It was the day the world stood still. Everything and everyone became locked in a battle that no-one could win. The UN and Nato had overstepped their bounds and now there was no backing out for them. The league of Islamic Nations would no longer tolerate outside interference. The fear of Nuclear War was suddenly becoming realized.

Iran, Pakistan, Oman, Palestine and Libya were finished with diplomacy. There would be no further negotiation. Israel had been given their marching orders by 5 countries that had enough nuclear armament to ensure that much of the surface of the planet would be turned to glass. They turned their weapons outward towards the world, demanding that the Jews leave Israel. The UN and Nato refused to comply and Israel would not budge. Pride was the prize now in the middle east, foolhardy pride for the victor and shame and retreat for the vanquished. The final warnings were being sent over the airwaves, decrying fire from the skies and pain and suffering.

48 later: hours most of the surface of the middle east was turned to glass. 72 hours later: The sleeper cells exacted revenge with the timing and accuracy of a well-sprung clock.

James had survived that day, simply by being where he was. It was all luck. His friends had a house on the outskirts of Denver. They listened to the radio emit the sounds of a scared journalist in Yemen. He was worried about the fallout, but that was the least of his concerns when India fired it's nuclear arms at the middle east in reprisal for Pakistan bombarding New Delhi.

When the bombs went off in all the major cities in the United States and Canada, no-one knew. Everything was so well timed that the only way you knew what had happened was if you were alive. After that you had to hope that you weren't on fire. A week later most of the population of North America was gone due to explosion, fire, radiation poisoning or exhaustion.

The population was being gathered wherever possible and taken to community centers across the US. What remained of the national guard had been left in command. All the branches of the government were destroyed meaning the soldiers were the ones in charge.

James had made his way to the local community center, hoping to find a few more survivors. The looting started shortly after, at first the military tried to prevent it. Shortly thereafter they began joining in. Women were raped, men were tortured and killed for the amusement of the sickest of the soldiers and soon the societies of the world began to reshape. James didn't like the look of the world, so the only option left was to run to the hills. He needed to find a place to ride out the rest of time.
