Our story is set nearly three hundred years before Kushiel's Dart takes place. Terre d'Ange is a flourishing, if highly insular, nation. Until recently, they've dealt primarily with Aragonia and Caerdicca Unitas, occasionally fighting off Skaldi raiders. However, for the past twenty years, Terre d'Ange has had a trade embargo declared against Aragonia. It was twenty years ago that the Royal House of Aragon's treacherous plots with House Shahrizai were discovered...

Duc Gabriel Shahrizai, who held sovereignty of Kusheth, had married his eldest daughter Denise to the Prince of Aragonia some ten years earlier, creating a very profitable alliance for Terre d'Ange. The Duc and his daughter conspired against the throne, planning to falsify a planned invasion, where Aragonia would harry D'Angeline forces at the Lusande and Aviline Rivers, to keep them busy while Aragonia invaded Euskerria. Gabriel and Denise planned to 'expose' these plans to the King, claiming that Aragonia would not listen to a mere woman, but Denise could not watch them move against her homeland. Gabriel was (probably correctly) certain that King Vincent would reward his loyalty by betrothing Gabriel's oldest son, Dariel, to the unwed Dauphine.

These plans were interrupted by the sudden premature death of King Vincent. He was thought to be in the prime of his life, only in his fifties, and he was a much beloved ruler. As nobles gathered in the City of Elua for his funeral, somehow Duc Ranier de Morhban discovered the Shahrizai plot and exposed them to Queen Liane almost immediately after her coronation. They were tried at the first meeting of Parliament. The Duc was killed, and Dariel was banished when he refused to swear fealty to the Queen after his father's death. The Duc's youngest daughter, Simone, was made Duchese, but sovereignty was given to the Duc de Morhban.

Denise Shahrizai y Aragon was also sentenced to death, although of course Aragonia would neither comply nor extradite her. The Prince truly loved her and was not about to kill his wife. Queen Liane declared a trade embargo against Aragonia that would remain in effect until her death, effectively putting a bounty on Denise's head.

Afterwards, Queen Liane decided to look into potential trade routes elsewhere, so that they were not wholly dependent on Caerdicca Unitas for goods from the rest of the world. Liane sent a delegation to Menekhet, which ended up being a fruitful mission that also opened up a more direct route to Eastern goods. Terre d'Ange has prospered much since the failed Shahrizai plot, making relations with Aragon even more tense. All of House Shahrizai has sworn fealty to the Queen, but even now there are tensions in Kusheth between them and House Morhban.

Queen Liane surprised everyone by marrying Eduard de Mereliot, son of the Lady of Marsilikos. It was Eduard who led the Menekhetan delegation, and most of the realm expected him to be named Lord Admiral upon his return. Instead, he became King. Liane and Eduard have four children, two girls and twin boys. For twenty years now life has been peaceful in the city of Elua... Of course, the Skaldi still raid along the Cammaeline and Azzalese borders in the spring, and Soivale and Kusheth still hold uneasy borders with Aragonia. As the nation has begun looking outward beyond their borders, a growing number of half-bred lesser nobles has caused a stir in many of the more pure Noble houses and by proxy within the chambers of parliment as well.

I'm hoping to find 3-4 interrested people. Multiple characters are always an option, though I would say no more than 2 or 3... not counting 'extras' of course. I'm sure there will end up being plenty of them.
