Father committed suicide before Thomas was old enough to get to know him. Mother remarried to a stepfather that was in no way cruel or abusive, but he and Thomas never formed a close bond. Thomas studied journalism at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia, then was offered a job on the Vancouver Chronicle first as a reporter, later as a field correspondent. His first assignment was a massive shock to him, watching the brutalisation of war, massacres, soldiers cracking up with PTSD and other horrors. This had the effect of destroying any faith he might have either in a god of any kind or even essential human goodness.
Recent events: Has just returned from latest assignment, resigned his job. Is debating whether to go freelance, or try another field altogether. Will not go home to his parents.
