Carefully her slender fingers slid the supple, black stiletto from her heel. It fell to the floor just seconds before her hand massaged her tired, aching foot. Both heels lay slightly astray from one another as she sat in the plush chair looking out over the calm, still waters of the swimming pool through the grand, glass patio doors. The melodic sounds of a saxophone softly drifted through the now quiet room. The event had been planned for outside, poolside, but increment weather had forced the soiree inside. It was a small adjustment, one that caused no real consequence. In the grand scheme of things, it was truly insignificant to her. Taylor has merely told the caters to change the location. For the price she was paying, they were more than happy to accommodate her wishes.

She wasn’t a spoiled princess, by any means, but when it was something she cared deeply for, she made sure everything was perfect. The crystal was perfect, the cuisine sublime, all of his closest and dearest friends were present and accounted for, and of course she had done everything possible to ensure the atmosphere would be to his liking. After all, isn’t that what a good wife does?

She loved Marcus very much, and throwing these parties was one way she showed him. Lately he seemed to be traveling more and more though, and it was starting to take a toll on her. Oh she would never allow him to see it. It was already difficult enough for him to leave her for extended amounts of time. She would never make it harder on him. So Taylor would sweep her emotions under a blanket of smiles, brilliant quips, and smooth dance moves in the arms of her beloved husband. That is, until he was gone. Then she let her hair down, so to speak. The true emotions would slowly trickle from her until the flood gates finally had broken and washed away. Usually this happened when she was alone, safe and secure in that knowledge, in their martial bed. Then she would embrace his pillow, inhale his scent, and release all the agonizing emotions she was experiencing as she was just beginning the next leg of her time without him as he moved onward with his career. She held no ill will towards him for that. Marcus was passionate about his work.

There were times Taylor wished he was equally as passionate about her and their marriage. He was certainly one to use the same tools no matter what task was at hand. To most they seemed to be the perfect couple, but everything is not always as it seems. Underneath the façade of marital bliss was a woman screaming to be heard by a man who had fallen deaf to her needs and desires. She longed for so much more from him, but Marcus had learned to tune her out, or so it seemed. She wanted to explore things, to try new adventures with him. He was the one she had married. She chose him to spend her life with, and he seemed content to remain in the same place. Her love to him, her vow, would keep her by her side, but even that was starting to wear thin along with her forgiving nature about his constant work endeavors.

Her thoughts were scattered among memories of their life together as she gazed out into the night and falling rain. It was late. All the guests had gone after seeing Marcus off. All that remained in the house was Taylor and two their closest and dearest friends. Two men that had agreed to help her when needed while he was away. It was one thing that she knew would bring Marcus comfort while he was away. Taylor was normally very independent, and frankly she didn’t think she needed much help, if any. The fact remained that she wanted to put his mind at ease though. She could them stirring, moving about in the house. Forcing a smile on her face, the thought crossed her mind, ‘only a little while longer. Wait until they’re gone before you cry.’ She moved, barefoot, gracefully through the room and came to rest in the doorway. It seemed they were making sure everything was back at it should be after the party and the caters had left. “You two don’t have to stay any longer. In fact, to be perfectly honest, I think I’m going to relax a bit before bed. Maybe have another glass of champagne, curl up on the couch with a blanket, and watch some sappy, old movie on television.” There was some truth to what she was saying. She would have another glass of champagne, and a blanket would be involved. That sadly was where the truth ended, but neither Jon nor Aiden needed to know that. “Anything that is left to be done can wait until tomorrow. It’s been a long day. Marcus is in the air now, relaxing on the plane. I think it’s time we all do the same.”
