Back in middle school, Emma began babysitting. Her neighbor had a cute and often she babysat him while they went off on little dates. She loved taking care of the kid, sometimes pretending he was her own when she fed, cleaned and changed him and to her, it was like playing house but for the big kids. She watched him grow up, changing interests from singing stuffed animals to race cars to superheros. Often she had taken it upon herself too look into the same interests and they became the best of friends over the latest cartoons.

Emma was always told by his parents how she was a natural caregiver and throughout her high school years, that is what helped her decide on pursuing a career in medicine in hopes to help others. When graduation day came it was a little heart wrenching. She was going to have to spend many years away at collage. She wondered just how that kid could get along without her? Well, he was growing out of needing a babysitter, eventually such a relationship would have to come to an end.

For the first few years of collage they did keep some contact via telephone and e-mail. She would ask about school and his friends in the end and slowly their contact dwindled to nothing. She became far too busy with her studies to even contact her own family in the end. Even late she still thought about the other time to time, wondering what kind of guy he was turning into, if he still had the same childish interests she would always entertain.

Last year she had graduated from collage receiving her doctorate in medicine. She had been working as a nurse for a few months at a hospital near the collage as she made preparations to move back home. Now she lives in a small apartment downtown near a hospital she works for in the ER.

It was New Years Eve and the usual parties were taking place, on most occasions she would have gone to a friends house for a wild dancing party but having just returned home only months before, she wanted to see how all her old neighbors and family friends were doing. The people she babysat for were holding their yearly party and as always her parents were attending, this year she decided to tag along.

Emma wore a loose cream sweater with grey leggings and a dark grey snowflake design. She wore her favorite fluffy brown boots and a beanie she tucked most of her blonde hair into. Together she walked with her father between her and her mother and his arms around their waists holding them close in the cold weather.

John sighed as he looked around his living room. His parents were organising their annual party for family and friends, and he never knew anyone. Every year he wished that his old babysitter came, as he felt like she was - and still is - his best friend. He had stopped wishing a few years ago though, knowing that it would never happen.

He finally got up and was told to help sort out everything, and help his father with the snacks. "Hey John.. Your mother wanted me to keep this as a surprise for you, but I think you should know" His father started saying. He always liked his dad, so hopefully this is something John would be interested in. "Check the guest list" He told him, handing the list to him.

He rolled his eyes, starting to think this was another job, but he roamed his eyes down the list.

Dan Wilkens.. 'Emma's Dad. He usually comes to these events. Not unusual.' He thought to himself.

Helen Wilkens.. 'Emma's Mum. Also comes to these events quite often.'

Emma Wilkens.. 'Wait, what? Emma's coming! Jeez, I need to prepare.' He thought happily and urgently. He gave the list back to his dad "Thanks dad! I need to go and change" He said and ran off.

John ran up the stairs, changing into his best clothes. Most the people that came to these events were adults, so he would be one of the only kids there. The oldest kid there anyway. He came back down a little while later and saw the party was about to start; the guests were about to arrive!

His mother told him to greet the guests, take their coats and tell them where to go. He happily obliged for the first time in ages, knowing this will make sure he won't miss Emma.

As they headed up the steps to the other's house, they met up with other guest arriving. Phillip Tailor, a long time friend of both families smiled warmly at the family "Dan you lucky dog, a beautiful lady on each arm, this time you have to let me in on your secret." Emma smile taking the man arm and looping her own around it "It's alright Phil, you can always escort me around whenever you like now that I'm back in town." She laughed as together they walked up the front steps and rang the doorbell. Phil smiled patting her arm "Emma sweetheart there is so much I want to ask you but I'm sure first off your going to want to see how Johnny boy is doing." She smiled up at the man as if he had been reading her mind.

When the door opened she was expecting to see the same boy she left, short, sweet and lovable. Her jaw did a quick drop and she turned it into a smile as she released Phil's arm "Johnny is that you?" She asked. Short was not the word to describe him as now they could see eye to eye, if not her having to look up just a bit. "Wow, I wasn't expecting you to turn into a handsome man while I was away at collage but I guess you can't be young forever." she said as she eyed him up and down. Handsome was the beginning of various words she could use to describe his new appearance.

Emma stepped inside and out of the doorway. Her own appearance hadn't changed to much in years since they last met, having finished maturing physically years ago. "It's good to actually get to see you again. How have you been since we last spoke?" she asked trying to remember when they last talked.

John watched as guests entered and finally saw his ex-babysitter. At first he was excited and happy, but then he saw that she was holding onto another man's arm. His eyes drooped a little sadly and he tried unsuccessfully to hid it. "Emma? It is great to see you" He smiled a little shyly.

He blushed a little bit at her complements "I am hardly handsome" He told her quietly. He badly wanted to hug her, but he nervously just held a hand out for her to shake. "I have been alright. A bit lonely, as I still am quite bad at making friends" He had about 1 or 2 "And my best friend left for college." He finished "Don't worry, I don't blame you." He smiled slightly.

"So how have you been since we last spoke? It has got to be years since the last time" He said. It had been even longer since he had saw her, and he felt like his heart thumping heaps in his chest would be obvious. It wasn't, but his shyness and blush were.

Emma laughed "Geez, no need to act like a stranger, I've known you too long for that." She said as she wrapped her arms around him in an embrace and adding a small peck on his cheek. When she did so she could feel the warmth of his skin under her lips and she smiled. Emma felt pretty bad after hearing of the other's loneliness, she gave him a big squeeze before letting go. "Sorry, but now collage is over and I'm here to stay." She said with a small smile in hopes to comfort the other a bit.

She nodded her head "Too long is all I know. I've been good, perhaps I would have been lonely as well if it weren't for my dearest textbooks." Emma had been starting to get depressed at the end of her schooling, the first three years were fun, she had some roomies that she went to a few parties with but after that she became more serious about her education, she first lost contact with her old friends, john and then her own parents. Emma became a studying machine "I guess it was worth it though because I was third in my class and I got the job I wanted right away."

"Hey, were are your parents? I haven't even said hi to them yet." She said as the though had just occurred to her. They were good friends of hers as well and the hosts of the party. "I don't want them to think I had forgotten all about them." She said with a smile.
