For years it had seemed that James' life had been constantly going down hill, he used to have a good life, a good job, a beautiful woman who he was in love with, but one bad decision changed all that. James had always had commitment issues, he found it hard to fully devote himself to one person out of fear that things may not work out, of course, in his head he knew this was a stupid mentality, if he thought like this for the rest of his life, he would end up alone, but it was not something he could fix and was something that always made him feel uneasy around the person he was with. James knew that this would cause him problems at some point and when it eventually happened, he only had himself to blame. James' girlfriend at the time had started to become more and more agitated about this side of James, James knew this was the reason for their constant arguments, but in his head he was never in the wrong.

After weeks of what felt like a very shaky relationship and one big argument, James finally made the decision that things was just not going to work, he left and did not return. James spent most of his days after that regretting what had happened, but because of his pride he never went back or tried to fix things, in honesty he did not know whether she was the person he was supposed to be with, but he was frustrated that he threw the chance to find out, just because of his personal shortcomings. A few years later, although James did not make any more contact with his ex, he did find out she had a daughter, he always thought if it was his, she would have told him, but the thought lingered at the back of his mind, a part of him knew it was his, maybe it was just the timing or just a gut feeling, but James knew he had a daughter that he knew nothing about.

Because of this happening, it affected James more than he would have liked, he didn't date again and he had even lost a number of his past jobs due to his lack of concentration, he tried to tell himself that nothing can be done now, but still it does not improve the situation he is in. James wanted to have one last attempt at a fresh start, he was determined to try and forget the past and finally get on with his life, he recently got a new job at the local high school, James wasn't always a teacher, but it was something he enjoyed doing, for now at least and this time, he was going to give it his all. James arrived at the school early and arrived to the class, obviously, he would not be teaching his new students everything, but he would be their main teacher, so he wanted to make sure to get to know them all and try to help them the best he could. James wrote his name on the blackboard behind him and as he was waiting for all the students to arrive he started looking over the register, one name stuck out, his only thoughts were. "It can't be." Although he did not know her face, James was sure his daughter was in this class.

For seventeen years, Emily has lived her life without a father figure. It wasn’t a big deal, really. Emily never felt particularly sad about it, or anything along those lines. In fact… she was not in the least bit curious as to who… contributed to her being alive today. It isn’t as though it would change things any, anyway. For all she knows, the man is somewhere way on the other side of the continent, living with a wife, kids… and maybe a cute golden retriever. Emily could NOT care less. His presence, or lack thereof, never bothered her in the least, and it never did bother her mother. Lost in a crowd of adolescent teenagers, Emily looked at her little slip of paper, trying to read what building she needs to start heading towards. Bits and pieces of dark brown fell against the young girl’s jawline… the rest tumbling down over her shoulders in rich curls. Her eyes are a dark, vibrant blue, the likes of which remind people of a cold winter night sky.

Where do I head first? Emily lifted her head, looking very much lost. Being a transfer student, of course she has no idea which building is, say, the science building, and which one is math. The gym is fairly obvious, at least… Swallowing the lump in her throat, Emily decided that her best bet is taking one step at a time. In the first, she stopped a tall, very intimidating woman to ask for directions… only to be surprised that she was not at all intimidating. Looks can be deceiving. Emily walked down the hall, stole a left… went down to the next, and found her destination. Luckily she wasn’t running late… otherwise, that would just be another thing drawing attention onto herself, besides being new. Her heart racing, Emily came in through the door, quickly taking a seat near the back, next to the window. Maybe if she keeps her head down, she’ll survive today without any embarrassment...

Emily drew in a deep breath, trying to calm her silly heart. This is no big deal… I have no reason to be nervous… she told herself. Seriously… This is no big deal… Problem is, she can feel everybody’s eyes on her… not only that, but there was whispering, which has to be about her… A wave of dark brown curls fell forward from behind her shoulder, obscuring her features from view, and providing a small bit of relief. A leg lifted to cross over the other. In a mid-thigh, dark blue skirt, a white blouse, and a dark blue jacket… she was quite a beauty, one certainly to catch the eye of any hot-blooded male. Emily bent her head further down, tempted to hide her face in her arms. I wish today is over already… I hate being the ‘new kid’ on the very first day…
