Raiders in the Dark(Chiffon&Caspian)

Caroline’s heart raced the moment her phone went off. She had been certain tonight was going to be the longest night of her life. So when her phone hummed with the tell tale buzz of an incoming text she nearly jumped out of her skin with happiness.

“Of course, for you-always.”

She smiled as she propped herself into the bed curling around her phone as she cradled it waiting for his response. The soft light of the screen giving off an eerie glow in the darkened room.

Jared sighed contentedly and dialed the number. When the phone rang he held his breath until the sweet, melodic voice of Caroline carried over through his earpiece.

"Mmmmmmmm," Jared sighed into the phone. "I've been wanting to hear your voice all night. It's weird being alone... being without you. You've become such a comfort and now that you're not here things don't feel right Caroline." He whispered into phone: "And with you way over there, I can't kiss you."

Caroline sighed softly her whole being relaxing as Jared talked.

“I miss you too,” she said softly. “Tomorrow I am skipping school and just spending the day in my own bed.” She let the sentence hang between them. Just hearing his voice had soothed her, but she felt the emptiness of missing his person.

“Why is it you make me feel so complete Jared? When did this happen that I can’t breathe properly without hearing your voice or being close to you?” Caroline shook her head a silent tear running down her cheek. She was so head over heels for him. It wasn’t fair.

Jared cooed back over the phone: "I am unsure, and I don't know how I could be so lucky Caroline, but here I am and here we are and I am so glad to be a part of us."

Jared sighed over the phone "tomorrow I will be able to hold you when I get off my shift on dorm duty. Perhaps we can finally finish that last episode of Sherlock?"

“Perhaps,” Caroline replied softly a smile on her lips. She yawned.

“I should go though, tomorrow is going to come fast and I feel like I’ve been trampled by a herd of elephants.” She said her goodbyes softly whispering them into her phone. As her eyes closed against her last night away from her own bed, her dreams were filled with images past and present of Jared and how different choices could have led them together sooner.

Jared could feel sleep coming on before he even dialed, so when Caroline's sweet voice disappeared he fell into a soft dream of he and Caroline watching a movie, cuddling. In the dream he could smell the scent of her hair and could feel the soft skin of the back of her neck against his lips. He slept soundly, waking up the next morning with the sun. His alarm clock turned over to 6:45AM and it was time to get up.

He went down the hall to the showers. He brushed his teeth, showered and got ready for his day. He dressed comfortable in a pair of Khaki pants, a threadless t-shirt with the sun eating a cloud and his vans deck shoes. He threw on a jacket and hopped out the door and walked down the street to the hospital. He was excited to see Caroline healthy again. It was hard to believe she had been in there for only 3 days, it felt like a month.

Caroline was up early. She showered and dressed, tossing the small number of things her folks had brought her into her bag. As she sat brushing her hair, her pulse fluttered. It nearly felt like she was nervous about seeing Jared. She fidgeted looking at the clock. He never really ran quite on time, but as the minutes ticked closer to 9am she hopped he would appear. The knock on her door though came from the Doctor as he stepped into her room.

“Just normal check out procedure.” He began, rambling about the things she would need to remember and thrusting a prescription into her hands. “Get this filled immediately and makes ure you keep one with you at all times. You are going to be fairly sensitive for the next little while.” He signed her release papers and turned to leave.

3 minutes after 9, Caroline sighed. Hopefully Jared would be here soon, she couldn’t wait to get out of here!

Jared walked into the hospital and made his way up to the room where Caroline was getting ready. He caught her as she bent over to pick something up off the floor and gently caressed the curve of her backside. When she stood up he gave her a kiss on the cheek.

"I've been waiting for this for a couple days now, my dear." He offered her the crook of his arm. "Perhaps you would do me the honour of escorting me out of the hospital and over to the nearest fine coffee establishment? Perhaps a pair of peppermint hot chocolates are the order of the day?" Jared grinned.

Caroline spun into Jared’s arms as she lifted her lips for a kiss.

“That sounds wonderful, though I may need something with more caffeine in it.” She smiled as she picked up her bag and looped her arm in his.

“But please lead me away my Prince,” she was glowing as she looked at him. She couldn’t wait to be in her own room, her own bed, and with Jared by her side. She smiled at him as they stepped out into the cool air. Caroline paused for a moment, her battered lungs taking time to adjust to the cooler air.

“Remind me that I don’t ever want to be back here anytime soon,” she said softly as they made their way to the coffee shop across the street before going home.

They got into the coffee shop, the aroma was rich and exotic. Jared, as a child, did not like the scent of coffee shops. They were always too perfumy and pungent. Now that he was an adult and consumed coffee, he could not get enough. He also knew that from now on the smell of this coffee shop was forever going to remind him of Caroline. He smiled, knowing he got a hidden souvenir by coming here.

"Well, something caffeinated it shall be! What is my lady's pleasure?" He grinned.

They got to the counter and Jared ordered a peppermint mocha and a ginger molasses cookie. "And for the lady, please give her whatever it is she desires." He said with a grin.

"Just a medium blend coffee please," Caroline said softly the scent of the coffee already relaxing her lungs. She was glad she'd been so far ahead in her classes because today and tomorrow she was not moving out of her dorm room. When the lady anded her the cup Caroline turned to the little counter and poured in her sugar and cream as Jared waited for his. She sipped the brew before putting on the lid, making sure it was perfect.

"Well, my Prince, now...shall we go home?" She said winking at him as they left the shop to go stand outside at the bus stop. She took another sip of coffee, feeling it loosen her lungs futher.

Jared nodded and smiled. "Indeed my dear. Perhaps I can interest you in 7 hours of movies on netflix until I must make my rounds. Naturally, having learned that one of the dorm residents is ill, I will also be ensuring regularly that you are alright." Jared grinned. "Perhaps, since I lack the facilities for making chicken soup - not to mention the ingredients, I will come in and just attempt to kiss everything better. Over..." He kissed her lips ."...and over..." He kissed her cheek. "...and over again." He kissed her brown and then helped her onto the bus.

He held her against his chest as they bounced down the road in the large blue bus. It felt wonderful to hold her again, the sensation of feeling complete washed over his entire being. Things felt right again.

She closed her eyes as she lay her head on Jared’s shoulder.
“7 hours of Net Flix actually sounds pretty amazing. As long as it involves my bed and you, I think I will be in heaven.” Caroline smiled as they drew closer to their stop. She was glad Jared helped her up when they got to their stop, her legs were still a little wobbly given the last 72 hours. But as he led her to her room she relaxed.

The smell of her own space was delightful.

She watched Jared enclose them into her room, and slowly she began taking off her clothes. Not caring if he was watching her, Caroline stripped out of her clothes and into her comfiest pj’s. A Lavender top with matching lavender and black plaid bottoms. She pulled open the quilt from her sheets and scooted under it. Taking another sip of her luke-warm coffee she smiled at Jared.

“Joining me?”

Jared could think of nothing he wanted more than to join Caroline in the bed. He contemplated running to his room to grab his PJ's, but opted instead to just get out of his jeans and slide into her bed with his boxer shorts on. He pulled open his laptop and opened netflix. He selected the final episode of "Sherlock" and wrapped his arm around Caroline. He kissed the back of her neck and inhaled her scent.

"I've missed touching you and I've missed your smell, Caroline. You always smell so good." He whispered into her ear.

Caroline woke in the warm embrace of Jared.

She blinked a couple of times, the room slowly coming into focus. She rubbed her eyes. She leaned over and gently kissed Jared’s cheek as he slept beside her.

She smiled as the rising sun caught a bit of the silver in his hair he denied every chance he got. She gently ran her fingertips through it as she snuggled into his backside. Twelve years today, they had been married, and it still felt like yesterday they had fallen asleep in her dorm room after coming home from the hospital, that night he promised to never let her go. She leaned down and gently kissed his ear whispering into it softly.

“Happy Anniversary my PrinceCharming.”
