The Fortunate Mortal (dando20 and Frogger)

"No, you won't be in any trouble...but I most likely will." Sophia's dark blue eyes rose up to the sky, a whirlwind of emotions playing in those depths, and then a sigh escaping her lips. "My father will not be pleased... In fact, he will be very angry... I told him I will learn the ways of the mortals, and without revealing my true nature... I never expected to break my promise, however..." It will be unfortunate if she has to return to Olympus, when she has only begun to see what it is like to live as a mortal.

Dane was shocked, not wanting Sophia, or rather Athena, to leave him. He quickly grabbed her hand almost crying. "Nonono..I'm so stupid..I..I don't mean to ruin your life here for u..I..I'm so sorry.." Dane said sincerely.

Sophia offered him a sad smile. "Don't be sorry, Dane. It's not your fault... I should have been more careful, I should have...hidden that painting, or gone to other means to hide who I am. You are not stupid...in fact, you are quite intelligent, since you connected the dots early. However...I may still have to leave, if my father wishes it..."

Dane sighed in a sad tone. He didn't even notice that the fireworks were over and people were leaving. "Well..since this might be our last night together..there is..one thing I have to do.." Dane said. He took up all of his courage and leaned forward to kiss the deity on the lips, the one thing he has always wanted to do. After 5 seconds, Dane pulled back showing a sad smile. "I..I love you, Sophia.." Dane admitted.

"You...You can't possibly mean that, Dane... We just met not too long ago..." Sophia felt a dark blush rise to her cheeks, only to reside there for who knows how long. A hand rose to her lips, fingertips brushing the soft flesh. "I...I doubt tonight will be our last night... Father might understand...or I might be able to convince him to let me stay... Either way...I might be able to stay..."

"I hope so..and..sorry..I didn't mean to upset u..I..I just wanted to do that for some time now..ever since you invited me in..I..I don't know if what I feel is love..but..I really want to be with you.." Dane said, truly meaning every word. He was still holding her hand.

Sophia bit her lip, finally revealing a tiny bit of nervousness that was churning inside her stomach. "You...You didn't upset me... and I want to be able to stay, too. I have finally made a life for myself here...one that has nothing to do with my abilities as a goddess. I would like to continue it, if I can..." Her eyes rose to his, light making the pair shine.

"Me too..so..All the stories you said about living with your family...they were really..." Dane paused wanting for Sophia to finish the thought.

"The stories about my family are true...and not true. I did exclude a few parts here and there, to keep my nature secret. I hardly spent any time with them as a child...and as an adult. My brothers have their own lives...while I have mine." Sophia slowly began to rise, already gathering their things together. "The fireworks are over... We should probably head back. We both have work to do tomorrow..."

"Oh right...Umm...Thanks for coming with me.." Dane said a bit sad as he got up, packing up the mat and opened the car door for Sophia. "So...I assume you still want to be called Sophia?" Dane said a bit teasingly, trying to ease the tension.

Sophia gave him a smile, one less sad...but still a little bit nonetheless. "You can call me whatever you wish...but if you do start calling me by my proper name, don't make a habit of doing so in public... It would be...difficult to explain, if someone overhears." Her hand brushed his, only to give his shoulder a soft pat before she climbed into the car.

Dane got in the driver seat and got on to driving back home. "So...I suppose it make sense that the goddess of wisdom would want to live as a teacher." Dane realized.

"It does..." Sophia's lips curved into another smile, hands brushing over her jeans. A few strands of gold fell to lay against her cheeks. "I have always wondered what it was like, living as a mortal...so I asked Father if I could. He didn't have any objections, as long as I didn't reveal my existence to anyone. So...I am a teacher."

"But...didn't you miss being with your brothers and sisters?...or being a goddess?" Dane asked.

Sophia leaned back in her seat. "I do miss my brothers and sisters, but as for being a goddess...not necessarily. No one needs me anymore. The age of the gods is over. There are no prayers being sent up to any of us, and there are no temples in our name. So...we have come to adopt to your age. I do wish I can talk to Artemis every once in a while...yet that isn't possible, what with us doing...what we do. I hate disturbing any of them."

"I see..wait!..the lady I delivered pizza to earlier...that was Artemis?!" Dane realized in shock.

"It was, Dane. That is one of my sisters. I rarely see her, but it seems like she already knows of our friendship...and even approves of it." Sophia let loose a soft laugh, shaking her head.

"Well..it was good that I didn't piss her off then, hehe" Dane said. Soon enough the two reached home. Dane opened the door for Sophia and escorted her back to her apartment. "So...umm.. guess..this is..good night...I hope to see you again.." Dane said, feeling hopeful.

Sophia took out her keys. "We will see each other again, Dane... Don't worry about that. Anyway... How about we meet again here in the next few days? We should make plans... Um, well, good night..." With a smile, she leaned forward, giving him a soft kiss on the cheek.

Dane touched the cheek that was just kissed, surprised that she gave him a kiss this time...A goddess giving him a kiss. He almost fainted if not the fact he was still maintaining his cool after this whole event. "Umm..yeah..good night" Dane smiled waving at the beauty.

"Good night, sweet dreams." Sophia gave him a shy smile this time, her keys jingling against the knob as she unlocked it. With a creak she opened the door, letting herself inside. "Give me a call tomorrow... We should make plans."

"Umm..yeah..we should...night" Dane said shyfully as he went thorough his door. He waved at her as she went inside her apartment while doing the same.

Sophia retreated into her apartment. It wasn't long before she was in bed, thoughts going over the day's events over and over again. Her eyes grew heavy, however, these thoughts turning into dreams... In this state, she was like an angel, her golden curls spread out over the pillow.
The next day was rainy, with little chance of sun. Hours crawled on, before finally four o'clock arrived. It was then that Sophia can start heading home. An umbrella raised high above her head, she ran out to the bus station, heels clicking and splashing puddles. The bottom of her jeans grew wet, her white shirt not faring much better.

Dane, despite thinking that he is living next door to a literal goddess, concentrated on the day's work and lectures. He wanted to make himself more worthy of the beauty that he was lucky enough to meet. He just hope that her revealing her true self didn't mean he won't be able to see her again.

After his classes he rode off home to get ready for work. He wasn't looking forward in delivering in this rainy day. He hoped that he would meet Sophia before he left.

Sophia looked up at the sky, a thoughtful look in those dark grey eyes. "Father is not pleased..." she mused, not blaming him for a second. Gods and goddesses were separate from mortals for a reason... not because if can be done. Skirt dripping, she waited for the bus with the patience of a saint... to no avail. "Did I miss it?" she wondered, glancing at her watch.
