Busy Nights (darkangel76 and me)

Tiernann didn’t stop for a moment, not a single hesitation or pause. She even refused to glance behind herself. She could hear the others there and that was enough for her. Because at that moment, her only focus was getting back to Braden to help him. She knew the odds he was facing weren’t in his favor. Though she knew him to be the sort to not give a shit about that and do what needed to be done regardless of odds.

Tamping down all sense of panic and keeping her cool, Tiernann approached the area the humans had been held not all that long ago. She saw the open sewer and bit down on her lip. It was heavily guarded by the filthy things. Scowling, she turned to look at the others that were with her.

“There’s a manhole over there,” Tiernann spoke, gesturing toward the one she’d found after Braden had dived down the main one the humans had been hanging over, luring them both in as bait. “It’ll bring you down to where the humans are, follow their scent. You won’t miss it.” Taking a deep breath, she turned toward the remaining few joining them all. “You,” she said, giving them all a look that said ‘do not fuck with me’. “You all follow me. We’re going in over there.” This time she gestured toward the large sewer and all the filthy things guarding its opening.

Tiernann didn’t give any of them a chance to respond, nor to protest. She readied her M4A1 and began shooting, charging toward the vile things that were hissing and squealing around the large open sewer. Come hell or high water, she was going in there. She just hoped she’d take as many of the filthy things down with her as she could as she bulled on ahead.

Muzzle-flash flared into the dark sewers, the horrid bang sounding like an earthquake in his ears. Braden stopped in his carnage a moment and quickly scrambled low into the murky sewer water before clambering up to safety, bullets smacking into the water.

Well, talk about a close rescue. But they weren't out of the woods yet..knife in hand, Braden made his way to the vent line, hacking through the filth when they got in his way. He wasn't too surprised to see the vent bent and torn..but that didn't make his heart feel any better.

He knelt down over the vent with a blink and reached out, grabbing an ankle and yanking back with a snarl. A squealing filth turned and hissed before Braden's knife sunk into his skull, tossing the corpse in the water to slink back into the sewage drain.

He wasn't sure all this smell was going to come off at all..

Tiernann went on ahead into the hissing crowd of vile things. She was on a mission, a mission of vengeance. So help her if any of those humans… if Braden… had been harmed. Those things would pay and she’d enjoy making them do so.

Tiernann shouted out and shot at anything that moved near her. Her legs kicked at anything that got close enough yet miraculously evaded the bullets she sent flying into the mass of filthy beasts. She fought with purpose, determination. And slowly, she made it towards the large open sewer. Behind her she could hear the others engaging in their own battles, something that eased her a little. But she refused to dwell on it, her single focus – making sure that that humans and that Braden were all right.

Standing over the edge of the sewer, Tiernann leaped down into the thing. She landed on the ground with a splash. Standing up, she readied herself and began making her way through the dank, dark tunnel. She could hear the hisses and squeals of those things that called themselves vampire and she sneered. Their stench filled her nostrils, their excitement over the possibility of winning a battle. The very thought of that made her blood boil.

“Braden!” Tiernann shouted out, trying to find him, continuing to make her way through the tunnels underground.

His ears perked up a moment as he turned to the lip of the sewage drain, peeking his head out curiously. Hah! That harpy did it!

"Boyd!" He called out. "Over here! Hurry your ass, woman! There's more coming!" The sewers were practically the filth's cities, the heavy splashes of more were not unheard even in the thunderous booms of firearms.

Well, at least the humans were safe for the moment..he was blocking the only way in. It was a blessing..but he still hadn't the foggiest how they were going to get out alive.

Tiernann started to run through the tunnels as soon as she heard Braden’s voice. She couldn’t help but smile as the sound of it hit her ears. Finally, she reached his side after navigating the dank sewers by following the sound of his voice.

“How you managing?” Tiernann asked as she shot at another couple of the vile beasts that tried to attack. “Looks like you didn’t need us,” she laughed as she kicked another filthy creature in the abdomen.

Tiernann could see that they still weren’t out of the woods yet. More than were already there were coming, she could hear them perfectly. ‘Is this night ever end?’ she wondered to herself.

"Wish I had your gun, though..come on." He said, offering his hand. "I got the humans shacked up in a maintenance room down the sewage drain. I don't think they're going to last much longer without some help."

They'd have to trust the others to figure the rest out..Boyd and him could probably get the humans to some sort of safety..

Tiernann took Braden’s hand as he led the way to where he’d stashed the humans. She smiled as he ran down the tunnel, noticing how no others seemed to branch off of it. Smart thinking. He could leave them for a time and fend off what he could, clearing the way, not having to worry about more vile beasts sneaking up from behind. Those things were smarter than they’d originally given them credit for, so the idea of cutting them off, isolating the humans wasn’t a stretch at all.

The two continued down the tunnel until Braden had finally stopped. Tiernann figured they were close to where he’d hidden the humans away. Gun in hand, she glanced all about herself, trying to see if more filthy nasties were coming after them or not. She hoped that the others were keeping enough of them busy above ground that those who were down below and nearby would be diverted to go above ground and help their comrades.

Not seeing anything for the moment, Tiernann gave Braden’s hand a squeeze. “Where’d you hide them?” She paused a moment. “You think we can get them out another way? We have to get the to the Chrysler Building as fast as possible.”

"I'm handsome and smart, not intelligent." He grinned. "I hadn't thought that far, but I think I might know a way. They're going to be waiting for us to surface..but we might be able to make our way through the sewers.." He murmured, glancing up.

"We're..what..five or six blocks away from the Chrysler building? We might be able to get them to safety much quicker..but it'd be dangerous." He sighed, fingers curling around the grating to yank it off.

Thankfully, they were all there..huddled in fear. But safe for the most part, the barricade was holding..but the slam and snarls of the intruders were quite clear. He gave the humans a grin, taking the pistol and the ammo belt in gratitude.

"You should probably radio the others, Boyd..I don't think it's wise for all of them to be down here..think we can pull them up ourselves?"

Tiernann couldn’t help but smile a little at Braden’s statement. She had to agree with him on the handsome part, but the knock at his intelligence? Oh he was much smarter than he’d ever let on. She knew that full well and just shook her head as a soft chuckle passed over her lips.

“The surface is a battlefield,” Tiernann spoke. “The others are up there now.” She watched Braden remove the grating leading to where the humans had been cleverly stashed. “It’s not pretty. But yeah…” her voice trailed a moment as the hisses of the filthy, vile creatures rang in her ears. “Better up there than down here. At least up there you can run,” she laughed as she pulled out her transmitter and radioed the others about keeping clear of the sewers.

Tiernann’s eyes locked with Braden’s as he re-armed himself, the humans whispering and whimpering in fear, as she spoke softly into the device. Her pale eyes were like piercing blue lights in the darkness.

“We’re set,” Tiernann said with a nod. “Let’s do it. I think we’re up for the challenge.” She gave him a smile as she readied herself for the fight to come as they brought the humans to safety. A smile saying that she was going to enjoy every moment of that fight.

"I'm going to need a drink after this, I know that much..maybe a bottle or..five." He mused, fitting his belt around himself again; gesturing to open grating with his Beretta to give her a fanged grin.

"Ladies with big guns first, my dear. I'll cover the rear...just try not to get into too much trouble, Boyd." He said as the humans scurried behind her. Just another night's work, he supposed. But that was no big deal, more fun in a fight than just an escort job. That is of course, as long as they got the humans out. Sewers full of freaks, humans getting dragged off into the night..things just never got easier.

‘A large and very hard drink,’ Tiernann thought to herself. If they managed to get these humans back without so much as a scratch, she’d be amazed. In fact, she’d be down right astounded. Despite that, she was pretty damn proud of their efforts thus far given their disastrous odds. The vile beasts had been swarming them for hours now, yet they’d still managed to survive. So far.

“You’re too kind,” Tiernann mumbled as Braden gestured for her to move through the grate. His smile caught her off guard for some reason and she found herself returning it, wondering how that happened. Funny how he could do that to her sometimes.

Shaking it off and focusing on their task at hand, Tiernann followed the tunnel beyond the grate. She could hear the humans scuffling behind her, their frightened whispers loud to her vampiric ears. She hoped that she and Braden could get them back to the Chrysler Building. Once there, they’d be golden and it was only a few more blocks until they reached the safe haven.

Tiernann fired her M4-A1, killing anything that so much as moved, kicking anything else that missed her firing. “How’s it going back there?” she asked, glancing quickly over her shoulder. She hoped Braden was faring well. Soon, she hoped, they’d be home.

"We're alright." Braden called back, glancing behind him. Boyd was efficient, he'd give her that much. All he was seeing was limbs and floating bodies, but he could hear them like a tide of rancid sewer water. Of course, that didn't change the smell any..you'd figure living pieces of shit would have a better smell to them. But he supposed that was a musing for another time.

"We need to pick this up, Boyd." He growled, turning to raise his Beretta. "They don't like us taking their snacks...pick a ladder. We'll just have to pray we're lucky." He muttered, squeezing his trigger as one of the shadowy figures went sprawling with a pained squeal. Next time, he was bringing something bigger to patrol, leave it to a woman to make the man look small.

"Besides, I feel safer above the sewers."

Tiernann scowled. She could easily see that the filthy things were getting both angry as well as anxious. And though she wanted to just plunge on ahead, Braden was right. They needed to get to the surface and hope that the others up there actually did their job. She didn’t know if she trusted that. Not that she didn’t think the others would try, but they were so greatly outnumbered it was laughable.

Eyes searching for a ladder leading out that just might be ‘the one’ to try, Tiernann continued forging ahead, gun firing, legs and feet moving, kicking, running. Finally, she spotted a ladder that appeared promising. At least upon first glance, not that she had any more time allotted for more than glancing.

“Here’s the lucky one!” Tiernann shouted back to Braden as they herded the humans through the sewers.

With great stealth, Tiernann sprinted ahead and climbed the ladder. For peace of mind, she had to at least scope things out a little. It was better than nothing, she figured and it was worth checking since it was better to have a clue as to what was waiting for them before they just bulled on up out of the depths and above ground without a thought.

Tiernann opened the sewer grating and peeked around to gain an idea of what they’d be facing. The things were everywhere, but they were massing away from the direction in which they were headed. A definite bonus and it made her smile. “Excellent,” she whispered to herself. Taking a breath, she called down below. “Get ready to hoist them up, Braden!”

"With bells on my toes, Miss Boyd." He muttered, another salvo of gunfire echoing in the sewer below. Nevertheless, he sunk himself down for the first human to get on his shoulders, rising up carefully as he kept his Beretta trained down the sewers. They weren't giving up, and Braden was running out of ammo. That wouldn't be good, because he could hear the next wave coming..on both sides.

"Come on." He urged gently, taking another hand to help them up the ladder as fast as possible. With the other vampires long out of the sewers, all they had was the horrendous loud noise of the frantic footsteps of the humans on the metal ladder. Next time, he wasn't carrying just one gun..he was going to carry one for each arm..preferably with as much ammo as he can hold..this was ridiculous!

Tiernann stood above ground as Braden hoisted the humans up one by one. Despite their slowness, they moved rather quickly up the ladder and this made her smile. Seeing as time was short and ammo was dwindling, any little thing that could give them an edge was very much welcomed.

“Come on, this way,” Tiernann spoke as the humans began to mass about her. “Stay close. This isn’t over quite yet. Still a couple blocks to go.” She tried to stay reassuring, but she wasn’t stupid either. The humans needed to know the facts. Even the bleak ones. And at present, she honestly wasn’t sure if they’d make it back or not. She could only hope.

Tiernann’s eyes darted everywhere. Their back up was engaging with the nasties, keeping them occupied, diverting their attention elsewhere. It was almost too good to be true, which usually meant it was. But she couldn’t see any imminent dangers, so she went with it for the time being, taking advantage of the situation while she still could. Smiling, she peered down the sewer. She could see Braden hoisting the humans up to the ladder at record speed.

“Not bad,” Tiernann mumbled as she watched. She was grateful to be out working with someone like Braden. He always knew how to get shit done, even when the odds were stacked against them and she liked that. A lot of the others tended to lose their cool, to lose their focus. It made working with Braden refreshing. She gave him a smile and called down teasingly, “Haul ass there, Braden. We don’t have all night!”

Tiernann chuckled to herself as she gathered the humans about her. Yeah, she was glad Braden was her partner. If he hadn’t been, the humans would’ve been dead hours ago.

"Bitch, bitch, bitch.." Braden muttered, slapping a his last magazine into his smoking pistol, he could hear the frantic footsteps of the last human bound up the latter before he turned to do the same, holstering his pistol to double his pace up the ladder.

In three long strides, he was at the top, smelling of sewer and covered in blood and god knows what else.

"I hate my job," He grunted, climbing up. "But I don't hate showers."
