    • Since ancient times, the ruler of Varando was chosen. Lineage did not affect who could become the King, but it did affect who was the King. To become the ruler, one had to be chosen by a relic known as the King's Stone. The tone was the size of a man's fist, seemingly made of gold, and as hard as a diamond. For some reason, the rulers that were chosen by the stone - usually stronger, healthy people - did not live long afterward. Because of this, there was constant competition for the stone, several large scale battle's were fought to obtain this precious stone. However, at some point in recent history, this stone disappeared. Why? Where it is now? No one knows such things.

Currently, there is no King. The kingdom is run by a council of elders who are fighting to maintain their order within the kingdom, keep invasions at bay, and trying to preserve their own lives. The lineage of the original royal family is near impossible to trace, as there is such a large gap in the records of the family lineage. What is known, is that there are two families that have remained close to the king as advisors over the years. Each of these families claims to have ties to the original royal family, and seek to prove this in any way that they can. Each consider finding the King's stone as the highest of priorities, as they each just know that the stone will recognize the strength of their royal blood and grant them the most coveted power in the world.

And they will do this by any means necessary.

In order to attain this power each of the families has been grooming their heirs to be worthy of the stone. Each of the heirs is currently attending Tarnesia Academy, a massive school that teaches magic to any and all, despite their own capabilities of use. The rivalry of the heirs is well known throughout the school, though it must be said that is is more of a. . .one sided conflict.

The heir to the Vaonda family, a young man by the name of Eton, wasn't so interested in this rivalry or making his family the seat of power. If anything, having that much power actually scared him a little. What were they going to do with it? They were the King's advisors! In a way, they were more powerful than the king himself! Well. . .they would be if there was one. Now that the elders were running things, his family had nothing to do other than plot the downfall of their longtime rivals. That was nothing but troublesome for him. To cope with the trouble, he began to act out. He fell in with the shadier crowd here at the school, preferring to go and enjoy meaningless flings with people he knows nothing of, and indulge in the use of magic-driven hallucinogens, to help his relax and unwind.

So far as he saw things, his life was going very well right now. In fact, he as all ready to partake in more of these wonder drugs after returning to the massive school campus from home along with his personal servant. The demon played with the small, pale blue, pebble size mass in between his thumb and forefinger passively. He knew that she didn't like it when he did these things, but honestly did not care what she thought of it. So long as it was able to keep him from thinking about all of his troubles, he would continue doing them. If something else came along that worked even better than the drugs? he would go to it. That was just the way that Eton functioned.

"What does my schedule look like today," he asked, the disinterest in his voice was more than apparent.[/list:u][/list:u]

"Try not to sound too enchanted by the thought of learning Eton, someone might think of you as an overachiever." Gael's dry sarcasm was the same as usual in response to her 'young masters' less than eager attitude towards...well everything.

In all her years of serving him, which had been decided at her birth actually, she had yet to see him interested in anything outside of where his next source of amusement was going to come from. He should be thankful that Gael was both patient and loyal, otherwise she may have begged her elders to free her from this position. Gael Kergio's family had served the Vaonda's as far back as when they held the throne and before, or so she had been told over and over. Along with tales of their great heritage and right to the throne, Gael suffered through lengthy speeches on loyalty and servitude, not that she hated it, she quiet enjoyed and was honored by the privilege of serving Eton and his family. She just did not find it necessary to be reminded of it every time she spoke with her own family, or gave report to Eton's family.

Now that they were both enrolled in the Academy Gael dealt less with their families and more with keeping Eton out of trouble. His abuse of magic along with his seedy band of new 'friends' was a constant strain on her sanity. He had tried every trick he could think of to get around her, some days he was successful but often she found out, much to his annoyance and his so called friends hated her for it. Gael did not care in the least, she had a duty to perform and they were in the way. It was a pleasure to ruin their plans and as of late she had become quite creative with it, mostly due to boredom. The Academy taught magic and she was well acquainted with the art, though the school did help her with a few of the more intricate dealings with magic.

"Your schedule looks the same as it always does. The real question is do you plan on sticking to it?"

    • Normally, Eton was stuck taking care of family business of some kind. They wanted him to do this, and do that, to do something to better the family's status. He wasn't concerned with such nonsense though. They were advisors to the king, they held one of the highest positions it was possible for a family to hold without being royalty. And so far as that matter went, he would have rather not been royalty. If that were the case, he would eventually end up being the next ruler, and that was something that he would have rather not had to deal with. Too much responsibility, to much stuff to do. He much rather would have liked to continue with his current life. Seeking enjoyment rather than having to worry about being responsible.

Gael seemed to be. . .less than pleased with his current lifestyle, which was understandable since it seemed to bring her nothing but trouble. He was always sneaking around, avoiding her and running off to do something. . .fun. Maybe a quick high, or a quick encounter with one of the various women around the Academy. Often times, he would joke about her needing an encounter or two of her own, to help her lighten up a bit. That was usually met with an angered or violent reaction from his servant though, so he was always careful to joke in such ways when he knew he could flee from her presence. "Not really, but you already knew that much didn't you," he said with a laugh. He was partially joking and partially series. Today wasn't one of the days where he felt like being in class.

When it came to fighting, he could win with just a weapon in his hand. He was just that good. Being at the Academy was a waste of his time really, but he was enrolled here to please his parents. Nothing more, and nothing less.[/list:u][/list:u]
