Clad in only goggles, a black Speedo, and a cap Nathan Varner let the buoyancy of the water keep him afloat until he was virtually weightless. That’s how the twenty year old felt whenever he cut through the water with his body. It was one of the reasons Varner had even picked up the sport. He’d always been athletic, participating in soccer and lacrosse like many of the New England boys in his high school but when he got to college he thought he’d try something new. There was something about swimming that he just loved. Whether it was the feel of the water caressing his body, cooling it down, or the being able to feel the strength of his own body, he just couldn’t leave it alone. So when the opportunity to compete on a team presented itself, he couldn’t really pass it up. He had enough natural talent in the water to place on the team and with a lot of hours and help from the coach he’d managed the title of Rookie of the Year his freshman year. Swimming had become his addiction.

It was why he was there at 5 in the morning doing laps and practicing his backstroke when everyone else was in a sleep induced coma. The coach had given him free access to the pool as long as he left the school the way it was before he came in. Nathan knew his coach was breaking some rule, but he gave him the keys anyway. Nathan couldn’t help himself though. At 5’9” and weighing in at only 153 lbs, he was smaller than most of the guys on the team. As a result, he was always trying to make his reach farther and his pace faster. He’d been told time and time again that he didn’t need to gain much more weight, that being bulky would only hinder him, etc and after a while he finally listened but that didn’t change the fact that he was grudgingly self conscious about it, especially when the top swimmers on his team easily outweighed him. In the end, he attributed it only training his body in swimming for just under two years. It was harder to gain muscle…right?

It was around 7:30 when Nathan finally started to wind down, letting himself just float along as he caught his breath. He had class in two hours and being late wasn’t an option. He was just as meticulous about his classes as he was with swimming. Those who knew him well enough made fun of him for it even giving him the name “Vigilant Varner.” It caused most people to think he had a stick up his ass but it really wasn’t the case. He was that guy you could do anything with whether it was going to some party, talking shit, or jumping off a cliff into some random body of water in the middle of the night. The only catch was he needed to be done with his homework and practice. Call him a nerd but he couldn’t really say he gave two shits one way or another. It was how he did things and you took him as he was or you didn’t take him at all.

A feeling of tiredness was starting to come over him the longer he waded in the pool so he made his way over to the ladder and climbed out before he ended up falling asleep…and not for the first time in his life. Anyone who said you couldn’t fall asleep in water was clearly wasn’t doing it right. Grabbing his towel off the floor he pulled his cap and goggles off before making his way toward the locker rooms to shower. He’d be back in the water again for practice but walking around smelling like chlorine wasn’t really a plan.
