The grasslands spread out before her. Wind whistled in her ears over the steady beat of hooves and whipped around her so hard Liz had to use one hand to keep her hat on. She couldn't help but laugh. This...this was freedom. There was a copse of trees up ahead that looked to be near an actual forest. She turned Bo's head that way with a grin and started heading for the trees.

"Fuck!"

Liz had been nearly standing in her saddle and now fell back down in it, doubling over in pain. A bullet had lodged itself in her shoulder, having gone almost straight through and even now burning just under her flesh. She stuck her hand between the buttons in her shirt and felt the lump just under the skin and the warm lead. Uttering more obscenities under her breath, she heeled Bo more urgently towards the trees. Behind her three law men pursued and were gaining, bullets still flying. She pulled back the hammer on her own pistol and aimed haphazardly over her shoulder, surprised she actually hit one in the chest on her fourth round. One of the law men fell back to help their comrade, but the last pursued. Another bullet grazed her thigh, ripping through her only pair of pants and causing more cursing.

And then he was gone. At the absence of more bullets Liz managed to sit up in her saddle and twist to see where he'd gone. The lawman chasing after her had fallen back, as though there were an invisible wall that separated them. Frowning, she slowed Bo--who seemed grateful for the rest--and kept steering him for the trees. Liz realized she'd probably strayed into Indian territory, where white lawmen even wouldn't dare pursue her.

"Alright Bo," she panted, patting the stallion on the neck, "let's try to get outta here before anyone notices and we'll be home free."

The hot Nebraska sun beat down on her as they trotted along the tree line, causing sweat to drip down her skin and into her fresh wounds. As Liz hissed with pain Bo picked up his pace, seeming to know that she was in distress and needed help and soon. Though his ears turned back, he didn't give his rider any other indication that they were being watched.
