Alright, so welcome to the Night Land OOC! Here we will discuss the land we will be exploring and map out the course of our journey. To begin, let's explain a little about the Night Land itself. I will try to keep things organized in this first post, so that all and any information you need will be easily accessible.

The setting: thousands of years in the future after the sun has died. It is so far into the future that these people consider stories of the "Days of the Darkening" in the same way that we today think of stories of creation. Everything that exists in this world - the neverending night, the Redoubt, the monsters in the night land - have been with our characters for generations; it's all they've ever known and it is a fact of life. All we know about the past(our modern days right now) have been passed down in ancient tomes that fill the libraries in the cities of the Redoubt but not all of us are well-versed in this history.

Some people are gifted with special abilities(empaths, psychics, precogs, telekinesis). Not everyone has them but it is considered normal when these gifted individuals show up in society. Oftentimes, these people will hold a special place of power in the Redoubt as the abilities help defend against the creatures that prey on us from the darkness.

All of us have been trained in physical combat and the use of weapons, as a necessary skill in case of attack. The weapons we use will be hybrids of technology, the most notable being the diskos.

The diskos is a weapon featuring a razor-sharp spinning disk on a retractable handle. When activated the disk glows and shoots out sparks. It is also indicated that the diskos develops a special affinity for its owner during training and should not be handled by anyone else. (I am very open to the input of other forms of technology and weaponry if you'd like to include it but just ask first. )

The Great Redoubt

The role-play will be set outside of the Redoubt but I'll give a small explanation of it. Basically, it's a huge pyramid that houses all the cities and farmlands of the last of humankind. It was built over a crack in the earth and everything is powered by the Earth Current that comes up from the crack. Surrounding the pyramid is a brightly lit light circle that acts as an electrical fence and keeps the monsters outside at bay. The creatures fear the touch of the electric light so very few come near it and those that do, they don't try to cross it.

A few key points: each city is on a different level of the pyramid and has it's own mayor. The entire pyramid is ruled by a counsel consisting of the mayors from each city.

The top of the pyramid is an observatory with powerful telescopes that are used to observe and record the goings on of the outside world. They also use machinery that monitors the vibrations of the world and makes note of any unusual frequencies - it's like a radio and like a radio, sometimes certain things cannot be heard by human ears. Thus, they employ psychics who have the gift of Hearing who can hear the lower frequencies and the "voices" of those calling out in the night.

The Monsters

Eldritch abominations. Giant humanoid beasts. Demonic hounds the size of horses. Abhumans - humans that have lost their souls and prey upon others trying to fill that aching hole. The Silent Ones - cloaked wraiths that wander on the Road that leads to the Silent House on the Hill.

All of them prey upon humans that wander out of the Redoubt. Some of them - the abhumans in particular - have psychic ability and sometimes call out to those in the Redoubt, pretending to be lost loved ones and kin, trying to lure people out of the safety of the pyramid. Some fall for it and get destroyed. One way to tell for sure if they are a monster or not is to call out the "Master-Word" - a secret password that the soulless creatures are unable to utter. If the voice does not say the word back, then they are known to be one of the creatures in disguise.

The Landscape

This is going to be pretty much a free-for all. I am up for people's input and suggestions as far as what we find. The only thing to remember is that the sun is dead, so there is very little plant life remaining. But the abandoned cities might still be standing. And there is the Silent House on the Hill - a dark house with only the lights from the windows showing; anyone who goes in has never come out. There are plenty of things to explore in this craggy, desolate place.

The Quest

Out from the Night Land a voice is heard calling for help. One of the psychics in the Observatory hears it and makes contact, asking for the Master-Word to be repeated. The Master Word is said! Now things get serious. The child is being held captive by a group of abhumans but before he can give any more details the contact dwindles to silence. After more pleas for contact are met with silence, it is decided that the child is surely dead. Then a weak voice vibrates through the aether! The Master-Word is whispered to the psychics in the Redoubt! More often than not, more attempts to contact the boy are met with silence but every now and again, his voice pulses weakly the Master-Word and urges someone to hurry and save him.

A group of adventurers is assembled. Fit men and women ready to brave the horrors of the Night Land to save the child before he dies... or worse!

Alrighty! So that is the Night Land! If you have any questions, just ask. We'll gather up the character sheets and once we have everyone settled in the group, we'll start posting! Here is the character profiles thread.

Things might go a little slow with this because I've been going through a divorce and trying to find a new place to live. But I will keep everyone in the loop and try to post as often as I can.
