"In an age long past... evil flooded over the land. Creatures awash in the dark tide ran wild, pushing mankind to the brink of annihilation. In its despair, mankind appealed to the heavens, and from a blinding light came hope. The Valkyries. These five glorious heralds held the power to dispel evil. The hero Weiss and his warriors joined them to combat evil's darkness. Together they defeated the Demon King and sealed his soul away. With the darkness imprisoned, peace returned to Magvel. But this peace would not last... Weiss had given his life in order to defeat the evil and without his leadership a power vacuum has appeared. Kingdoms have been raised, bandits raid with impunity, and many horrible creatures have outlived their maker. The Valkyries are gone, and their temples are silent. The land is twisted and broken. The earth itself cries out for blood as it gives birth to new horrors. The last bastions of humanity are held up within their cities. Food is running out. Villages are abandoned by their governing powers. To save themselves the nobility cuts ties to outlying settlements and leaves them to their fate. The world is dying. it cannot last much longer, and there is no way to save it. This is how the world ends."

the Prie'er Empire
They once possessed the largest army on the continent. With the other major powers crippled and Prie'er relatively untouched, Queen Elisif has ordered the Prie'er knights to go and exterminate monsters that threaten the continents citizens. This was not a popular move, and with king Raigar dead Prie'er is in a tense political struggle.
the Theocracy of Rausten
A religious city and the first to go to war when the Demon King emerged. It's powerful military had met the Demon King's army at the battle of shattered oaks and been decimated, leaving the city open to the invasion. The demon king occupied it easily and remained there until Elisif's husband Raigar, and the hero Weiss had sealed him in the Sacred Stones. With the city overrun the remaining citizens flooded out of the country into their neighbor Carcino.
Carcino Republic
Carcino is a republic of merchants and artisans led by a number of merchant houses. Each of these houses hold a few seats on the senate, but they are led by House Dace. Their military is weak and underdeveloped, used primarily for ceremony. They had relied on their neighbor Rausten for protection and devoted themselves completely to commerce. Now the influx of refugees and the numerous losing battles with bands of monsters have the city on the edge of collapse.
