      • The afternoon sun trickled through the forest, glimpses of golden hue bore down over the sheltered landscape. It seemed like a beautiful day so far, the birds were singing and the sun was shining. It was just a shame that one of the more beautiful days had to be this very day, of all days. It wasn’t exactly the worst day of her life, well, not yet at least. But it wouldn’t be making the highlight reel either. Today was the very day Amelia Dubrinsky was set to marry an Alpha of a fellow royal line. There were four royal packs left; it was a more definitive name for original bloodlines. They came from vastly different areas, and more importantly, had very varying talents.

For many years now the packs had been in a state of war. Several packs including one royal lines had been captured or lured into a revolt. One of the royal packs, the Beaumont pack, decided that they were above their kin simply because of their numbers and special ability. Thankfully, most of the bloodshed had been closer to their home than the Dubrinsky’s pack. Amelia and her family knew it wouldn’t be long before it was drawing in on them, forcing them to fight the infamous Beaumont pack or to give in. The young she-wolf lived with several brothers, only one older than herself and her parents and of course their extended family along with a few members who’d joined over the years. It was a long and rocky road as to why she was being groomed to be an alpha as opposed to her older brother.

“Amelia, come on, it’s time to get into your dress.” A soft, older voice called. Her mother, Alise was not a woman to be kept waiting. Amelia was in the process of being groomed to be an Alpha. It was common in Werewolf packs that a pair from Alpha lines would be married and settle to make their own pack. It was what she was set to do from this day onward, and it freaked her out. Of course she’d somewhat agreed to this joining, simply because it would unite both packs. At a time like this, she could appreciate how their old ways could help. So, it wasn’t a question of whether she was going to, it was more a question of if she wanted to. If she had the selfish tendency her brothers had, she’d have run the moment she woke up.

The twenty-six-year-old rose, making her way through the hand made wooden home. Everything in their land was made by their own hands. Sure, there had been some advances with plumbing but it remained a tradition and a privilege to make their own homes. It was as if someone could feel the love each family had put into making their home. “We still have several hours.” Amelia noted as she leaned on the wooden door frame, her gaze swooping over the warmly lit bedroom. In the left hand side of the room her dress hung on a stump that was supported by a metal rod that spanned out toward the floor.

She’d never considered love, or marrying really. She’d spent most of her life training with her brothers, there wasn’t much that she thought of that she could define as a young woman’s dream. All that really mattered in her mind was her home and their safety, it was the only reason she was stepping up to take a stranger’s hand in marriage.

“Amelia, it’s going to take a few hours.” Her mother cautioned, pointing her eloquently painted nail toward the wooden stool before her. With a defiant groan, Amelia made her way into the room. Alise carefully unhooked the dress from the stand and made her way toward her daughter. It had been made by Amelia’s aunt, in the traditional fashion of past wedding dresses. The blonde slowly slipped into the silk like material. The dress fit her like a glove, a silk stitched corset clung to her curved frame as the skirt trailed outward, flowing as she walked. “Now sit, it’s time to pin up those curls of yours.”

An hour later Amelia began to realize her mother wasn’t joking about it taking some time. Her hair had been brushed and pinned back, allowing the feminine features of her collarbone and jaw to be seen. Despite her blonde appearance, the female had dark brown lashes and eyebrows, a trait from her father. The nerves were already beginning to rise within her. Amelia knew little of her future husband; all she did know was that he was an Alpha of one of the most blood thirsty packs. Well, when they lost it that was. She’d heard one too many stories about how vicious they could be. Amelia’s nerves weren’t to be mistaken for weakness, the woman could hold her own. She was more concerned with the delicate matters. It wasn’t something she did.

Once she was finished getting ready the female was led out to meet the rest of the pack, who seemed to gasp in awe. It was needless to say Amelia didn’t want the attention. She just wanted to get this wedding over with. In some way she held some resentment toward this event, she was a warrior, and one of the best in her pack. She was being prepared to take over as Alpha from her parents. Yet now, she was going to be moved to live with her husband and form their own pack. Her whole life was going to change simply because of this war. It only fueled her need to bring about the end of this feud.

The pack made their way toward the area set between the lands for the wedding. It took a good deal of time to hike through forest and reach the limit of the next area. “You do realize you’re going to end up a pregnant housewife, right?” Caine chuckled beside her, he was the sibling closest to her in age. The female simply snorted as she glided through the warm grass. “If he thinks that’s what is going to happen, then he has a big problem on his hands.” Caine simply shook his head, chuckling. “We’ll see. I expect a nephew to be named after me.” He eyed his sister as she huffed and continued onward.

As they finally arrived it was clear the irritation of the event was getting to Amelia. How dare she have to throw her life away with some Alpha as opposed to making her own choices. Far too many of her kind had treated women as the lesser sex, that they couldn’t be as vicious. If anything, they could be more so. Amelia had trained since she was able, she was like many women in her pack. They cherished their skills and their ability to defend their home. That wasn’t going to change. She’d make sure of it.

“Caine?” She paused, grasping her brother’s arm as she noticed the rather large space that had been decorated with various petals trailing up toward a wooden alter. Wooden stumps and crafted stools dominated most of the area, they sat between wild flowers and lush clumps of grass. It looked… suitable. Magical, even. Her brother simply stared, they were both somewhat shell shocked at these turn of events. “May I?” A deeper voice echoed behind her. Her father, Abel slipped his arm around his daughter’s waist. “You look beautiful. Like a true Alpha.” Amelia beamed with pride, it was all she’d ever wanted to hear from him.

It felt as if she were going to join the enemy, so to speak. After all, she’d be leaving her family and all that was familiar. “Do you think we could manage without this joining?” she murmured to her father as Caine took his leave to help guide the pack to their seats. Abel glanced down toward his rather petite daughter, “You know the answer to that.” Amelia nodded slightly, “I had big plans for this pack.” She muttered coldly, staring out toward the isle. It seemed they were early. “Being an Alpha means making choices that you don’t like to make and seeing them through for the greater good of the pack.” He reminded sternly.

By the time others began to arrive, Amelia was more than ready to get this ordeal over with. The female waited for everyone to sit, including her family. It wasn’t tradition for her to walk alone up toward her future husband, but as this was a sacrifice on her part, she felt it was needed. Her gate was slow, her bare feet brushing against the soft grass as she made her way toward the woven, wooden arch. It was then that she noticed how beautiful the space the packs had picked was. It was open, trees concealed the event in the distance. The sky was beginning to turn a vivid orange and pink as the sun began to set, giving a dimming light over the land.

Eventually she reached the top of the isle, the female barely glanced over toward her future husband. Mainly out of disdain for the change that he represented. All she had to do was agree to give herself to him, which conflicted with everything she felt at that moment. The light blonde curls cascaded down her back as her sharp emerald hues stared forward toward the arch. She prayed it would be over soon.
