James woke up with a pounding headache. He had drunk too much the night before. As he sat up in bed he rubbed his eyes and attempted to get his bearings in his new home. Everything he brought with him on his move across country was strewn throughout the house in packing crates.

James is thirty-four years old but can pass for younger. His hair is a naturally curly, dark brown and is kept neatly short. His normally blue eyes are bloodshot at the moment. He stands up out of the bed dressed in boxers. Stretching he feels like an MMA fighter had worked over his well kept five feet ten inch body. Walking into the bathroom he looks at himself in the mirror. Shaking his head in disgust at the sight of his bloodshot eyes with bags under them and the stubble on his face. He splashes some water on his face before brushing his teeth; trying to get the awful taste of the night before out of his mouth.

After scraping the foul taste out of his mouth he goes into the kitchen of the large split-level house he has purchased. It is too large for a single man, but it was part of a former dream. He and his late wife Mandy had dreamed of a house like this before the tragic car crash that had ended her life. He had bought the house after stumbling upon it while on a working trip across the country. Deciding to run away from memories of his life with his wife in the city he bought the house located in the mountains. He was hoping the solitude would help heal his pain. But he also continued to turn to the bottle for help; to no avail.

Preparing a pot of coffee he then pours a cup and sits on the couch in the living room. Boxes are strewn everywhere. On the coffee table that is covered with several empty beer bottles; he reaches for and finds a pack of cigarettes. Lighting one he grabs the TV remote and clicks on the morning news. Well it wasn’t really the morning news; it was the noon news since he was sleeping off the drunk from the night before when the morning news was on. In a way it was his morning news because he was too hung over a lot lately to see the morning news.

Realizing what the date was James curses under his breath. Today was a day he was dreading. His older sister had volunteered her daughter’s services to help get his house together. He suspected that his sister was doing it to get the girl out of her hair than to be helpful. After all, the large age difference between James and his sister meant that they weren’t real close growing up. He hadn’t seen his niece since she was a small girl at his and Mandy’s wedding. He didn’t know why he told his sister OK when she suggested it; but he had. He had been told by his sister that his niece would be a great hand to him and was quite the beautiful girl. She also hinted that since he was a professional photographer that maybe he could take some photos of her and maybe have some friends look at them since he had connections in the modeling business. He hadn’t bothered to tell his sister that his work had changed slightly over time and he was taking a bit of a sabbatical, but decided he would figure something out as he thought quickly on his feet.

Again muttering a curse under his breath for giving in to this intrusion he heads back to his bedroom. Once there he pulls a wrinkled pair of camo cargo shorts on along with a Hard Rock Café t-shirt he picked up on one of his many business trips. After sliding on a pair of flip-flops he then heads back to the kitchen for another cup of coffee and a cigarette. While there he notices a vehicle pulling up his long dirt driveway. Deciding it must be her he takes his coffee and cigarette out onto the large porch in front of the house to meet his young niece for the first time in years.
