Shawna couldn't remember much as she sat on a hospital bed clad in just sweats and a t-shirt. Her naturally brunette hair was unkemptly pulled back in a ponytail. Her arms were wrapped in bandages and in a sling, stitches plus a bandage was above her right eyebrow. She had a busted lip and several bruises with little scratches. She didn’t look to hot.

The young girl was battered from a car crash that had killed her parents. Her parents were in the front of her father’s Chrysler 300. She was in the back seat so her location saved her life. They were on a freeway when a drunk driver was swerving and because her father had tried to quickly avoid hitting other cars they spun out going over a railing, down a small cliff to another back road. The impact from it had killed her parents, the car threw Shawna around but she was sparred thanks to the bulkiness of the car. Maybe sparred because of a miracle. Not even air bags could have saved her parents after the impact that had hit the front of the car.

Ambulance, firefighters and police rushed to the scene and two firefighters pulled her out. She was unconscious by the time she was rescued. All she would remember is moments before the vehicle spun out off the freeway. Luckily she didn't require any major surgery just stitches here and there and resetting her arm. Her older brother Jack was notified. At the time he was doing 3rd shift in an ER at Mercy Hospital on the other side of town when he had someone call in and he left to get to his younger sibling.

Jack being in the medical profession was easily given access to her medical records. He was relieved his sister only suffered minor injuries as the chief of surgery told him that is parents were announced dead on site. He about broke down but kept together long enough to see his sister unconsciousness in her room resting, unaware of the horror she was about to wake up too.

"And that's a wrap fellas" said Jack as he walked out of the room to take of his scrubs and sanitize himself, he had just done an emergency surgery to a man whose feet had no blood flow do to swelling, thankfully they were able to restore the flow before amputation was an option, he was in the main hallway when he saw a nurse running up to him to give him the dire message, he had seen death in his operating table, he was used to it, but the knowledge of his parents and sister dying in such a horrible way hit him hard.

However before he could breakdown he got the news about his sister, he was able to get a leave and rushed to the hospital his sister was staying at. It wasn't as big as the one he practiced but it was closer to the scene. He managed to acquire information and access hanks to his connections at said hospital. Walking into the room he expected the worse but what he saw made him give a loud sigh of relief and a small sob, his sister was alright, bruised and beaten but alright.

He sat besides her caressing her hair, remembering all the times they played and even fought when she was a child. His parents were entering their 50's when they conceived Shawna, do to their age he pretty much took the task of raising her however she was now the only family he had albeit he had his fiancee but that was another relation. After a while he stood up and began to pace the room not knowing how to reveal that their parents were no more.

Shawna two days later finally came to consciousness. Her eye’s fluttered struggling to stay open as her mouth was parched. Her lips were already busted so being chapped only made them worse. She started coughing and leaned over feeling her head get light headed. Jack was up and by her side in no time and gently held her back down instructing her to take deep heavy breaths and to inhale through her nose. She wheezed as her nostrils flared, her chest heaved in and out until she felt her lungs get air and she relaxed watching him open a bottle of water. She slowly let him hold it up to her mouth; she grabbed it with her un-inured arm and gulped it down. She handed it to Jack while adjusting her eye site. She was in a private hospital room with flowers and balloons everywhere; cards were also set up on the tables. It didn’t take her long to remember moments before the crash and her eye’s got beady as Jack let his hand intertwine with hers in a strong squeeze.

She looked at her brother and saw his face and her own dropped of any expression. He laughed out hysterically shaking his head, a habit he had when he was trying to say something he didn’t know how.

“Shawn---“ Shawna squeezed his hand and shook her head as her eye’s swelled with burning tears.

“No,” she demanded, “No…..stop…..just stop.” She said with hot silent tears coming down her cheeks, she already knew. She knew from how many flowers, and sympathy cards were in the room, she knew because they would have been in the room if they were ok. She saw her own brother who was a grown man form tears and she looked away trying not to show the pain. She rolled over on her side, letting her back face him. She breathed out slowly as more hot tears came.

He frowned as he saw his sister in such a state, crying over the loss of their parents. He knew he couldn't tell her to no cry so he did the only thing he could and stroked her back and shoulder softly. Unknown to her he hadn't gone home, having been sleeping in the room waiting for her to awaken. "Shawna..I know this is not the time to say this..but..since..dad and mom are no longer here..you will be living with me once you are released." he explained to her seeing how she turned around and looked at him. There was no way he would let her be alone, not not when she was the only thing he had.

Soon the food arrived and he moved her bed up so she could eat. "Shawna you have to eat..you know they wouldn't want you to be like this.." he explained with a forced smile wanting her to feel assured. He stayed with her throughout her recovery, but not once did his fiancee come visit to ask how she was doing. Not once did she send a flower or a letter, he excused it as her being too busy with her work. Soon after Shawna was released, still weak he brought her to his house against her objection. When they arrived the face of his fiancee was brilliant and happy however the moment he revealed that Shawna would stay with them it changed into something of disappointment and disgust, however it was too quick for him to notice, but Shawna did..

Even though she hadn’t ate in two days she was far from hungry. She nodded to the nurse and shook her head and pushed the tray away looking up at Jack. He gave her a concerned look and sighed and she leaned back now that she was sitting upright in the hospital bed. She had a couple of IV’s hooked to one arm and had monitors hooked to her underneath her hospital clothing.

When he mentioned living with him and of course that meant living with Sarah she frowned and tried not to let more tears come. The last thing she wanted was to intrude on her older brother and his soon to be wife, the last thing he needed was a teenager in the house. She assumed in another year or so he would be a father himself. Shawna came from a wealthy family; hell both her older brother and her father were surgeons. It was kind of the family’s nature. They had encouraged her to go into the medical field but she hadn’t really decided if that was the route she wanted to go, but she did already have training to be an STNA and had worked part time at a local nursing home in the past two summers.

“There’s enough money left for me to it least rent a small apartment or efficiency for a year….I could work full time and get ready for college. I don’t need too---“ Jack gave her a look that told her it was useless to keep trying, he had control of her money and would for four years. It wasn’t that he didn’t want her to be independent or have her own place but the fact he wanted to watch over her, help her with her first few years of college, make sure she was on the right track. She sighed slouching back.

Jack’s phone went off and she watched him look at it and answer it walking outside of the room and she leaned her head watching the nursing and staff walk back and forth in the hallway.

He returned with a smile. "I talked it over with Sarah and she said it was ok, she did argue a bit but you know how she is" he said his face looking radiant and refreshed. He wanted to protect her, to help her, in a way it would feel like he was sheltering her but he had to remind himself that it was just till she was able to stand on her own two feet. After a few weeks Shawna was released with a sling in to hold her healing hand which had fractured in two places.

When they got home Sarah greeted her warmly, yet at the same time there was a feeling of unwelcomeness, it was as if Shawna's presence was detrimental to their relationship. Jack went up to show her to the attic which he had remodeled into a guest room months prior. They slept in the ground floor so she would have her own privacy.

"Think of it as living in a small apartment yet your neighbors are close" He explained hoping she would become enamored with the idea. "I brought your computer from home I'l set it up after we have dinner" he said as he saw how she looked around. "Or perhaps you want a shower to cool off?" he said knowing she hadn't had one since her time in the hospital, she had just had sponge bath's by a nurse and nothing else.

Shawna stayed downstairs lounging around in the living room while Sarah started dinner, she would listen to them whisper now and then and it sounded like Jack was a little upset and he was. The funeral was planned to be on Sunday and it was Tuesday and Sarah already had a business trip planned and apparently she couldn’t get time off. Jack was trying to reason with her without actually arguing since Shawna was around but she decided to act out being more exhausted than she was so she could get the hell away from them. Jack followed her down the hall toward the stairs and she looked back up at him with a look that asked to be left alone.

“I got it.” She snapped. “I’m tired…. I’ll be fine. I just need rest.” She said and started making her way up the stairs. The upstairs was pretty nice; you couldn’t even tell it was an attic. It was more it less just the 3rd level of there town house. It even had its own bathroom with a shower. It had a queen sized bed and a nice bedroom suit. She could easily turn it into her own bedroom. It was even nicer than what she had at home, which was smaller. It even had a skylight. Right now it was dark and cloudy. There were a few duffle bags and boxes of stuff Jack had packed for her. He was in the process of packing the rest of her stuff and was going to take her in the house after she rested up more. She was to lazy to shower and crawled up on the bed pulling the covers back and dimmed the lights.

Her life had changed in a matter of seconds, now she was parentless at the age of seventeen and now in her brother’s care. She could hear distant yelling down stairs but couldn’t make out what it was and ignored it.

It didn't take long for Sarah to leave after the fight had started, it wasn't like her business trip was important. It was just some dresses for the wedding which got him quite upset, she could wait. The wedding was postponed anyways do to the accident. He sighed and went to make himself a cup of coffee but then thought about it and decided to make two.

Carrying the steamy mug he climbed the stairs up to the basement and called out. "Shawna would you like some hot cocoa?" she loved it as a child and all through her life so he knew she would probably say yes if she was awake. It was one of the loves they shared. He stood in front of the door waiting for an answer hoping she would open up, he didn't want her to start shutting herself and become a recluse.
