New York City was the city where Mark was born some twenty-five years ago. He was one of the lucky ones that had parents whom was hard working and made a decent living, giving him the means to go to school to learn not to learn how to live off the streets like so many others had to do. He was thankful for that, but now, he wished he had the street smarts those kids had, for now they are the ones that are surviving this hell on earth. They are the one that at the moment Mark was running away from, trying to survive. He had already witnessed them kill two men and raped the two women they had with them, they were now dragging them off for the others to have their way with them. Mark’s stomach churned from witnessing what he did and he felt a terrible pain of shame for not trying to help them. But there were eight of them and only him.

He waited until they dragged the screaming women back to their crib giving him the opportunity to flee the area. His chest was pounding with fear and sorrow. I couldn’t help them! He barked at himself. If you tried you would be dead and those girls would still be getting raped. Move on, maybe the next corner you can help someone. That was his thinking while he still heard the girls screaming as they were now getting gang raped. Mark shook his head and began running away like some damn coward. Tears filled his eyes as the shame ripped through his chest.

A few blocks down he slowed down to get his bearing. He was now a few blocks away from market square area. He wanted to get into that place to see if he could find some food, maybe a steel pipe or even maybe a ball bat or baton that some cop dropped in the panic. He had to find something other than just his fist. Luckily he had managed to avoid most trouble. He continued to walk toward the very familiar building. But then he seen them, Damn! It was a horde! Literally dozen of the walking dead was lumbering down the street, somewhere stuck in the chainlink fence that surrounded the construction site.

Mark’s eyes light up! Surely I can find a steel pipe, crowbar anything that can be used as a weapon so he could protect himself. He slowly made his way around the horde and into the construction site from the back. Moving slowly he began his search for something that could be used as a weapon. He moved a few long poles and like an idot, they clanked like chimes in a wind storm. Fuck! He muttered as the four walkers made their way toward him, his head shifted from side to side looking for anything that he could use. Seeing a few bricks he picked them up and like a lousy baseball player his first brick went about three feet above their heads and landed harmlessly several feet behind them. He quickly picked up another one and threw it at one that was closer to him, the brick bounced off his head with no effect.

Scrambling he made it over a pile of debris, sliding down the other side with so much racket that it draws several more toward him. Mark’s eyes grow wide as he searches for the next place to run. His eyes spot a stairwell that was some thirty feet away. Wasting no time he took off and with a little sigh of relief the stair well was clear. Running up the stairs with all that he had, was making a lot of noise but he didn’t care at the moment he just wanted to get as far of the ground as possible..

It had been about six months since the world had gone to hell in a handbasket. However Alesha was beginning to think that no matter how much time passed, she would never become used to this new life. It was too dark, painful and horrifying. The worst of it all was that those words more described the surviving human race than the actual walking dead. That was the problem with humans; when things looked bleak, instead of coming together, they began to rip each other apart. When the walkers started decimating the city, it didn't take long for a gang of vile hooligans to band together and take advantage. They had no issue with abusing the already vulnerable people of this world. Stealing, vandalizing, looting, raping, killing... they did it all. Alesha had managed to avoid their grasp, but still had witnessed their crimes. Whenever she heard them approaching, her first instinct was to either run or hide.

She had, had a particularly close call only last week. She was out in the open, with no nearby buildings to shelter in. Alesha had heard their car engines and she knew that any minute they would find her. She couldn't fight, they always traveled in groups and she would have had no chance. So she had been forced to hide among a pile of dead bodies. Scrambling underneath the corpses, she had closed her eyes and pretended to be dead also. The smell of rotting flesh had been horrific and it had taken all of her willpower not to give herself away. Luckily the gang eventually moved on and after about half an hour, she had emerged. The woman had vomited for several minutes afterwards. Although she had been a nurse before the world had collapsed, it had made very little difference. Back then Alesha didn't exactly have to lie underneath decomposing bodies that were oozing God knows what out of God knows where. She had managed to find an abandoned motel and had sat in the shower for hours, simply sobbing. Even till now she felt that the smell was still on her.

The young woman was today held up in a building near some construction site. On her person she had only three items; a baseball bat, shortened javelin and a bag to keep them both in. No food, no keys to a car, no gun, nothing else that could possibly help her. Alesha lived day to day and often found whatever she needed from abandoned homes or stores. The temptation to overload her bag with food every time that she hit a goldmine was strong. However the extra weight slowed her down and made her an easier target. Better to go hungry for a couple of days and live, instead of die with a bag full of food. She had, had the good sense to arm herself fairly early on during the outbreak, her first instinct to grab herself a baseball bat. However she soon discovered that real life wasn't like the movies.

You needed to kill the brain of walkers in order to stop them. Something that was actually quite hard to do with a bat. She didn't have the strength required for the type of powerful swing needed to kill with one hit. So in the beginning she often found herself smacking them around the head, only to have them stumble slightly and then carry on towards her. One night she had sought shelter in her old high school and that's when she stumbled upon the javelins in the sports hall. She had taken a broken one on purpose, as it was easier to carry and use. The sharp, strong device got the job done when needed. Which actually wasn't as often as you might think. First rule of a zombie apocalypse, avoid fights! If you can get out of the situation without having to use a weapon, do it! She had survived this long by knowing when to run, not by stopping and attempting to kill everything in sight.

As Alesha was wandering around the business block, she could hear some commotion from outside. She didn't dare take a peek through the window though. If anyone saw her looking they would soon come running up here. So Alesha kept her head down and just waited for it all to be over. However her heart stopped when she could hear footsteps coming up the stairwell that lead into the building. Without hesitation she began to run. Reaching one of the back office rooms, she rushed inside and closed the door behind her. Her eyes began darting around for somewhere to hide. They landed on a large cupboard and she forced herself inside. Alesha gripped her bat so tightly that her hands began to hurt a little. She preferred to run, but if there was nowhere to go, then she had no choice but to fight. The bat wasn't great with walkers, but it might be enough to knock a human on their ass. Alesha's breathing became shallow and it almost stopped as she tried to be as quiet as possible. She was trembling slightly, her eyes wide and just hoping that the person wouldn't find her.

Scott once heard that these things could not walk up the stairs, so here he was running up the stairs with lungs burning and with each step he took, the more he thought he was going to puke. ‘Damn I need to get back into shape if I’m going to survive by running away from these things.’ he muttered half out of breath to himself. He continuously looked over his shoulder if fear that the rumor was just that a rumor, but as for the moment the rumor held true, which by all means was fine with him.

He toppled the last flight of stairs, which was a blessing in itself, but also what pleased him was that there was no walkers, at least where he has come to a stop. Bent over, hands upon his knees, he took a few huge inhales of air and slowly released it. Letting his fatigue to slowly falter away. At this moment he envied all those track and field stars, for right now they would have it made. Rolling his shoulders and shaking his legs out, he slowly stood up and walked over to the door. Slowly opening it.

The room was a large computer office type with all those particle walled cubicles. ‘Must be some sort of telemarketing company.’ He chuckled to himself, then shaking his head in dismay, ‘Like it really fucking matters what type of company it was. The only thing mattered was that there was no walkers or thugs in his immediate vicinity. He stepped into the large room and lowered himself down so he could listen for any of those weird noises that those walkers make or some loud mouth thug talking shit as they all do.

Upon nothing reaching his strained hearing, he slowly stood back up and walked down the far left side of the room. Looking in each of the cubicles for anything that could come in handy, ‘nothing’ he muttered to himself, then once again chuckled at himself, he was in a fucking computer company what the hell would they have to help with the world being full of man eating zombies!

He continued to make his way down until he came to another hallway that lead down to private offices. Still nothing he could use but there could be a comfortable sofa that he could use to get a good nights sleep. That sounded good to him so he slowly started to check each room looking for one that had a sofa in it.

There was nothing more unnerving than deathly silence, especially when you thought that your life might hang in the balance. Alesha's heartbeat was racing and her ears were being overwhelmed by the sound of rapid blood pumping through them. She attempted to steady herself, not wanting to become so consumed with worry that she'd accidentally do something to give herself away. She concentrated her listening, doing her best to try and hear what might be occurring in the other rooms.

It was all so very quiet, but every now and again she thought that she could hear footsteps, shuffling and the sound of doors being opened and closed. However even those noises were quite soft, which wasn't like the actions of the gang members. They were the type that would trash a building from top to bottom, screaming and swearing as they went along, taking glee in the destruction that they left behind. However Alesha still did not move, it was better to be safe than sorry.

There was an ever so small gap in the door of the cupboard. Allowing her to see out as she waited patiently for a sign that she was safe. After several minutes her body became tense as a man entered the room. He appeared to be unarmed but looks could be deceiving. For all she knew he could have a gun or knife hidden about his person. He also appeared to be alone, there was no one with him as he walked through the door and she couldn't hear any more movement from around the building. Was he with the gang? Were the rest of them waiting outside whilst he scoped the place out? It was an unusual approach for them, but maybe they were trying new tactics in order to find fresh victims?

So far Alesha was successfully managing to stay out of sight. However as she waited and prayed for the man to leave, she began to hear a creaking noise. She looked up in horror to see that the shelf of the cupboard was beginning to slip. 'No, no, no, no, no' she thought to herself. However there was nothing that she could do! All of a sudden; old files and boxes came tumbling down, crashing against the cupboard door and flinging it right open. Alesha stood there in shock, staring at the man. She gripped hold of her bat tightly and thrust it out in front of her. "St... st... stay back!" She said to him, attempting to sound assertive as her eyes darted to the door, yearning to escape.

Scott’s ‘Oh Fuck!’ corresponded with him almost jumping out of his skin when this crazy lady popped out of a storage cabinet holding a bat at him. “I’m not a walker!” No shit Sherlock she can see that, that’s not what she is holding a bat at you for moron!, “I’m not a timber wolf!” he instantly shot out after the little voice bashing he took. Sometimes he wished he would stop talking to himself, for he was always mean to himself, it was like that tv show called the odd couple between them.

His eyes locked onto the woman, “Look…” He lifted his shit to revel his waistline.. See no weapons.” He kept his hands up. “I’m just looking for a place to sleep for the night. There is a small horde of walkers at the bottom of the stairs.” He offered all the information he could thank of to this woman.

He did take note that she looked rather well, she must have had luck in finding enough food for herself. She seemed alert and fluid in her moments which was a good sign. Now all he had to do was get her talking and maybe she will calm down so he can calm down…

“My name is Scott. I’ve been on my own since the out break. How about you?” he hoped she was as civilized as she appears..

Alesha began to step gingerly towards the door, making sure to keep an eye out for any sudden movements from the male. He seemed extremely shocked by her sudden arrival. She watched as he began to try and explain himself, his hands up in the air as a sign that he had no intention of hurting her. Her face still held an expression of doubt and suspicion though. If the last six months had taught her something, it was that you couldn't trust anyone.

Alesha kept her gaze on him as he began to lift his clothes, showing that he was indeed unarmed. She peered around him slightly, trying to get a good look to ensure that he wasn't hiding anything down the back of his trousers. His hands didn't move other than that and he simply continued to keep on talking.

The woman took a few more steps away from him. Although to a degree, it was a good thing that he didn't have any weapons. The whole concept seemed suspicious to her. Who walked around in this day and age unarmed? With walkers and timber wolves around every corner?! How had this man survived this long without any way of defending himself? Unless it was all a trick and he didn't need weapons because he had back up? "You might not be armed... but that doesn't mean I can trust you." Her piercing gray eyes attempted to read his face. He seemed genuine, scared and alone like herself.

He explained why he had ran in here and then attempted to get to know her, by asking for her name and seeing if she was all alone. However Alesha found herself unable to answer, her face stuck in a look of horror. She almost hadn't heard his last sentence, as the words from his previous one were still ringing in her ears. The reason why he had run up here! "Did the walkers see you?!" Alesha asked in a panicked voice.

Scott watched the gray-orbed woman stare at him as if he was the antichrist himself. Her slowly movements toward the door told him that the only thing she wanted was to get away from here and him. He had no problem with that. So he allowed her to move toward the door as he moved in the opposite direction heading toward where she once stood. Hell, all he wanted was to find a damn sofa to sleep on, not some bat wielding manic who is just asking for trouble when you greet people with weapons at the ready. Hell, how did he know that she wasn’t with the timber wolves, playing the me so scared female to try and draw him or if he wasn’t alone his friends to an ambush point. Hell as she looked, she could show some skin and have followers to go wherever she wanted, maybe that would be her next move if this doesn’t work.

When she spoke of trust, “Hell who said I trust you. You could be playing a bimbo to lure me to an ambush point for the timber wolves. So just go there is the door. I wouldn’t take the south stairwell, that is where the horde is.” He waves his hand toward the go.. “Go, I would like to get on with my life instead of doing the two step with you.” He leaned up against the wall, rising his foot up to take some much needed pressure off of it.

When the look of horror locked upon her face and she fell silent for what seemed hours, Scott pushed himself off the wall and looked at her, “Hey are you okay?” Then her eyes looked up to his and asked a rather chilly toned question. He looked confused for a moment. “Yeah, but they cant climb stairs.” He said smiling as if he was the man whom held all the answers. “So we are safe, well I guess you are for your holding the damn bat.” His hands pointing at it then dropping to his side. ‘Look, its getting late and I really want to find a sofa to get some rest. So if you don’t mind…. SHOOO” he gestured toward the door again…

Alesha watched as suddenly, like a switch; Scott turned from being a cautious, concerned, fellow survivor who was attempting to allay her fears. Into a cocky, rude, know it all who decided to begin calling her a bimbo. Did this guy have split personality disorder or something? It seemed that his annoyance may have stemmed from her not co-operating in the way that he would have liked. Was he really going to get his panties in a twist, over her not instantly trusting him after only speaking for barely thirty seconds? This guy had issues, ones that she didn't have time to deal with right now. So she chose to ignore all of his illogical comments. Such as how she might have been here to lure him to the timber wolves. Yeah great theory, except that she was here first. She didn't come looking for him, he had stumbled onto her. Speaking of being here first, he then basically began demanding that she leave. Right, cause by walking on in here it meant that he automatically owned the place now, not.

She allowed him to finish his ridiculous rant, before simply continuing to stand there, dumbfounded. "Are you touched in the head?" She asked bluntly. So much bull crap had emitted from his mouth, that she wasn't sure where to start. So maybe it was best to just stick with the one thing that actually mattered. That particular sentence which had the ability of putting both of their lives in danger. "Walkers can't climb stairs? Where the hell did you dig up that pile of crap from? Of course they can climb bloody stairs!" Then right on cue, as if they had been waiting for the perfect introduction, a crashing noise sounded from the bottom of the stairwell.

Alesha's head whipped around to face the noise, before glancing back to Scott. All of the colour seemed to disappear from her face, she was clearly scared. Without hesitation, she ran for the door and began sprinting down the hall. The stairwell was like a cave, providing the perfect echo for whatever noise occurred within it. The snarls, grunts and groans made it perfectly clear; it was walkers coming up those steps, not timber wolves. "Damn it!" Alesha began to panic, her brain going at a million miles per hour instead of letting her focus on just one thing. Finally it hit her! "Fire escape!" She turned back around and as she ran past the door of the room that Scott was in, she stopped. "You still planning on staying?" Alesha asked, before continuing on to find which window the fire escape came up to.

Scott laughed out when she asked if he was touched in the head. His intentions of making her relax by being stupid had the wrong result. He sighed lightly with a shaking of his head in a nope fashion. ‘Just trying to get you out of here’ expression was on his face. He did, however, straightened up and became himself when she told him that they can. “What?” he asked in a completely different tone, “I have seen them attempt to climb stairs but didn’t for they lost their balance and fell so I assumed that they couldn’t.” He kept his voice down for he wasn’t sure anymore and didn’t want to attract anymore attention as he heard the same noise as she did coming from the stairwell. His eyes going wide, “Fuck me, and I thought I was safe for the night up here!” he shot a look at the woman only to see that she was looking at him with a pale look on her face.

“I’m sorry I ….” She was gone.. “Well hell!” he looked around the room for anything that he could use as a weapon, but there wasn’t anything that would have been proper, then he remembered that there had to be a fire extinguisher near one of the exits. They always had axes, he just had to get to one before those things got up here on this level. He moved to the door and looked to his left she wasn’t that way, and by the time he turned to the right she was in his face asking him if he was staying.

“Hell no!” Scott shot back as he followed her. “Hey have you seen a fire extinguisher station anywhere near by?” he asked as he was following the woman down the hallway. Her frantic search for something as she looked out multiple windows. “What are you looking for?” he asked somewhat lost. “We could always use the cargo elevator that the delivery men use to bring up supplies.” He added to the wind as she was off again and he was following her …
