"Any more questions? Very well. Enjoy your holidays, children. Class dismissed."

Irene sat down at her desk while the students all but stampeded out of the room, the sudden burst of buzzing chatter and earsplitting yells breaking the earlier dead silence. Today was the last day of school, as Christmas vacation was starting tomorrow. Indeed, even as she had been giving the class some last-minute announcements for next year, she was aware of their fleeing attention and their eyes flitting to the clock above the board, waiting for time to tick to the end of this year's school days. She watched them go, giving out a quiet sigh while she turned to the exam papers she needed to check. Unlike them, her job was still not quite done. And to make matters worse, recently something very important came up, something she was sure would be taking up the whole of her vacation.

Her phone rang. It was her mother.

"Hey, Mom. How was your visit with Harold?"

She still could not believe that her brother would do something like that. Harold never showed any signs of coming to the point of extreme despair that he would commit several robberies just to get money. He had a job that gave him more than enough. His fiance earned just as much, and they could support at least two children with their earnings taken together. So why? When she had talked to him, he told her he did not know what he was doing, but who could believe something like that? Only someone not in their right mind would ever commit a crime and not know about it--and Irene was sure her brother was mentally healthy.

Gathering her things, Irene stuffed the bundle of papers in her file folder and exited the room, heels clicking against the floor and the soft breeze from the window brushing the bare skin on her shoulder and making her shiver. She hated layered clothing and avoided the style like a plague, but admittedly the gradual fall in temperature had been killing her this whole afternoon. She made her way to the faculty office to clean up her desk and time out. Her jacket was hanging from her chair, too.
