume otherwise. "I'd love to see my room."

Ryuu smiled gently at Cosette's statements, both about the bed and being able to rest. "I am sure that you will find your quarters adequate. They are not expansive, but are comfortable and cozy." he told her and waited patiently as she hung up her cloak, the two fairy sisters still sleeping in the pocket and seemingly quite content. Unlike their Unseelie cousins they were not prone to pranks, and knew better than to truly harm anything of Cosette's regardless, as she was now under the umbrella of Ryuu's protection. A boon granted by being his protege now - he'd allow no harm to come to her.

The smells of the roasting venisonwafted through the tower and Ryuu bid Cosette to follow him. There was a winding stair downward, and Cosette's room proved to be just below the study that she had first entered. The bedroom was as Ryuu had described. Roughly twenty by twenty the predominant feature was the large bed, and the room also contained a chest of drawers and a nice armoire, as well as a small curtained area with a wash basin large enough for Cosette to fit into.

"This is your room, and my own is just down the hallway. The armoire contains the clothing that I wish for you to wear and I hope you find it accommodating. Please make yourself at home and you will be informed when dinner is ready." he told her, leaving her to her room.

The items in the armoire, when Cosette got around to looking, were simple yet functional, a cornflower blue gown that looked far too big, though whenever she got around to slipping it on it immediately conformed to her body, accentuating curves without being too tight and cinching around her waist and even buttoning itself up in the back. The hem of the skirt ended at mid thigh, and the short sleeves hugged her upper arms.

A small smile spread forth across Cosette's face at the mention of her lodgings, and her quick response attempted to dispel any kind of negativity or assumption that could have existed at his explanation of her lodgings. "My room in Etridus was small too, Master Ryuu. I shouldn't think it much of a change." Though, quite unlike his home, the schools reason for cramped confines was boh a mixture of the quantity of students held within the walls, but also to preserve the heat. Each student was taught a very basic heating spell which was, without a doubt, the most commonly cast enchantment across the grounds. The smaller the room, the warmer one could theoretically be. His was due to the tightness of his tower, though she was seldom one to complain about such.

Somewhat unfaithful to her intent, though not in the way she had been trying to avoid, the young woman gasped upon her entrance to the room -- chocolate coloured eyes darting over the bed, the chest of drawers and then to the wash basin -- a wash basin! Back in Etridus, men and women had their own bath and showering areas as designated by gender. They were communal, and often sought out on frigid days where one swore they could sit under the water for hours; less they freeze upon its leaving. It meant that Cosette had always had to select a time when she believe such places would be quiet.

"It is amazing!" She exclaimed, taking a small step inside. "You really are too kind, Master Ryuu. This is more than I could ever hope to ask for." Turning around with a beaming smile upon her face, Cosette nodded to his comment about dinner and making herself at home. He swiftly departed to attend to their meal, and left her alone to her thoughts and the 'majesty' of her quaters.

The first thing on Cosette's list was to clean herself up, and she stripped down to wash herself clean of dirt and sweat from the journey prior. Her other clothes were thrown neatly in the corner to be attended too later and, once she was dry and warm again, she pulled on the gown that Ryuu had given her and jumped at the suddenness to which it conformed to her body. She probably should have expected it since he had no idea as to the physique of his young ward, and it ensured she had something nice to wear upon her arrival.

From there, the young witch unpacked the small amount of items that she had and left the room early, seeing no point in remaining behind when there was little more to do.

Ryuu knew all too well the living arrangements in Etridus and though the room he had given her was small, it was hers, and cozy. As she progressed through her training and would need more room then she would earn it. Knowing that she would likely take some time to wash up Ryuu went back upstairs to the kitchen, checking the meal and the rising dough, and finding both coming along nicely. There would still be some time left before they could eat, but it would be well worth it.

Soon Cosette had come out of her room, and the gown provided for her was on and fitting quite well. Well enough that it drew Ryuu's eyes, and he had to reflect on truly just how lovely she looked. Lovely and innocent. It was a paradox in his mind, the urge to protect that innocence, or corrupt it entirely. "You look lovely." he told her, paying her a compliment as male and not just a teacher, and he spread his hands. "How about a tour of the tower while we wait on dinner?" he asked, and without giving her much choice in the matter he grabbed her hand and led her through the structure.

First tehy moved upstairs, where just above the kitchen was an expansive library. The walls of the level were lined with books, a large ladder on a track allowed access to the upper levels and the middle of the floor held a huge fireplace, some chairs and a large table at which to study. Ryuu also showed her the magical dumbwaiter, which he explained could be used on any level of the tower, though he had yet to show her if it came to her room or not. However it could be used for both meals and books, or any item that would fit in the confines, and you simply spoke where you wished for things to go.

On upwards was the observatory, complete with a huge telescope, as well as a plethora of charts and maps of the sky - complete with all manner of obsercanes by Ryuu. That led to the roof, where it was rather sparse, though Ryuu explained that in the warmer months he often brought a table and chair to that level to enjoy some time outside.

Back into the tower they went, and Cosette would learn that Ryuu's bedroom was on the same level as her own, and a bit larger, but not by much, with a couple of other rooms on that level as well, empty. The next level down was shielded with lead, and was a laboratory, fully stocked with some of the more dangerous volumes of tomes and librams, kept behind lock and key, and a myriad of dangerous substances. Ryuu readily admitted there was yet another level, lower still, but stressed that it was off limits. That Cosette was never to venture there, especially alone.

"The meal should be ready soon, dear girl, and I should go check on it." he told her and brought her hand to his lips to kiss the back of it, taking in her scent as he did so. "Do you drink wine?" he asked, curious.

The compliment that was given was received in a glowing hue of red, one that started from the tip of Cosette's cheekbones and extended all the way down the sweet, round flesh. Despite the heat she felt, however, the witch smiled, giving a little flourish of her skirts as if to 'show off.' "Why thank you, Master Ryuu!" She responded cheerfully, full lips turning upward in an bashful smile. "I must admit, I think blue is one of my best colours. That, or I got so used to wearing it in Etridus, I can't imagine donning much else." Laughter pearled from her mouth at the little joke she made, for Cosette did not yet know the dichotomy between innocence and corruption that was beginning to fester in her mentor's mind, and his hand around her own only deepened the hue on her face from the suddenness of the action. That and, to a lesser extent, she always associated the gesture as being close and intimate with another person ( less she be leading a child, of course ), so it took her a moment to adjust.

Ryuu's hand was smooth and cool, however, and Cosette found herself rather enjoying the way he lead her forward to explore the expansive library that seemed to be filled with more books than the woman could ever hope to read in her lifetime. She took in the sight with awe-stuck eyes; the books, the fireplace and even the ladder. Such a collection could have easily rivaled Etridus, and she had to wonder if they had thought to invest in his expertise. It was a question she did not think to voice, but he would no doubt hear her wonder in it and in the observatory above. Cosette was quite sure that she could live on those two floors alone -- moving only to the kitchen when she needed something to eat. Sleep was an unfortunate sacrifice when there was so much to learn, and the young woman imagined her nights by the telescope; studying the stars and making charts like some of her teacher's did back home.

However, they were not done, and soon the young maiden was lead to the laboratory and told of yet another floor beneath it, one that Ryuu stressed she was not permitted to see. While curious, Cosette accepted these terms easily enough; as she would much rather live with her curiosity then defy him and loose her mentor all together.

With that, however, their tour was completed, and the passage of time was long enough that their dinner would soon be ready for those who were hungry enough to dine. For Cosette, who had mostly survived on bread, cheese and a little bit of meat, the heartier meal was anticipated with vigor. Traveling was never easy, and what was provided generally only stated one's base needs. In comparison, she was very spoiled.

The hue that had faded over the course of their small trip returned tenfold when Ryuu paused, and the hand he still had enclosed in his was lifted so that his fingers could brush against the surface of her skin. With the sweat and dirt of travel stripped from her form, Cosette smelled faintly of mint and winter lilies -- a mild fragrance likely born of plants easily grown around her once home. It was pleasant however; if not reinforcing the innocence that she held, and the poor girl just about stumbled over her words as she tried to answer his question.

"N-Not... really, Master Ryuu. Well -- yes, I-I suppose? I drank a little wine on special occasions, but not enough to get drunk. The teachers do not, um... it is unwise for one to get inebriated in front of their mentors, no?" She shook her head wildly back and forth. "That is to say... if you are providing a little while, I-I should be happy to partake."

The blush on Cosette's cheeks and down her slender neck made her all the more adorable and in Ryuu's growing estimation - desirable. There was something about that pure unblemished flesh that was an immediate lure, and the arcane master had been alone for so very long. Her company was growing on him, and quickly. "Blue does suit you Cosette. You look very nice." he told her, hoping to bring about more blushing. The meal was done and only as she stammered and seemed unsure what to say did he give her a beaming smile and try to soothe her reservations. "You are no longer at Etridus, and this is now your home. A meal such as this deserves to have some nice wine, and we should christen your arrival here as well. The morrow will begin your training, and your assessment." Ryuu told her.

Without need of any utensils the mage grabbed the roasting pan from the oven, and meal within looking rather good, and the bread was placed in while he let the roast sit for a moment. Gesturing to a small door Ryuu told her, "That's the wine cellar. Give me a moment and I will pick something special." he said. Ducking through the small door he was only gone a moment before re-emerging with a large bottle, the clear crystal filled with a liquid the color of ripe cherries. "One of the best, and manufactured by my people, the elves." he told her. "Feywine." he said, and would remove the cork. "We'll let that breathe a moment." he told her.

As the bread baked, which would only take a few minutes, Ryuu grabbed some plates and flatware, and as he pulled the bread from the oven and let it sit to cool, he began to slice the roast, and portion out some servings for the both of them, having Cosette tell how much she would like. Once that was done he sliced the bread, still warm, and then poured them both a healthy portion of wine. "To new relationships and friendships." Ryuu said, holding up his glass. Once they toasted and took a drink, Ryuu would gesture broadly to the meal. "Let's eat!" he said, and would get her chair for her.

The meal was really quite good and Ryuu ate slowly, taking his time since there was no rush. "You might be wondering what I meant earlier by an assessment. I need to see where your skill level is currently. Of course your professors at Etridus told me, but there's no substitue for hands-on testing." he told her and took another drink. Ryuu made smalltalk throughout the meal, and seemed curious about Cosette's background, asking about her family and where she was from, how she learned she had a propensity for magic and in turn what made her pursue it.

As per his hopes, Ryuu's compliments only deepened the colour on Cosette's cheeks, and prompted the young woman to dip her head so that her face might be hidden behind dark locks of hair. The red was still prominent - contrasted, even - and she looked bashful and shy at his attention. After all, while beauty was not why she had fallen into his company, she still enjoyed it all the same. A little nod (as much as she could manage while still having her head bowed) was given; as was a kindly smile in return to his beaming. All the while, her stomach felt as if though it were alive with a hundred nervous butterflies flapping about inside the cage and brushing against the walls.

Gods have mercy that she might not die from sheer embarrassment.

Her eyes, however, as much as she tried to hide her face, did not avert from watching Ryuu -- and their were alight with rabid fascination as he prepped the last of their dinner. He did not need any utensils or protection against the heat, as his magic ensured protection in how he handled the bread and meat both. Cosette tried to see how he moved; how his hands manipulated the bread, any whispering under his breath or something that would hint as a means to make the enchantments fluid and easy. To that end, her gaze only changed when he mentioned the wine cellar, and it was all the witch could do not to blush again at his seemingly limitless kindness. "Of course, Master Ryuu," she said softly. "Take all the time you need."

It was barely a moment before the man reemerged, and fine wine was procured alongside an equally fine meal that hailed her arrival into his company. Even from a distance, Cosette swore she could smell the sweetness, and patience was all she had to give as Ryuu set the table and poured her a healthy glass. Her smile widened to his words, and she finally was able to look up at him proper.

"To new relationships and friendships." She echoed, taking a long sip from the glass and marveling at its taste. Elves, she quickly realized, knew how to enjoy themselves. And, for that, she enjoyed herself too - especially when it came time for her to sit and eat.

Thanking Ryuu as he pulled out her chair, Cosette settled and began to help herself to the food upon her plate. She was ever polite in her eating habits; never rushing or overfilling her fork, and she was mindful to engage with the conversation as it came despite her enjoyment of the meal. There was no denying that in any capacity. The bread was crunchy on the outside, but soft and light inside; the meat was tender and cooked well; and the vegetables retained their freshness without being under cooked.

"No, Master Ryuu, I completely understand," Cosette began, answering his comment with due haste. "It is one thing to be told of one's ability, but it's another thing to see. I can only hope that my skill will be at a level to please you. I know... my reputation as a human is to be little reckless and overzealous, but I hope that hasn't come across thus far."

Throughout the meal came the answers to the questions her master so desired to know, though not all contained a great amount of detail due to vagueness from those whom the witch had grown up with. Cosette explained that she was an orphan from the sands of V'a -- a desert, merchant nation that had been besieged almost twenty years ago by the war nation Fariel. It was why Cosette was only known as Cosette, for any last name she held died with her parents who were either murdered or taken in as slaves. Etridus, being a hospitable school as well as a magical one, had taken her in upon her discovery with the intent of sending the girl away to a proper home when she was of age. When her magical ability became known, however, it was all too easy to give her the skills to learn - and Cosette learned masterfully.

By the time she was done speaking, the woman was incredibly full. Her wine glass was nearly depleted, and hunger had been replaced with a weariness likely caused by her deep satisfaction.

Ryuu was rewarded as he hoped he might be and as they sat and ate and Cosette spoke to him, the elf grew to find her more and more fascinating. As she spoke on her skill level he gently shook his head. "Whatever your skill level I am sure that I can further it, or hone it more so that we can get you more fully immersed in the skills you so desire." he promised, and he poured himself another drink. "Would you care for some dessert young Cosette? It might match your sweet personality." he teased her, showing a little of how he was starting to view her.

Whether or not she partook of any, Ryuu had some chocolate cake from the day before and sliced some, serving her some if she wanted, and sitting to calmly and slowly eat his slice. Once that was done, and it was obvious that Cosette would not be much longer for this waking world, Ryuu would help her to her room, carrying her if need be, and by now it was obvious that the wine was having an effect. Making sure she was seated safely on the edge of the bed Ryuu fetched the nightgown from the armoire, and with deft fingers and sure hands he would undress her from the blue outfit provided her. It came off easily, seeming to almost help him and Ryuu's warm fingers and hands slipped along her silky soft skin in just the right spots, though he did not try to touch or grope her in any way.

The nightgown was slipped on over her head and like the other outfit it shrunk down to size, a band under her breasts lifting up those soft mounds as the rest of the gown flowed to her knees. Though not sheer, it was quite lovely and Ryuu helped her get under the covers. He practically loomed over her and he bent to kiss both her cheeks and then place a soft kiss upon her mouth. "Goodnight my student. he morn will be here before you know it." he said, and caressed her cheek softly before moving out of her room, the lights dimming as he did so.

Ryuu was up early and as the sun broke over the horizon he entered Cosette's room to wake her. Shaking her gently he would rouse her and tell her to meet him in the kitchen to break her fast and then they could start on her assessment. Once she would meet him there he would show her a multitude of ingredients and ask her if she knew how to cook. "Cooking will be a part of your training. magic is much like cooking; putting together certain things to make something entirely new. Whether it is crafting a spell or brewing a potion, cooking food is much akin to magic." he told her.

Sweet Cosette's face filled with colour to his kindness once more, and there was little doubt that the wine within her belly was loosening her inhibitions and bringing her to a point of almost total relaxation. This wasn't to say that she was acting in a stupid or childish manner, but she didn't feel the need to be as reserved as she appeared upon her first coming -- and her true personality seemed more willing to shine. "Oh! Um... oh, perhaps just a little bit, yes? I'm sure I could fit that in," she answered, a giggle leaving her mouth as the last of her glass was drained and set carefully to the side of her plate.

As much as she tried, the poor girl could only eat about half of what Ryuu had offered, and her exhaustion and somewhat intoxicated state made her far sleepier than she dare admit. She was tipsy, but not inebriated, meaning that she was able to walk with only mild assistance to her room and was helped upon the bed. Had her master thought to leave her to her own devices, there was little doubt that poor Cosette would have passed out in her uniform, but Ryuu seemed determined to ensure she slept comfortably and deeply for her first night.

"You don't have too --" Came the girl's mild protest, but there was little more she could do to stop him as the uniform was loosened, and warm fingers passed over soft skin to slide it from her form. Cosette's body was lithe -- a palette of pale peach and cream; where youthfulness endowed her with soft, supple curves and the daintiness of a lady. As he worked, the young witch shivered under his touch; the gentleness causing goosebumps to rise upon he skin and a content sigh to leave her mouth. She barely even seemed to notice the fact that he was bringing her to nakedness, though she rationalized his intentions to be pure. He didn't grope or force himself upon her and, soon enough, the nightgown was eased over her head and her body slid between clean sheets. She nestled deep within their warmth, and her eyes peered up to Ryuu -- half lidded and serene.

Two kisses were placed upon either cheek, and then one on her mouth. There was a sort of slow suprise to the affection, though it appeared as if though Cosette did not deny it. Perhaps it was an elven thing? She resolved to ask him in the morning, as she could barely keep her eyes open as it was.

"Goodnight," she called quietly, soon adrift in the land of dreams and make believe.

The morning light drifted in soft beams over her bed, though it had not been enough to wake her until Ryuu entered. A gentle shake brought her to life, and a sleepy sort of moan left her mouth as her eyes broke open, and her body began to stretch like a cat. "Breakfast? Oh, morning! Mm. I won't be long."

Once he left, Cosette was able to work on pulling herself from bed. She pulled the blankets back and swung her legs over the side, sleepily pushing herself onto two legs and making the bed back up with her hands. A small amount of water was drawn to the washbasin, splashed upon her face, and she patted herself dry before moving to find her uniform. She wasn't hungover, thank goodness, though the events of the night drifted slowly back to her, and she swore she could feel her skin burning thinking about how he had kissed her -- and the gentleness of his hands upon her skin.

Pushing it to the side as she dressed, Cosette pulled her dark hair up into a high ponytail and made sure she was neat before moving out to meet him.

A smile and another greeting was offered as she entered the kitchen, and chocolate-colored eyes moved to the ingredients upon the table. "I can cook a little bit," the woman answered, giving a shy sort of nod. "I can make bacon and eggs... pancakes, if Etrudis had the supplies. I doubt muesli and berries count, but I can put that together, too." Easing herself to his side, the woman placed her dainty fingers upon the kitchen counter. "Will this be with magic or by hand?"

Ryuu was dressed all in black, in stark contrast to his pale skin and alabaster hair. A gentle smile as her question was asked and then her lesson began. "No magic. All by hand and tactile senses. Besides the satisfaction one gets from that most base of senses, one must learn precise hand movements in the mundane things as well as the intricacies of spellcasting. The use of one's hands must be sure and strong and few activities besides coking accomplishes that. Precise measurements and sure movement." Ryuu told her and made a broad gesture. "You have things here to make eggs and bacon, sausages, and there are fruits to be peeled or sliced. Flour and water, butter and oil - all for pancakes and biscuits. Too much of one ingredient and your recipe falls apart, and too little of another and the consistency is ruined. You have everything you need here to cook. You may use the recipes out of the cookbook, or experiment on your own." he told her, and leaned back on the counter to watch as she would set to work. Mixing ingredients such as this was much safer than in the lab, but the principles were the same.

During the course of making things Ryuu would sometimes move behind her, his body pressed to hers as he would show her a different technique or a subtle way to adjust her hands or her stance to make things easier for her, though the closeness of his body would gently nudge her how he thought it best to teach her, practical application in magic maybe not able to be seen from her vantage at the moment, but certainly in his mind there were things to be taught. His hands were strong and sure as he would grasp her smaller ones, showing her how best to do even the most simple things, such as pouring water, so as to minimize or cancel splash altogether. When working with more volatile materials this lesson would pay off.

"You have very nice hands Cosette." Ryuu told her, the pads of his fingers rubbing the backs of her hands lightly before he let them go and they settled on the slight flare of her hips as he stood behind her and watched.

If it was one thing that Ryuu was offering to Cosette, it was freedom and the opportunity to choose. While the woman never felt as if though she were bound when under Etridus' teachings, neither was she allowed far past its walls or given the means to pursue hobbies and talents outside of their rigid structure. It wasn't because they didn't trust her ability or feared rebellion, but there was only so much that they could do with limited funds and the structure of their tutelage. Sending their brightest away to another teacher was the best move that they could make, as Ryuu could give her the resources which the school lacked.

To that end, the young woman settled on raspberry and blueberry pancakes, setting aside the other foods for later use as she began to prep her meal. Flour, eggs, milk and a tiny bit of vanilla essence was added to the mix -- the berries combined only when the batter was of a thick consistency and well combined. As she worked, she was helped by the elven man who stood closely behind her; his hands warm and confident as he adjusted her grip and fixed her posture to limit strain, spills and ease of work. While the closeness of his body was duly noted ( it was a little hard not ), Cosette didn't think anything of it. He was much taller than her, and leaning over her shoulders to guide her hands was far easier than trying to work at an awkward angle. It made sense, and she couldn't fault him for it.

Feeling the rush of blood to her face the moment that Ryuu complimented her, Cosette felt her fingers twitch back as if holding modesty all their own, and the woman let out a embarrassed laugh as she reached for a pan to put against the stove. "Th-Thank you, Master Ryuu," she stammered, willing herself not to blush like a schoolgirl whenever her teacher offered praise. Gods, did she feel like a child! But, when his hands moved from her own and rested against the flare of her hips, there was little she could do to stop the colour hummingbird thrum of her heart. She was nervous, that was all. For all of his kindness towards her, she didn't want to displease.

Mindful of said hands, the witch moved to cut a tiny square of butter from the stick and drop it into the center of the pan, swirling it around until it coated the middle and wouldn't cause her food to stick. A small, rounded dollop of batter was poured in, and her first pancake was put to the heat.

"I should say -- oh, well, I mean..." the woman tried to push out. "Your hands are very nice too. They're slender and strong."

It was easy to tell the effect that he was having on her, as her heartrate spiked and her color rushed to her cheeks and down her throat, even along the tops of... Ryuu smiled, his vantage point letting him look down the front of her gown, though just a little since it magically fitted itself to her. The soft perky swells of her breasts were unmistakable though, and Ryuu felt something that he had not felt in a long time. Sexual desire. His kind were not known for their rapacious ways, though some branches of his kin were very sexually liberated. As was he. He'd not had a female of breeding age, nor size, in his tower for many decades, and that thus nubile young woman had come here seeking him out, to learn... well, the lessons he could teach her, and would teach her, were many and varied.

"Stringer than you know, child." he whispered to her and brought his hands up along her sides to caress over her ribs as the batter in the pan began to sizzle a little, small air bubbles forming on the topside as heat sought to escape. "Make sure you let it get done, but don't burn it. Knowing just the right amount of heat to apply, and for how long, is crucial." Ryuu said, and his hands slipped back down her torso to her hips once more, her firm plump rear pressed against him in all the right places. The elf was not aroused, not yet anyway, though he knew his desire for her was simmering just under the surface.

Soon it was time to flip the pancake over and Ryuu spoke again, softly, "Make sure you get under it well, don't break it." he urged, and would use one hand to guide hers with the spatula, flipping the golden brown pancake to the pale soft side, and he smiled. "You do have a knack for this, and I think teaching you will be a pleasure." he told her. Over the next little bit they made more pancake, until they both had several to eat, and Ryuu had her slice him up an apple. "Once you can peel an apple in one continuous strip, then I know you're getting the hang of it." he told her, as the knife slipped through the thin skin several times. But she showed promise. Once they sat down to eat, Ryuu explained how things would go. "I'll ask you to scribe the spells you know, since the teachers at Etridus should have shown you the arcane writing for each spell. Of course, most spells use simply gestures and words, but if there were no universal language for it, then things would be rather difficult." Ryuu explained. "These pancakes are delicious." he affirmed, and once breakfast was done, the little fairies came in, having finally awakened, to help with the dishes. The fairies seemed to titter as they flew around Cosette once more, knowing that she would be staying awhile, and once the dishes were done Ryuu took her back to the library.

"Here is where you will scribe your spells." he told her, and provided vellum as well as quill and ink. I need you to write each dweomer, no matter how small or insignificant. I need to know the breadth of your knowledge, and assume if you write the formula that you know how to cast the spell."[/b] he said, and clasped his hands behind his back to wait and watch as she completed the desired task.
