"No, I didn't mean a glass, I meant the bottle. No, leave it, bring the bottle too." The bartender gave a grunt, slight glare, and turned to walk away. The man sitting on the stool who'd ordered the bottle watched him walk away, then looked down to stare into the brown liquid in the glass before him. There were lots of reasons why one might be burying themselves in the drink, and like many others, Eric Winters was there because of the job. Others might be there because they were sick of their job, they had a long day or something, hated their boss, or whatever. Eric had a bit more to be brooding about, one of his best friends had been killed, a bullet to the head. He was stuck in this part of the grieving process because he'd been the one to do it, shot her in the head with a silver bullet, killed her because of what she'd become.

That image would never leave his head. Seeing her in the alley, the two bite marks on her neck. Blood trickling down to the dirty asphalt, her pale skin starting to move as she stood up, looking like death. Red eyes staring back at him with hunger, nothing else behind them. He'd raised his pistol and fired, the silver round flying and hitting her in the head, and she'd toppled over. Suddenly, wham, he was without a partner, waiting on doing any missions until he could be assigned another. Two of their rules, the Code of the Hunters. Never hunt alone, and kill all vampires, no matter what. The last one was more of a personal thing, but she hadn't been able to comply and kill herself, being Compulsed by the one who'd turned her. That's what alcohol was for though, the scotch helping as he sipped, the bartender finally getting the bottle and setting it down next to him.

The scene wasn't completely sad though. Eric wasn't just here to drown himself in booze and grieve until he passed out. It was finally time for him to get back into it, with another partner. They were meeting here, to see each other for the first time, get to know each other. Eric wasn't exactly looking forward to it. The Hunters were spread thin nowadays, and his brand new partner was just that, brand new. Fresh out of training, and he got to be the one to give her the real training. Exercises and lectures couldn't prepare you for what it was really like, the 'on the job' training was where you really learned. Lucky him.
